Band Vows to Defy Assisted Suicide Law - Sep. 29, 2003

Mitch Stacy of The Associated Press reports that the leader of the rock group HELL ON EARTH said an onstage suicide will happen during a private St. Petersburg concert this weekend in defiance of a new city law designed to stop it.

"The show will go on," Billy Tourtelot said Monday. "It will be available on the Internet, and it will be in the city limits [of St. Petersburg]."

Earlier Monday, the St. Petersburg City Council unanimously approved an emergency ordinance that makes it illegal in the city to conduct a suicide for commercial or entertainment purposes, and to host, promote and sell tickets for such an event.

"While I still think it's a publicity stunt, we still couldn't sit idly by and let somebody lose their life," council member Bill Foster said.

Al Galbraith, an assistant city attorney, said the city will also seek a court injunction against the band to keep them from advertising and allowing the suicide to occur.

Tourtelot, 33, says the suicide show will be played before a "a select few people" at an undisclosed location in St. Petersburg and be shown live on the band's web site, www.hellonearth.net. He wouldn't disclose any details about the terminally ill person or say how the person planned to kill himself.

The point, he said, is to raise awareness that physician-assisted suicide should be legalized in Florida. If the terminally ill person could find a physician to assist, then the person wouldn't be forced to do it himself, Tourtelot said.

"If you can die for your country, why can't you die for yourself?" he said.

Tourtelot said he's not worried about the legal ramifications. Violating the city ordinance is punishable with up to 60 days in jail and a $500 fine. A Florida law already makes it manslaughter, a second-degree felony, to assist in a suicide, but he insists the band is not assisting the act.

"This person will be doing this self-deliverance totally by themselves, on their own accord," he said.

I wonder if it's dawned on any of the band members that since it is i llegal , that they would all be accesssories to it. Hmm, maybe they're really trying to get jailed to make Bubba some new 'girl friends'. And I would be willing to bet their careers at much of anything would be down the tubes. I'm not saying assisted suicides are wrong totally, but sometimes the reasoning is very wrong. My great aunt and uncle were very much debilitated and took their lives by asphixiation. But my cousin couldn't quite figure out how they got to the garage, started the car and did what they did in as bad of shape as they were. But they were together for 50 or 60 years and they died together.

Me. I want to watch someone die to a soundtrack. Be something to tell my grandkids about. I don't know the band, but like someone else said, I have a sneaking suspicion they might just be shit.

Assissted suicide is a strange area of legality and I like to see it getting publicity. I find it absolutely astonishing that you have absolutely no rights if you want to kill yourself calmly.

The band have a number of legal avenues to protect themselves. They'll be fine.

If the guy did, I don't mind. I never heard their music even though I have heard of them. I like the idea of getting a rise out of people, like it did out most of you guys. If someone wants to end their life, go ahead. Some may shiver at the fact that he did or may do in public, I think of it dying doing what he loved to do. And if Hell on Earth sucks, and If he is dead, its just one less crappy band.

Its sad, realy, when you think about it. Its all shock value, the only way a mediocre band like Hell on Earth would make name through capricide or putting live rodents in the blender, and now a live suicide.
A decade or so ago you could still shock people by wearing black nailpolish and all black clothes, and people where suposed to be affraid of you.
