thinking about becoming a luthier
i dunno, what do u think about building guitars for a living. sounds fun to me. i would have to spend 6 mounths in training but then i could work for a factory i guess. the carvin factory is about an hour away from my house, that would be pretty convinient.

MY FRIEND GO TO COLLEGE TO DO THIS BUT HE BUILD VIOLINS
HE TALKS ABOUT IT AND IT SEEMS VERY COOL. I THINK IT MUST BE
HARD TO FIND A JOB LIKE THIS. BUT WHAT THE HELL.. IF YOU THINK
YOU CAN FIND SOMETHING AT THE FACTORY YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT
THEN GO FOR IT... 6 MONTH ISN'T THAT LONG TO LEARN A PROFESSION.
I TOOK A CAD COURSE FOR TWO YEARS. NOW I'M WORKING WITH ENGINEER
SINCE 4 YEARS AND IT START GETTING ON MY NERVES A LITTLE BIT.
THE CONDITIONS ARE GREAT, PEOPLES I WORK WITH ARE GREAT TOO,
THE SALARY IS GOOD BUT IT'S NOT SOMETHING I REALLY LIKE TO DO.
DO SOMETHING YOU'LL BE THE MOST COMFORTABLE WITH THAT'S WHAT IS IMPORTANT

The hardest part is starting off, because it's a competative business.

Fewer and fewer companies use labor on their middle class instuments (made in usa but only sees the hands of an immigrant to do basic tasks, rest done by machines). Of course low class instruments are in other contries. Basicly you have to land a job with PRS, Jackson's Custom Shop, Carvin, or some other boutique guitar company to make any money. And you wont since 6 months training wont get you building flamed maple beauties with custom inlays. I don't think companys trust new guys with $5,000 guitars. If you really have a love for the art, then do it. But it will be hard to land a decent paying job.

i'd say build a couple (if you haven't already) of you own guitars. If you dig that, then go into training.

well a good way to land a job there is to build an amazing guitar, because just like any other career, a portfolio is a must.
