First My appologizes if this has been asked already a million times but I haven't found any traces of it. so...
Why do you listen to metal?
cause I haven't been able to say why. I just like it
Maybe it's for the harsh vocals
or for the speed or...?

I very often like the lyrics. Also, the looks, and the, like, culture, I mean, the company of other people who like metal and the way they behave. Well, actually, I probably go for gothic more than for any other kind of metal, but still...

Diversity- most people don't realize it, but metal is a very diverse style
of musick, you have Black Metal, Death, Power, Doom, Gothic,
Thrash, Industrial, Grindcore, progressive, etc. I've heard of
metal that you would only hear of once, such as Fuzz Metal,
Pagan Metal, Spiritual Metal, etc.
The lyrics- some lyrics are gothic, vampyric, dark romances, etc;
some are about death, suicide; some are more religious than
others, satanism, paganism, etc. Plus, the bands write their
own lyrics.
The vocals- Vocals can be anywhere from Tarja (nightwish) to George
Fisher (Cannibal Corpse) to Shagrath (Dimmu Borgir).
Depending on your mood you can listen to whatever style
you want. You can listen to singing that actually takes talent,
and practice, or you can listen to vocals that are drowned
out by the singers own distortion, simplicity. If you listen to
actual singing than it gives it a melodic feel, if you pay attention
you'll notice that deep grinding death-metal vocals bring out
the beat and make the guitar riffs sound more brutal, you'll
also notice that those death metal riifs sound better with
the deep distorted vocals.
The riffs- unlike most musick, except for classical, jazz, etc., it takes actual
talent to be able to play guitar like Kerry King, or drums like
Adrian of COF. It can be hard to keep up with these guys. Anyone
can sit down and play korn or good charlotte, that doesn't take talent,
but to be able to play bands like Deicide or Emperor, that might take
a few years of practicing every day.

This may seem like a big thing to say, but I truly believe metal is the ABSOLUTE most diverse music ever. You can find metal bands that make the fastest, most brutal music ever, or ones that make the softest, most relaxing music.
From goth to melodic death, there is always something for me, no matter what I am in the mood for.

It doesn't matter what they look like. I like a few HammerFall songs, and I think they they are a bunch of ass jockeys. Same goes for Manowar.
Sure, I like songs like Manowar songs like "Warriors of the World United", but I will still jump on the opportunity to rip them a new ass asshole (although the cover of "Anthology" would suggest that they just prefer to widen the ones they already have......ZING!)

Genres like that are just pulled out of the bands asses so they can think they are original. Just because you play something like black metal, but change one very insignificant thing, doesn't make it a whole new genre. If you play death metal with spriritual lyrics, that is not "spiritual metal", it is death metal.

I listen to it because its the ONLY form of music that gets a message across to me...Some people say I'm narrow minded for listening to only metal (except for Gary Moore and Neil Zaza) but they don't realize how many forms of it there is...they think its just loud and all about speed and the devil.

I listen to metal for two reasons:
1) Metal is good music, it takes high skill with instruments and teamwork to produce quality metal, it inspires me, just like any other complex piece of art.
2) A lot of it is very insightful both lyrically and musically(Dreams of Sanity is a prime example)
I mean, I like lots of type of music, classical, old rock, some jazz, but none other then metal fit both these reasons.
Any type of music that lacks either of those I pure fucking despise.

I listen to metal for creativity. For example, i dig different solo recording techniques that morbid angel uses. I'm totally down with Opeth mixing acoustic material and metal and mixing it well. For me to listen to any music it needs to have something in it to set it apart from the rest.

I totally agree with RomikQ - there are some amazing musicians who play metal. I think that most pop "musicians" don't know crap about music, but most metalheads know some theory stuff like chords and scales. Who here thinks Brittany Spears knows the difference between her scales? Also, the lyrics are so much deeper than most popular music - they actually delve into things and explore some of the darker stuff that scares a lot of people. LONG LIVE METAL! |
