Computer Discussion

I've been thinking about making this thread for a while. So hear is the synopsis. Post computer/ computer related news, favorite software, hardware, your computer information (like your processor, desktop, os), etc.

Enjoy!

Here is my computer imformation;

Dell Inspiron E1405
OS: Windows XP Professional
Processor(s): Intel Genuine CPU T2050 @1.60 GHz (2CPUs)
RAM: 1gig
Graphic card: Intel GMA 950 224mb

N33333333333333rd. Nah I'm a huge nerd too. I have had this computer for about 4 or 5 years, the specs are:

Pentium 4 2.53Ghz
RAM: 512mb
Windows XP Home.
Graphics: ATI Radeon 9000(64mb)
Onboard soundcard + some old Aureal soundcard with midi ports + Presonus Inspire sound interface/mic-instrument preamp n' software.

Since I'm not playing latest generation video games nor pretending to be an architect I'm good with what I have, works splendidly for everything I do: surfing, music, recording/mixing, porn, playing HL/CS and Q3 recently.

That is extremely good RAM. Do you think there is a way that I could send my laptop in and get them to upgrade the processor?

Does the web browser you use have widgets?

Thats not too shabby of a setup.

And Requiem mac doesn't have "widgets" like you think of them. You actually hit the F12 key and they all pop up, so there is no need to have them in a browser.

And i doubt you can get a processor replaced, maybe a harddrive. Infact i would definitely like to konw if i can buy an oem harddrive and put it in this bitch. I'm already sick and tired of 80 gigs. I'm running barely enough space for my windows partition.

Nice. i wish i had the 120gb hd, but i definitely wasn't going to pay more for my laptop for it.

The only thing that rocks about this laptop is its size/shape. I'm sure i could have gotten a more powerful laptop for less of the price, but by no means would it be this thin, weight this less, and have a nice screen.

walpurgis' HP laptop disk drive took a powder so a shop looked at it and said they could replace it and upgrade to Windows Vista for a bit over $200. He looked on a parts supply place online to see how much the part was and for $100, that included postage and a year warranty, he replaced it himself. He used my Windows XP. He had to download some drivers, but he's back to playing WoW now.

Don't forget this is an apple.. and after looking it up on the apple website they definitely don't have any instructions on it... so... who knows.

seems to me requiem reads a book on basic c++ programming and suddenly has a boner for computers that rivals mine for languages...

i have an inspiron that my friend basically put together for me online, and i paid for it. it kicks infinite amounts of ass

You're correct transient, but I've decided to learn c# instead of c++ for various reasons.

But the widgets on Mac OS sound awesome. I would love to experience the pwnzorzness or an Apple computer.

how many times do i ave to tell you they aren't any "better" than any other computer out there. Especially windows. Its just another platform to go on.

Except... you have compatibility issues like you can't imagine, and oh wait you'll have everyone and their mothering saying "but its now universal binary!!" well guess what that means. Not only do they still have shit amount of software compatible with mac now you can't use the OLD stuff to begin with, or it runs slow as fuck.

Mac is decient but its definitely been carried completely by hype and probably mostly due to the ipod. sadly

I am going to study game development next year - they teach C++.

Anyway, I have a new computer for almost a year now:

Dell XPS
2 GB ram
Gforce I don't know what number, 7900 or so, 256 mb
Dual processor
Etc.

Will be obliged to buy a XPS laptop for next year's studies.

PC: HP a1642x

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 (C) DC 1.86 GHz, 1066 MHz front side bus, Socket 775

Chipset: Intel G965

Motherboard: Asus P5BW-LA

RAM: 1 Gig, PC2-4200 DDR2 SDRAM (allowed up to 12 Gig)

Hard drive: 250 GB SATA (3.0 Gb/sec) 7200 rpm

Blah blah

It does a lot. I have other PCs in my home networked together but this baby is my favorite. It will be my studio PC once I buy a new home and settle in.

BTW, fuck Vista I'm going to stay with XP for at least another year until vista might be worth a damn. Nothing worked with vista for me. If it isn't broke than why out date XP?

