Time to be afraid?
Hey, I heard that file sharing is being cracked down on (for real this time). Is it true that the average downloader is being busted and fined for downloading songs?
Some 3.5 million people download songs and stuff every night, so I know that the odds are rare to get caught, but are they actually doing it? I have like 200 mp3s and I haven't downloaded in a few days because I am not sure what is going on now.
Is there anybody a bit more well-informed? I wanna get some new Arch Enemy songs.

Ive heard they are trying to catch the people who have the most songs, a.k.a guys who have their own server and have 14,000 songs shared for others to download. I think that they have already filed 100+ lawsuits...

I rarely download music anymore unless it's a pre-release on irc or newsgroups, but I hope they pop me.

the only people the RIAA is 'cracking down on' are college students who cant afford a lawyer(and therefor cant defend themselves from the idiotic claims that could be pushed back easily by any decent lawyer) and end up having to pay up with their school savings
it's just bullying to get more cash, nothing to see here, move along
personally ive stopped buying cds from labels that are governed by the RIAA(yeah...like there were any anyways? heh RIAA -> mostly pop shite)
and as for downloading mp3s, kazaa is for retards anyways(and its one of the only few that the RIAA monitors...i wouldnt see them on giFT or gnutella and the such)

i'm pretty sure they just want to catch those that upload, not those that download. so if you have no files to share, but are downloading from someone, you should be fine

Yeah my friend told me about a program the goverment are using called "Carnivore". Its for illegal files, child porn, terrorist shit, but it might be soon used for mp3s. What it does is it scans alllllllllll the computers it can get into for certain file names and then they observe and crack down on the person. I doubt though they will use it for mp3 files, its just a romour.

What if you have the mp3's by making them with RealJukeBOx so that
you don't have to keep putting different cd's to listen to your fav. songs?
But you actually paid for the cd.....
I hate the gov. Well, I don't think they'll crack down on Armenians....

NEWSFLASH:
There is a site where you can see a) if the RIAA is after your ass and b) if the music you're downloading is from an RIAA covered artist or not (It has to do with who distrubutes/releases the discs, of course).
If you want it, I'll find it for you. It's really very handy, and a lot of stuff is quite safe to download (example - about half Opeth's stuff was released on non-RIAA labels).

Reasons why I download music:
1.My parents don't like my music or the music I listen to, so why
not listen privately?
2.My parents are hard core christians and will blabor about Christ if they
hear my music
3.Money doesn't grow out of trees, they are made by trees
and not everyone gets alot of money.
4.I try before I buy
5.So I can listen to my favorite songs while on my computer without
having to change cd's every 10 minutes.
6.Alot Death/Thrash/Black Metal cds are not available in my area for sale
