Languages
Does anyone here speak multiple languages and/or are learning a new one. I'm going to try to learn Dutch. But it is rather hard because I will have to do it in my own free time. And Rosetta Stone is far to expensive. So any suggestions on how I should learn it. I'm not for speaking as much as I'am for learning its syntax and learning the vocabulary.

I speak french, english and few words in Dutch.
I suggest you to buy a book and go on internet for the pronounciation (if you wanna learn it by your own) That is what i did and it's quite possible.

I speak English and Danish. The best way to learn a language is to fully immerse yourself, surround yourself by Dutch speakers. This is a lot to ask, but in my opinion is the only way of becoming fluent in a language. Go to Holland or Belgium for a year, experience the culture, see something totally different, and try to speak as little english as possible. You'd learn a lot. Although Dutch speakers might tell you, you might not learn it in a year  Very tough language I am told. |

anyway everyone here knows me as the language slut. im so fascinated by language that im transferring to suny albany in the fall as a linguistics major. not the most useful major, but language is the only thing besides music i can get excited about.
ive taught myself some danish, i took four years of latin, i took my first year of german this year, and thats it for any language i have a shot at communicating in. i love picking up random words in languages though.
im also fascinated by accents. i can totally see myself archiving accents of english speakers, or doing something like that in the future

regarding accents, i saw an awesome website a few years ago but i doubt ill ever find it again. it was this long paragraph, basically nonsensical, that was read by people whose second language was english. then it would have analysis of how they read it

Dutch (doh), german and english fluently, un petit peu french, and small bits of Scandinavian languages, Frisian too. I understand most of the dialects of germanic language groups on seeing them. And some Limburgian (the dialect of the region I live in)

At this point I really can't speak any other languages anymore, though I can still understand every Romance language pretty well. I still retain some bits of German, Hungarian, and Czech, but I never learned them properly, so even when I could speak them somewhat I wouldn't say I could speak them.

English, German, a little Spanish (but i've forgotten most of it), and i'm learning Polish (and re-learning a lot of my German, but it's coming back quickly  ) Once i'm done with Polish, hopefully it'll be easier to pick up other eastern European languages, and Russian would be cool too

i would recommend you learn spanish...unless of course you are intending on working in a particular country. otherwise, spanish would probably be the language you will come across most often.

i can read spanish, but people speak it too fast, for me. if i were to learn another language, it would probably be finnish, so that if i ever do visit the land of metal , i will have an easy time getting around and what not. |

Well, I speak Norwegian and English, and Im trying to learn Spanish. I can obviously understand Swedish and Danish. Lots of German as well, but there's no way I can actually speak that myself anymore.

a bit of elaboration
danish and norwegian are VERY similar, swedish uses a different alphabet but is understandable to someone who speaks any of those three
finnish is completely unreleated. finland is a part of scandinavia (denmark norway sweden finland iceland faroe islands) however the language is not germanic like D,N, and S. finnish is a finno-ugric language, its relatives being hungarian and estonian. not only is it a different alphabet, the sentence structure is vastly different because it is agglutinative, meaning is affixed to nouns with suffixes.
a basic example
english:i dont understand
danish: jeg forstår ikke
norwegian: jeg forstår ikke
swedish: jag forstär inte

I am only fluent in English. My French has got progressively worse since I left school but I can still read a fair bit of it. I can also count in Thai and know about 8 words.

Transient and GD are right. Finnish is pretty much completely incomprehensible to me, with the exception of a few words. Hell, German is much more similar to Norwegian than Finnish.

Finnish is most similar to Estonian and has old bands to Hungarian, the Finugrian (I guess you write it like that) language group.

Today....we did more negations of sentences regarding shopping auf Deutsch. Me thinks we're slowing down until exam 2 next wednesday....anyhoo, it's Monday thru thursday so I get a 3 day weekend to study vocabulary! yayyyyy 
I should be all right though....I've got two friends that speak german to help me out.

I got Rosetta Stone finally and I've begin to learn Dutch. But the way that Rosetta Stone teachs I'll only be able to read it and be able to understand it in speech but I won't be able to speak it. Other than that it is going quite well. |

Italian (mother language) and English fluently (even if a bit rusted now). I understand also a bit of written Spanish. I started studying a bit of Norwegian last year (first time by comparing Norwegian lyrics and their English translation - I'm crazy), but for several months I stopped due to lack of time. During holidays I'm going to start again, and to start also Swedish. I'd like also to learn Finnish, but I fear that learning three new languages together is too much. I've already serched for some dictionaries and grammar rules but, apart from the first rudiments, lot of material is in language so... I'll start learning by translating them!

I'd say trying to learn Swedish and Norwegian at the same time would be very, very confusing especially if you're pretty new to both. I would think you would be better off trying to get at least a decent understanding of one of them before trying to learn the other. |

dutch is my mother language, i speak some german, pretty well english, and i can say, ''fuckyou'', ''go into an asshole'', ''you are an asshole'', and ''fuck you demonic whore'' in icelandic (or sumtim close anyway), so what more do i need  .
i wanna learn some proper icelandic sumtimes, i got a good friend who lives there, and the chicks are hot!!!

if you want to learn two languages at the same time, i suggest that you try with finnish and norweigan/swedish.. because finnish are very different so if you take two languages which arent very close (like swedish and norweigan)it wouldnt be too caotic! because i speak both swedish and finnish i suggest those languages but thats just my opinion

This is very true. I allready knew how to speak German but I only got 'good' at it from beeing around Germans for a while!
Dutch is a very tough language to learn but Germans usually have less problems with it then people from other countries. This is because a lot of words and the way we build sentences are alike. (IE the germanic language)
I speak Dutch, Flemish, German and English. Most of them fluently, ask PST88.
I know a fair bit of French and Spanish as well. I can speak/write/read both of them. Though I must say I am far from fluent in these languages.
Pineappleystuff, you don't need to speak Dutch to live in Amsterdam, 90% of the people there speak English. But we instantly know who are the tourists and who are not. |
