New Opeth announced!
Didnt see any threads on this here, new album announced on the Opeth.com.
Quote:
2008-02-05
"Watershed" is the name of Opeth´s 9th studio observation. The album has just been mixed and mastered by Jens Bogren with M. Åkerfeldt. The album consist of 7 songs and the titles are as follows:
1. Coil
2. Heir Apparent
3. The Lotus Eater
4. Burden
5. Porcelain Heart
6. Hessian Peel
7. Hex Omega
All the songs have been written by M. Åkerfeldt apart from "Porcelain Heart" which was co-written with Fredrik Åkesson. One additonal track, "Derelict Herds" has also been recorded and this was written by Mikael Åkerfeldt and Per Wiberg. On top of this, 3 cover songs has been recorded. "Bridge of sighs" from Robin Trower´s 1974 Lp with the same title, "Den ständiga resan" (sung in Swedish) by Marie Fredriksson as well as the classic Alice in Chains song, "Would?".
The album was recorded at Fascination street studios during November 1 and December 13. Some addtional recordings were done between January 3rd and 7th. Produced by Jens Bogren and Mikael Åkerfeldt and Opeth.
Says Mikael Åkerfeldt: "I´ve worked so hard with these songs for quite some time now, I´ve listened to 'em a zillion times. I don't hate them just yet! The album sounds great sonically and I think I can hear us evolving as the record plays on. It is taking us somewhere musically and I don't know where. It's very exciting to say the least! I can't remember having enjoyed a recording this much ever before."
The cover was (as usual) designed by Travis Smith in co-operation with Åkerfeldt. Release date is yet to be confirmed but Roadrunner worldwide will have it out sometime in the Springtime of this year.

Fucking AIC?? Can't wait wait to hear how that sounds. Want!!

I discovered this news a while back yet I never said anything. Yes, I'm really looking foward to the Would? cover.
I hope they'll continue to be my favorite band after this album. I'm afraid to hear what they sound like without Peter.

I wonder why you would post in this thread then.
In regards to the difference without Peter, I really dont think there will be much of one. Akerfeldt writes most of the material, the only thing I think that will be missing are his solos which were definitely unique. We'll have to see what Fredrik brings to the table.

It's just I'm miss those beautiful bluesy solos. I hope he's not out for good.
And did you get from sn from The Valtiel Sect of Silent Hill?

Hopefully this'll be better than the bollocks that was the last album... hopefully Per wasn't allowed to do much Keys, and they went back to the older style Opeth. I'm not holding my breath though, Ghost Reveries was a big departure from the rest of their (great) material.

Which solos in particular? I never really thought of Peter as a very "bluesy" player.
And yes, thats where my name came from, specifically Valtiel the character himself, gold ole' valve turner!

That album did polarize a lot of people, its strange I find that I dont care to listen to it very much, and it definitely has my least favorite Opeth songs, with the exception of Reverie, yet I dont not like it. I dunno, the way Mikael writes just clicks with me I guess.
I do have to say though that I like the keys. What dont you like about them?

Peter plays most of the blues and slower solos. Even though Ghost Reveries is my least favorite album, he plays a lot of beautiful bluesy solos like in Hours of Wealth. It's strange that one of my favorite blues guitarist is a white guy from Sweden.

Im pretty sure that Akerfeldt does the bluesy solos. The solo on Hours of Wealth is VERY similar to the solo on Porcupine Trees "Arriving Somewhere But Not Here" which was played by Mikael. I actually dont think Peter plays any of the slower bluesy solos, most all the leads on Damnation were Mikael as well.

I think you are getting the guys confused, cause I can only think of one remotely bluesy solo that Peter plays and thats on "In My Time of Need".

No trust me, I know the members of Opeth. They're my favorite band. But I haven't seen the dvd since it first came out so I could be confused. Let's just agree to disagree.
Ironically, The Valtiel Sect is the name of the Opeth-ish one man project I'm working on. Think of Opeth meets the creepiness of a Silent Hill soundtrack.

Akerfeldt plays ALL of the slower blusy solos. Peter plays the weird dissonant arpeggio driven solos.
A much bigger loss to the band is Martin Lopez. His jazzy and tight hand work will probably be missed.

I got ya. I never really get to watch Opeth live much, they never come to Tennessee or anywhere near here. My friend Charles told me Peter played a lot of the slower solos when he saw them play so I always imagined him playing the slower stuff.
Yeah Lopez is a big loss. Axe is good but no Lopez.

Assuming that given your avatar that your a Necrophagist fan, I wouldnt go into a thread about their new album and say that I couldnt stand listening to them. I think its just rude. No offense or anything its just a pet peeve of mine.
In regards to Axenrot, hes definitely no Lopez and he will surely be missed, but after listening to Bloodbath's "Nightmares Made Flesh", im excited to see what kind of heaviness Axe will bring.

Thats cool, opinions like that I think are better in "How do you feel about this band" kinds of threads. Just out of curiosity, what do you not like about them?
