well shit, i did better this round then last, i got one this time.
i really like these contests, although i feel from time to time there is some bias, i tend to lean towards viking/prog/melodeath type stuff, there are a few guys here that do almost arena rock kinda stuff, then the tech/br00tal death guys, and they seem to be the majority. im not trying to complain, its actually a bit of motivation to write better, as i have to win over people who dont particularly dig the genres i tend to write in.

I didn't think I'd get any because of the theme and the simplicity of the music. I recently (more or less) put the guitar solos in it because someone commented on how the riffs were repeating too much and it sort of dragged down. Granted, all he heard was the midi, but even so.
I do agree about the bias, how most people will judge on what they like rather than evaluating the song on a set criteria. I know I did. I just picked the one I liked the best. That's democracy for ya, though.

Of course there will be bias. The only way to prevent this is to do genre specific contests, which we tried and it flopped. I don't usually expect to do well, because the only part of my songs that are really metal are the drums. On the other hand, my contributions do add something a bit different to the usual, and I think that's why I usually get a few votes. You should try to develop you own style, it does work in your favour.
I voted for Infinity because I really like the section starting at 1:06 - it's different and interesting, and exactly the sort of thing I like.
The old man's song started well, but it went a bit cheesy for my tastes. |
