Decision Time
Well, through all my efforts to start a band, they have all failed miserably due to having bad company to work with. I cannot find ANY ONE PERSON who has the dedication I do to this. However, through it all I have accumulated enough equipment to have a band. I have 2 keyboards, a bass, a guitar, a PA (with mics and everything else), and a recording system soon to come, and probably a drum machine.
Yet, I have realized that at my current location at a suburb of Cleveland, I will in no way find the people I am looking for. So, I need to move most likely.
I have a few choices:
"The Jon Schaffer Method"- I can take what I got and drive down to Florida where there may be a better metal scene. Being that I just recently graduated, I only took a few Community College classes, so the jobs availible down there would be shitty, but the music scene would be good.
Campus Band- I can go to a real college, and hope to find some other people. The good thing is that we would all generally have the same schedule and could practice many times a week. Plus, the college would have great recording and pratice suites. However, if I cant find anyone (I know I would need a drum machine), then I am screwed for 4 years.
Stay Put- Or, I can increase band personal adds and still try in Cleveland, however, it has been aboput 8 months a hard searching, an I could not even find one lasting person. How am I supposed to find at least 3 lasting people then?
I wonder what California's metal scene is like................?
whew...........
So what do you think I should do?

what would i do is get a good college degree first, so if my music career doesn't work out, i got something to fall back on.
after that, maybe get a good job (if you're still not finding anybody), save up some money, and when you got enough, quit it, then try moving to somewhere else where the scene is better, and tryin to set up a band.
that's what i'd do.

I thought california's punk scene was better...
Yeah, I'll hava to agree w/ atifman, get a college degree so you won't be a dumb jackass on the street jaming out on... whatever it is that you jam on. Im sure if you look hard enough in Cleveland, you'll find someone that you can work with that's just as deicated as you.

yeah, but what are the band scenes like down in college? do a lot of bands actually form.
however, with the degree, I really dont wanna wait 4 years, get a degree in something I hate (no college classes interest me), and then continue from where I am at now, which is nowhere.

i say get out of clevlend, and go to a college,
at a major school like a university, there's bound to be someone
who plays good, it IS college, no high school dickweeds.
...and damnit, major in music.

you coudl major but lets be honest do you really want to? all they do is teach you theory which gets extremely boring after awhile its good to have yes but as chuck shuldiner said "theory is boring and i dont wanna do somethign that bores me" or somethign along those lines

why do "they" call it theory, if it does exist?

Studying music at college would be an awesome thing to do. Learning theory could only improve your musicianship and help creativity. Even if music thoery bored you, wouldnt it be better than learning seomthing else which wouldn't neccessarily be you intersest. Also, if the band thing doesn't work out, you could get a job in many different areas involving music ie. session playing (fucking cool), teaching (boring but good money) etc.

I think that's not good because if you become known you'll have a lot of fags following you.
what you could do is move down here to Florida ...maybe Ft. Lauderdale or Tampa ... there's a good metal scene here

Thats what I hate about Cleveland. Everyone wants to be in a rock band or in a cover band (usually AC/DC).

I'd go to college. There's always a good possibilty to meet people, who want to play in a band.
At least in germany. Bands in school are really shit. But at the university you meet people from the whole country and you'll find people that are good and want to play the same music.
BTW you've got the chance to learn a nice job.
PS
In germany you can go on any university in the whole country you want to. How does it wotk in USA? Is it the same or do you have to go to the nearest university in your region?

WE get alot of bands around here, and good ones to, when ever a band tours they usally do it around l.a. and or hollywood or some where in the middle. But as for new bands, we really lack there, all the new bands are sooooooooooo shitty. Get a degree down here we have some nice music colleges

It's too bad you didn't say anything earlier man.. I just moved from Columbus like a month ago.. Wally's in Ohio..and I thought there was another person from Oh too.. We could've all jammed.. I would've driven to Cleveland..
If you're thinking about going to college go for it. It's the best choice to blow thousands upon thousands of dollars to get an education in something that you won't even work in Every person I know that's gone to college of any sort isn't doing anything remotely close to what they majored in.. I think the only thing college really shows an employer is that you stuck with something for 4 years that's about it.. And if you do happen to get into a job that you majored for you won't be making the money that they promise you. So don't go and major in anything too specific unless it's something that's in dire need in the workforce.. As for bands at College.. I'm sure there are alot of bands at most.. There's only one thing i'd look out for though.. I lived in columbus for 2 1/2 years and not ONCE did I see a good metal band come out of OSU.. so I wouldn't waste your time there.. unless you want to riot alot haha anyways..
Getting up and just moving for a music scene isn't a good idea.. And chosing where to move is another choice.. over here in Chicago/milwaukee area we have a HUGE goregrind scene but not much for black.. A little Death, Doom, and stoner.. but not much.. So it all depends on what type of metal you want.. alot of areas are saturated with a certain type from what i've noticed.. I dunno.. I'd shoot for the 4 year degree in my opinion... just pick something you can live with for 4 years and won't get sick of after 20 minutes..
Oh yeah and one more option is.. Get together with some people online that all have recording capability.. you can all record your own tracks and have one person put them together.. you wouldn't be able to jam with them.. but for recording purposes that would work fine.. All depends on what you want..

I probably would have gone to hang out with you guys or something, but I doubt I'd have played. I hardly even touch my guitars or bass anymore.

You can go anywhere you want to in the US. The only difference is:
go to a college in your state - you pay in-state tuition
go to a college out of state - you pay out-of-state tuition (which is more expensive)

Dude if you've got guitars, amps, basses, keybaords, p.a and recording stuff coming, why not record everything yourself, you have complete control, its practise when YOU want and If your commited then it would work.

I think I could get somewhere with a demo, but it is so hard to get a record executive to listen to your demo. The best way to make it in the music business is to have an actual band that performs gigs. Still once I get a lot of cash, I'm gonna get some recording gear, and make a demo. Even though it will probably be in vain cuz no one will even listen to it, I still plan to send it out to all the metal friendly labels.
I wish I could at least find a guitarist, cuz I tabbed my songs on MS Word, and they are almost 4 pages each. To learn all that, plus bass, and keys, would be a real pain....
To play live though, I would need 4 more people (unless I got a drum machine, then only 3)

if a move is a must for you, go to a "real" college. theres plenty of chronicly out of work musicans there. and look on the bright side, after your done with college you can make something outta yourself..

why buy shit first? I think it would be better to seek some musicians first and then worry about the equiptment (unless you can handle all that stuff).