You fix it to make it run faster and allow for better potential for programs. Having an operating system that allows more intense programs would probably be the answer. It just came out give it some time! Although i must say me was a major flop. But then again it was 98 with a bunch of fucking "media" enhanced bullshit.

haha. I have a decent set-up(celeron 2.5g), not really game worthy..I bought this computer used from my ex-gf for $300..has pirated everything.

I was going to build a super computer but I'm definitely not committed for the constant upgrades. Fuck that.

haha its not that i care for them...but seth is a funny guy. and that song just popped into my head reading all this computer shit. i didn't realize mark was such an anal cunt fan...i always likened him more towards opeth/dysrythmia shit... not really grind or death metal type stuff... haha after all, he got there because of me mostly. not to sound pompous or whatnot...but he basically went through what i did musically then kind of branched out into weirdness haha.

Well he is really big into those bands.

But hes all about hardcore dissonance. He was big into like extreme black metal, death metal, and anything else that was generally off the wall hard music.

That is hilarious.

Has any one heard about Ubuntu Linux going into the mobile OS buisness?
It sounds promising but I'm not into mobile devices.

Yeah, I read that too. But it is very unlikely now because of the problems with Novell.

My disc drive will not load discs!

I put a CD in and nothing happens!

Any help will be appreciated.

try unplugging it and plugging it back in..maybe even blow into it when the tray is open (like good old nes)...of course you could always buy a new one...cd drives are cheap as hell...even dvd drives are pretty inexpensive these days.

You may want to download new drivers. Just google the brand of disc drive that you have and install the latest drivers.

well i'm already back..but the book i asked him to get my for my bday hasn't come in yet, so i'll be talking to him soon and i'll be sure to call him a cunt for you. he's just been going to school and now has a girlfriend so i'm sure he's whipped and that probably takes up a bit of his time.

on topic....i'm thinking about buying a back up drive..or else just burning a bunch of dvds..out of a little over 300gb of space, i have just under 10 gb free.

How do you use so much space? A 70gib harddrive is more than enough for all of my software and music.

a bunch of games, movies/car videos/tv shows, pdfs, a shitload of music, tons of high res photos from my camera, some porn, and other software that takes up a bunch of space like photoshop(a couple versions)/illustrator/in design/etc.

probably start backing up a lot of music since i don't want to delete any of it, but have a lot of stuff i rarely listen to, also probably go through my pictures and delete ones i really don't need but saved at the time..then burn the rest of them.

I've been doing research on Mac for a while and I may upgrade to a Mac this October when the newest OS comes out. There are so many features on it that makes me want to switch. Here comes TMfreak telling me not to get one. :P Plus I'm going to be attending college next summer.

i don't know about the new features at all..but i can tell you that having a mac isn't necessary for going to college. i went through just fine (even as a graphic design major) without having a mac..even though we used macs all the time in my classes. you'll do fine with either, but i'm sure you'll find your school has mostly pcs, so you could run into some compatibilty issues.

That is what I "was" worried about but I will also have my Dell Inspirion laptop with me. So that sorts the compatabilitie problem out. Plus the Mac's GUI is beautiful.

I'm not going to tell you NOT to get one... just know they have alot of hype to them. Don't forget i own and use one every single day haha.

They're decient, but not super invulnerable computers like people think. The features are either too dumbed down or too abstract and not known to be practical.

Why the hell are you worried about beauty in a computer?

I'll never understand this new generation coming up. I don't want fucking amazing guis... I want functionality and simplicity.

Well compatability blows with a mac. I think this is something that has always been the case and will continue to be the case.

Intel macs can't play pre-universal binary programs. Non-intel macs can't play universal binary programs. Neither can play PC programs. (naturally).

And the programs that do run in universal binary (as of now) like to close alot for no reason. I like that funny video on Macs that is the opposite to the Anti-Windows BS campaign that mac is pulling.

honestly, if it weren't for the fact that i can't play pc games on a mac or pc with linux..i'd try either but more likely linux/unix or some version of it. everything else they have covered pretty much. so for now...pc w/windows > all else.

