Gotta PC problem

I bought this Dell Inspiron 531s desktop about 2 weeks ago. I got broadband about a week ago. I know the computer is pretty cheap but something about Windows XP is tripping me out.

After I got the internet hooked up, I downloaded Limewire to get music and porn, obviously, and I'm guessing I got some kind of virus. When I turn the computer on, it shows my wallpaper but no icons....just the wallpaper. In order for me to access anything, I have to Ctl+Alt+Del and press New Task then type in "config". Then the icons and everything shows up. On top of that, I get an error message everytime I start the computer on the "welcome" screen....and it doesn't go away. If I x it out or hit cancel too many times on that error message it will freeze up the PC.

I bought Mcafee Total Protection and did a virus scan and it only showed 1 threat...but when I downloaded other antivirus programs for free it showed I had like 153,000 viruses....maybe I don't know how to properly use Mcafee.

How can I make my computer run normal? I can't call Dell technical support because I can't understand their accents (no offense indian people). Hopefully someone has had the same problem and had experience in fixing it....if not...........SLAYERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

First off, asking for advice on a metal forum isn't your best bet for a computer related answer but I'm going to help you out since I'm technical-savvy.

You're going to want to System Restore to the first day you got it. Just go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Systems Tools > System Restore. Now you're going to System Restore. It's a simple process just follow through, you'll get it.

After this task you're going to want to completely avoid Limewire. I'll PM you on how to get music, safely and faster and for your porn needs have you tried streaming? www.pornhub.com and www.tnaflix.com are great. You should also dig up the torrent thread and learn about them, they are wonderful and make downloading an ease.

Since you're System Restore was a success, assuming so. You're going to download programs that you lost during the System Restore(the antivirus you haphazardly purchased and any other vital programs. Might I recommend: CrapCleaner and SpyBot S&D) and install them. Then you will create a restore point, after the programs are installed, for future use(hopefully you won't have to use).

And sorry to tell you but buying an antivirus was a complete waste. There are multiple free antivirus available to download. AVG 8, AntiVIR, and Avast! to name a few.

Hope this helped, and look forward to my PM.

I tried the system restore a couple days ago and it didn't help.

The free antivirus programs do not terminate viruses already on the computer...you have to purchase that particular brand to do so.

thanks for the PM...that'll help. Fuck Limewire.

Yeah, try steaming porn sites instead. I remember porn from Kazaa crippled a computer of mine a few years ago.

Why didn't it help? Restore Active Desktop usually only occurs after an improper shutdown.

Nah man, AVG purges those buggies from your computer for good(if you click delete virus during scan).

NP man.

System restore is for vaginas. If you want real computer help talk to me. Reqtum is an amature. He told me hes been using computers for like a year now.

First of all everyone here is fucking stupid. You can't get a virus from downloading MEDIA FILES. Viruses come from executable files. Not mpegs, mp3s and so on. Period, end of discussion. You don't have to view streamed porn to not get viruses. Don't go to jackass websites and view stupid forwards that people send out. I don't run ANY virus protection, ever. I haven't on this computer, my last or any computer for the last 4 years. Any viruses? No.

Also, popups can lead to viruses, just so you know. Sketchy ass websites and lead to them, but it is ultimately up to the user whether or not one gets a virus. Don't download and RUN .exe files you don't know what the hell they are.

Next you're a jackass for buying an already built computer and assuming its going to run well. Its ok, you're not a computer person so i guess this is a problem most people come across. (the new computer i bought, if i bought through alienware or dell would cost at least 2 times more, i know cause i priced the exact parts)

If you don't have a copy of windows either download the cd/dvd image or go buy one, borrow one from a friend something. Reformat the computer and start the fuck over. They load those preconstructed computers with the shittest programs and oldest drivers imaginable to the point where it was probably destined to fuck up anyways.

Never call support unless you want to send the shit back for something new. Backup any of the shit you want to save on a cd.

Well yeah. Again its the user completely. Limewire and other older P2P services are loaded with .exe files. They're almost always adware. I haven't gone looking but i honestly have not seen a virus in years.... YEARS.

Most people claim they have a virus because they're way way too ignorant with computers to know what they have. It's the catch all. "I have a virus on my computer." No, you just don't know how to use a computer.

It nowadays is way too profitable to design adware and other non-malicious software that imbeds itself into your computer. I kind of believe viruses are becoming a thing of the past. Thats my humble assessment. Also it is much much more difficult to do it nowadays, and when its done its known about fast enough that you'll actually hear about it before you get it. (usually) It makes news headlines and so on.

Like the good ol classic:
"program.bat" that contains a format c:/
hahaha oh the good ol days.

Oh yeah that "program" you download was just an advertisement to buy their shitty software.

But seriously, stay away from P2P programs. Torrents are the way to go.

I just bought Eset NOD32 not too long ago. Best one I've ever had.

I use Avira. It's free, and only spams you once every couple days with a simple popup. It also has active guard protection with this free version so you get real-time protection.

I also recommend getting a copy of Malwarebytes for your spyware/malware needs. I have found it to be one of the best at not only detecting but safely removing medium and high risk threats. It's also good to run in conjunction with SuperAntiSpyware. You can never have too much protection.

Also, yes a virus can be embedded into a media file. It's just very unlikely, but definitely possible. Google it!

i took it as those are just the ones he tried besides this one, which happens to be running fine, which usually does because there's not more than text to load on most pages
