I reckon Nomad should just ditch vBulletin altogether, which is a paid service, and use Simple Machines Forum instead, which is free and teeming with features, including countless up-to-date anti-spam features. I used to run a forum and I had SMF software on it, and it was much easier to use and update/upgrade than any other forum software I tried. There are user-created "packages", in much the same way as you get add-ons/extensions for Firefox, and the feature set is pretty overwhelming. One feature in particular which would solve a lot of our problems is the ability to prune posts, and to delete all posts made by a specific user. I think vBulletin could do this after an update, but if you're gonna risk updating the software you may as well take that opportunity to switch to SMF, which in my opinion is better.

Obviously my forum was much smaller and less active than this one, so my opinion of and experiences with SMF may not be applicable to MetalTabs. You could try loading up a temporary SMF forum in parallel with this forum and let the mods and users test it out before deciding to transfer the data across.

If Nomad doesn't mind paying for vBulletin I think an update to the software alone would help.

It only seems like there are a few mods (cheers to you guys) who even come around on a day to day basis to ban the spamming n00bs. Sure the tabs are most important, but a better maintained forum (like it used to be, for example) would bring more traffic to the whole site. I blame PST.

He is aware of it. In the mod forum we have a thread running to about 4 pages on how to deal with spam. Nomad recently introduced a new sign up feature that beat the bots at first but they seem to have bypassed that now.

I don't think we're ever going to keep the fuckers out to be honest, so we just need better forum tools with which to delete spam threads/posts. Obviously, this is going to take time because Nomad has his own life to live.

What I don't get about spam is that to maximise the return from an advertising budget (spam is merely a crude form of advertising afterall) you need the maximum possible exposure to your advert. By spamming a forum to death, the spammers will only succeed in driving the forum membership down, therefore limiting the advert's exposure. Idiots.
