how bad u gotta suck at singing bfore you shouldnt sing in a band? with practice i can hit some notes and shit. but im definatly not a good singer! i sound alittle like dylan, and can sound alittle like tim of rancid. i dont know if i'll ever be able to get "good", but sould i try picking it up anyway?

I think that anyone can sing, but it definately is a matter of practise. I once thought that I could never sing but once I practised a bit its started sounding OK. Try and practise to some easy stuff, which may not even be metal but it will help you out, and then just try to sing heaps of different stuff so you can work out what you are good at and what your style is and shit.

yeah, you should friends check out your voice, your own opinion often is not very objective, asking others will help you way more.

In my response to the Essay thread, part of the message was words told to Les Paul. "Don't say you can't til you prove you can't." Even if you're not that good, do some practicing of arpeggios, sing in the shower, or your car (if you have one) and other less intimidating places. (What's bad is when your kid comes out to the back acre while your out on the mower and they tell you you're singing "Faceless Man" loud enough to be heard up at the house ! At least I'm not too bad, but I thought that was funny.) Maybe your Dylanesque voice may be a signature voice like many artists have. I mean you know folks like Dylan, Sting, Cocker, Nelly, Jay Z, Wylde, Young, Stapp....just by voice.
When you practice, don't drink any dairy products beforehand. It screws up some pitches sometimes. And don't strain your voice either.
Wally's first band's singer was not real great. He had the pitch and all , but you couldn't understand what he was saying. He sounded like Scott Stapp with a bad cold ! The second singer was really good. The next band was very metal and a lot of screamy stuff .The singer said half the time he forgot the words so he'd yell anything. Not a way to run a business, but they sounded good, too. Although when they did "I Hate Fred Durst" in L.B. style it was more mellow and really funny.
