Public domain recording?
Hey, while I'm on a question spree, let's keep it going.
I'm arranging a fairly large event and was thinking it could be a nice thing to have some very low volume music running in the background; y'know, space filler. Now, we don't have any budget for this to start buying licenses and paying royalties and shit, and the whole thing is just too open and official to even wanna take a miniscule risk of getting into legal trouble.
So yea, basically I'm just looking around to see what's the actual deal with public domain music. If I've understood it correctly it's really only sheet music that's completely free to use, not recordings. But hey, if anyone knows different I'd be glad to hear about it.

I pm-d you this since something wasn't working right with posting, but I'll post it here in case anyone else wants to know. She's performed music and directed musicals and other productions she's written for about 40 years now.
"There is TONS of music that is public domain...really...he can just play the radio if he wanted to...or record off the radio itself and use that...that is considered public domain, or so I am told.
There is a statute of rights with music...and I forget the date/year...that after a certain year it is public domain.
Also, anything like hymns, christmas carols, older songs like that...can be used.
AND>..If he gives recognition to the piece and composer I think you can use the song also, as long as it is BACKGROUND music...
that's what I know about it..."
