Clever CLEVER CLEVER. Someone's had me well fooled, as you can obviously see.
It was so patently ridiculous that I didn't post it straight away. Even after I saw the story on fark.com, zfilter, Scoop and probably on Rotten News or something else as well. I saw at least 4 separate agencies carrying the story.
Here's how they really cracked me - the clever thing they did was take an imprint of Metallica's site, hosted it elsewhere and put the news article on it. So, you could read about it (on what you thought was actually Metallica.com) and if you wanted to check if the site was real the links were all in there - and you could surf the rest Metallica site through links from the fake one to the real one. Cle-fucking-ver!
Of course, you'll notice if you go straight to www.metallica.com you won't be able to find a goddamn thing about it.
That other band believed it as well! They had something on their website that said "A Statement on the Metallica Thing to be Released Soon". I wouldn't be surprised if this was actually them... how many people went to their site and listened to all their music to find the 'rip-off'? A fucking GEM of a marketing idea eh?
I think it's indicative of how much people believe these guys smoke cock that we were all willing to believe that immediately.

The various court actions they've taken were over anyone, ANYONE, using the name Metallica in any context. The lipstick company, for example, were releasing a number of 'metallic' coloured lipsticks, the tire company a tire with metal alloy in it. Hardly big brand infringements that would confuse people, but they took action anyway and forced the names to change.
This is exactly the same way a big business rabidly protects its "brand". Virgin (the Richard Branson company) just shafted a local band here in Australia because they had 'Virgin' in their name. Same ridicuouls inhuman over-extension of the idea of brand protection.
Metallica isn't a band any more. It's an industry. And everyone in industry is a big flapping infected cunt.
