You listen or play what you like and then you take it a step further and branch to your own style. It works like that with writing lyrics and poems sometimes, too.
There's certain people I have a very high regard for and I try to do like they have done. But I use my own ideas and I'm very flexible in my styles. I've been doing a progressive rap at the other forum where I mod that's a gas , but I also posted a more 'normal' sad love song , too, in another thread.
Don't be overly cautious about copying if it isn't blatant. After all there is nothing new under the sun. You just have to make it sound that way.
