This story outrages me to the point where I've almost put my fist through my bedroom wall. The old man claims to have not known the difference between the brake and the gas(yet he drove through town before that knowing)which is a perfect example of why people his age shouldn't be driving, or at least given the road test again.

The body count is up to 10 people now, the newest being a 7 month old infant last night. The police aren't even sure if they'll charge him. Am I the only one that sees this as insanely fucked up? What the fuck is going on here? If this man was 18 or 20, or 30, or even fucking 50 his sorry ass would be locked up and the key discarded as soon as possible.

I saw a picture of this old man when they released him from custody yesterday. He was smiling at everyone, and hugging the people that picked him up. If I were this man I would be fucking ashamed. ASHAMED. I'd have a bag over my head, and get into the vehicle as quick as possible. There would be no unnecessary, "We're sorry about this unfortunate incident and apologize to the victim's families" shit because you know what? The families aren't gonna give a rats ass right now, especially seeing you all happy go lucky after killing 10 people and injuring another 50 fucking plus.

I think all of you are acting a little prematurely.....i agree that this is a horrible incident and it shouldn't have happened, but he's 86, it's the fucking state's fault for letting him keep his license just as much as it his the man's fault for confusing the gas and brake pedal.


Here in good ol Canada, anyone above 80 (might be 75) has to have their eyes tested every 2 years. Personally i think it should be every year, and start around 65 years old, but it's better than nothing.

This is probably going to bring up a law where senious are tested yearly (which is something that is greatly needed, and is amazing why they didn't do this before). When I first heard the story, I actually felt for the old man (along with the victims). I figured that he must be so ashamed and sorry. Thats when I saw the videos and pictures of him on the news.

Ok, memnoch, I agree some of the responses in this thread have been immature but I'm not out to condemn all old people. This is simply what needed to happen in order for some laws to change, whether in the US or Canada, or wherever else. Elderly people NEED to retake that test, the road test AND the written test.

If it weren't for the fact that he was looking so smug, and the fact that before he ran into the market he plowed into the back of a mercedes, and the fact that he'd ran into his own garage several times, or that he'd ran into a wall at a home a couple years ago, I might be a bit more sympathetic. But, all of that, combined with the needless killing of 10 people is just more than a man can forgive. The state, by law is not responsible for him carrying a license at his age as he's never had to take the test again. HE alone is responsible for his conduct behind the wheel. Judging from his past conduct, there is no reason why he should be driving an automobile, NONE AT ALL. He is at fault, and whoever else allowed him to get into his vehicle.

I'm tellin you, if this guy were 20 years old, everyone would be singing a different tune and he'd be in jail with no fucking bail.

Of course if he would 20 I would want him thrown in jail but he probably dosent even know what he did.

I agree with you, if he were 20 the story would be over by now. But that's because most 20 year olds have much better reflexes too. If a 20 year old ran down 50 people, and he said "i got the 2 pedals mixed up" no one would believe him. But an 86 year old is much likelier to be telling the truth because it's much more possible that he blacked out or basically freaked out and panicked, stepping on whatever pedal was underneath his foot at the time.

You said the state is by law not responsible for his carrying his license or driving at his age. Then who the fuck is? (note: not getting mad at you slayme, just more of a rhetorical question thing) I don't know how licensing works in the states, especially any specific state at that, but here you need to renew your license every 5 years, that means getting a new picture, a new card and an eye test. Once you hit a certain age it's every 2 years.

I know that state doesn't have those laws implemented yet, but i honestly think that this whole situation can't solely be blamed on the poor old man......if the state isn't responsible for his driving condition at his age, he shouldn't have a driver's license i the first place....especially if he's driving into his garage and walking into walls.

I think at most this man should get a fine, and a hell of a fucking road test. Unless it can be proven that he deliberately ran down those people (which i highly doubt), then there's no need to put him in jail for life (3-4 years max??) or execute him (he's dying soon anyways). A fine for doing something stupid which unfortunately cost 10 people their lives.

How someone can make the statement that "I confused the pedals" and not immediately be set on fire by all concerned is the puzzling part. What he probably meant (rather than the prima facie STUPIDITY of that statement) is that he panicked and tromped on the gas instead of the brake - that happens all the time.

Australian drivers are road-tested EVERY YEAR after they turn 80. My grandfather recently failed his test at 94, and they took away his licence at lightning speed because he's a loony old fuck.

People who got their licence when they still delivered stuff on horse and cart probably learnt the ability to drive under *slightly* different circumstances.

At the end of the day, he's a stupid old fucker and I hope the guilt leads him to slit his own throat.

You get your license and then that's it, they're not required to retest you so you really can't put any blame on the state although I'm fairly certain this is where it will ultimately fall.

To be sent away with a revoked license, or fine, or both or whatever abso-fuckin-lutely minimal punishment would be possibly one of the biggest injustices I've ever seen. This man KILLED 10 people. He injured 50+ others. To shake a finger and say, "bad old man, bad old man!" is ludicrous.

I talked with my grandparents about this yesterday, I actually picked up the phone with the specific purpose to ask them their thoughts on this. I never talk to my grandparents, so you get the idea. They told me that they've tromped on the gas by mistake before, but not repeatedly. There is a point when you realize, "Oh shit, that ain't the brake! Hot damn!". It doesn't take 70 fucking bodies flying in your face to figure that out, that man's story is a giant load of shit.

One of the things that bothers me here is that if you go to one place they're lenient with oldsters taking the eye exam and stuff, but the other DMV is a lot stricter with everyone. It's not safe or fair. I don't think the old guy should get the chair, but it hould be mandated that the test be more frequent after a certain age. I know a guy in his 90's that's blindin one eye. He drives all over town and has for years ! I 've never heard of him getting in a wreck though. I hope I haven't jinxed him saying that.
When this guy had the accident 10 years ago on film, that should have made family aware that something should be done. I know we have some public transportation and even cab services that the elderly can use for certain things free of charge.
What a horrible thing for all those people involved. He was as bad a drunk driver. I have pity for him , too.

I truly believe that the old man really isn't that upset by the whole thing. He just seems to act like someone who just woke up and found their house to be toilet-papered. Sort of a "Well it happened, so that's that, move on" type of attitude.
