well for black metal it helps to give it that kinda black metal type sound that i kinda conect black metal with but any other metal and it just sounds kinda bad in my opinion

Aint there keyboards in some of their songs? Correct me if Im totally wrong, but I guess theres some in suicide nt.1? But its a good thing that they dont use them like CoB or smth. So theyre mainly w\o them...

And to the topic: It depends, Like Wally said, Its cool for bands like that and stuff like Rhapsody etc. Its also almmost necessary for gothic bands like Two witches.

I think it really depends on the song and not the band. If the song is enhanced by keyboards, then go for it.

Keyboards can almost always make metal even better ( Not brutal death metal and grindcore, so no one whine at my opinion)

Even great bands like Arch Enemy, while they dont have a keyboardist, in the production credits, it will say "Keyboards played by......." Many bands use them here and there.

Here are some great bands with keys:

Nightwish
Type O Negative
Theatre of Tragedy/Tristania/Trail of Tears/Sins of Thy Beloved

However, those bands know how to use keyboards and still keep a cool metal sound. Bands like Rhapsody use keyboards to immitate old orchestral instruments that were played all the way back in the Dark Ages so it gives their music a medevil "battle music" sound. It doesnt work well and just makes the music gay.

After Forever is another band that uses keys in the wrong way. They are a goth band, so keys are a must, but they use keys just for synths and strings, giving the music a more orchestral sound, which really gets repetitive fast.

Bands like Tristania and Sins of Thy Beloved know how to write good key lines. They use cool synths, orchestral hits (one of my favs), saws, arpegiators, etc. This makes the music interesting.

Look how much a band like Dark Tranquillity improved with the addition of an electronics person. It makes their music so much better.

It all depends on the way you use them. Stratovarious sometimes will use keys in a great way, like on "Hunting High and Low", and sometimes they totally have their heads up their asses with ther keys, like on "Freedom". Timo should let Jens write more of his own keyboard lines.

Also, on a final note, for the people that say, "They like real piano and violins rather than keys", I honestly believe you are lying, I love the keys, and I cannot tell the difference between a grand piano and the grand piano setting on my Roland RS-9. Listen to "Love You to Death" by Type O Negative, you will in no way be able to tell that the violin and piano is done on a keyboard.

To an extent I think they are awesome in DM bands. Like Dark Tranquility. I really don't like if bands use them though if they don't have an actualy keyboardist because then they usually don't do it live, unless its playedback. It creates great atmosphere.

I wouldnt of thought keyboards would sound good on thrash metal, or metal, or whatever, but the black metal band dimmu borgir, track 4 on one of there albums , erm cant rememeber it, 'moon' something its sort of dark blue, the dimmu logo on the front, anyway yeah the track is awesome, i would try and learn it (if i had a chance) if i knew how to read music.

I like when there's some keyboard (synth, piano or harpsichord) BUT not overused. I really love the way CoB use keys. But with keys the music is softer.

Keyboards were the main reason I started listening to CoF and Black Metal....

For those of you that are Dark Tranquillity fans, do you enjoy the last 3 albums with keyboards? As for me I enjoy them because they can only make one Gallery and Sky Dancer, then it gets redundant.

They are so much better with the electronics. Songs like Monochromatic Stains (they always have such cool song titles) sound so cool. It gives it a "rising hope" sound. If there was a movie where people were rushing to diffuse a bomb or something, that music could be played during the climax.

Hahahahahaha I guess it does sometimes give it a more optomistic sound. But I hope they do the next album with out keboards, I want to hear them without it now that they (in my opinion) have got more melodic. That and the keyboardist looks like elvis.

it depends on the band. i was slightly disappointed with 'in flames - clay man' and 'machine head - supercharger' because of their use of keyboards...they would have sounded better without them in my opinion. but albums like 'sentenced - the cold white light' sound pretty good with um. overall im against keyboard use.