A good friend of mine own a Mac. We get to needing to do stuff and it's like... oh I hope someone makes a compiled version of this software for Mac and if it's anything not just extremely popular, you can bet there's no Mac version.

Exactly. One fucking program. Fruity loops. Its not available for mac, and this is a serious problem for me. To make music i have to switch computers or boot into windows.

any1 stuck on winamp should check this software out:
cowon jetaudio media center
i don't know yet how resource intensive this is, but it plays, ripps, copies and converts and has an awesome online lyric viewer that works like a charm.

Alright guys, I'm really really bad with computers. I need to clear up some space on my harddrive. How do I completely erase files?

Also, what are the best free programs to sweep my computer, look for viruses and delete them?

Go to www.majorgeeks.com and look at the top downloaded applications. Most of the top ones are exacly what you need. Now to remove apps. go to start > settings > control panel (classic view if on winxp) add or remove hardware > choose what you want gone. Now start > run > c:\program files and erase the folders that you dont need (or just the ones of the programs that you removed)

Saying your bad with computers then making those statements is a redundant thing to do. haha All jokes aside..

Well what do you want to get rid of programs? Go to start, like settings or whatever control panel. And go to add remove applications .And chose which programs you no longer want.

If its just media or things like that just right click on start and go to explore. Go through the files that you don't want and hold shift and hit delete. Hit yes and they will be removed.

As far as viruses go... you'll need something like norton anti-virus or macafee. You would know if you had a virus on your computer or not. (more than likely) so if anything you will probably need to get rid of spyware/adware. Download a program called adaware and run that. It works pertty well.

And Linux hits the mainstream.

This is a very big deal for Linux users. Now a lot more drivers and hardware will be made to work with Linux and compability problems will be fixed shortly.

Hmmm. On my laptop I just turn it off. Then when I'm turning it I press F8 and adjust power settings but that is because I have a battery running it, obvisouly. Are you on a desktop and if so what brand?

More nerd questions:

I've been downloading a lot using megauploads. Everytime, I get a ziped .rar file. I was wondering, should I delete this zipped .rars after I'm done extracting them? Will it free up more room on my hard drive? Thanks.

It depends, sometime when you delete de zip file, there was an important folder in that file, if you delete it, the file wont work and you will be obligated to re-download the file. It happenned to me once.

It's not always like that but make sure that you can do this, if you can, go on

Just bought a new computer ... AMD X2 dual-core 2.6 ghz, 2 gigs RAM, a new motherboard and a few other necessary componets. I'm going to salvage the rest of what I need from my current computer. Besides the fact that its about 3x as good as what I had, the case is badass. Should arrive Friday.

Just reading back ... have you tried defragmenting your hard drive? It does free up some space.

Did you run CCleaner? Also download Windows Advance Care and IObit Smart Defrag. I run those about once every two weeks and it keeps my computer at top shape.

Just the onboard one ... All I remember about it is that I can connect two monitors and use them in duality. I'm fed up with one monitor.

Later on if I want to play F.E.A.R. or something like that I can drop a few more $ for a decent video card.

I don't think that it is a software problem. You may need to download new drivers. Though if it is a software problem you can download a 15 day trial of Cheetah Burner from www.download.com

I don't know how to fix that. You should go to www.pcworld.com and ask for help on there. Or you could download Daemon Tools and mount the cd image.

Put down the blunt and think.... wtf did I do to deserve this?

Trying running your computer management (start << administrative tools << computer management) Look under removable media, then library, and see if what shows up for devices, then right click on em, goto proprieties, and look under device information. See if the devices are still being recognized and what drive letter they are being assigned. Then resume weed smoking and pass nigga!

^ USB MS, SD, SM, and CF Reader USB devices are the only libraries I found and nothing is in them. Nothing is in the media either.

Can you help me from there?

Also, how do I find out what kinda drivers I have?

Start << Accessories << System Tools << System Information

Then expand the Components tab, and click CD-ROM. You should see a Driver at the bottom of each section for each device (if it's showing any).

I would say get a 512 MB graphic card but I don't know if your computer could handle it. Get an Nvidia graphic card. Make sure it is 256 MB. They should be at Wal-Mart.
