For any computer tech-heads...I've got a problem

Last night I walked into the room, and upon entering smelled something like burning rubber/plastic. Checked all the outlets, guitar equipment...etc. and found no problems, but realized it was coming from the computer. Now I turned it off for the night, and upon entering the room again this morning, no smell.

But the smell is returning now that the computer has been on for a couple of hours. My question, I suppose...what could be malfunctioning/causing the smell?

My guess is that I need a new fan and that the powersupply may be overheating, but any other ideas would be great.

That's what I'm thinking. List your specs and the watts your power supply puts out.

Look on your power supply. And for your specs go to Start > Run > dxdiag.

Sounds like something is overheating. Even if this doesn't directly solve the problem, it will help prolong the life of your computer and the components contained... get some compressed air in a can from your local wal-mart, staples, or computer store and blow out the internals.

Just being curious, I checked the CPU usage, what's astonishing is that it is 36% and there are no applications besides firefox operating, so I think at some level something is causing the computer to over-work itself. Hmm.

Do this and just list what it tells you.

There is only one way to check that(or at least to my knowledge) and that is by opening up your CPU and looking for a sticker containing the information. With those specs I wouldn't expect you to need a high powered PSU. Just take Dave's advice and get some compressed air. It works wonders and lots of things so it isn't a waste of money.

Well the computer is a Dell manufactured computer so unless you've added alot of extra peripherals since you've purchased it, you shouldn't need a bigger power supply, but that still doesn't mean it couldn't be burning up on you. Get some compressed air and make sure to blow out all heatsinks and fans especially the fan and entrails of the power supply. If any heatsink or fan has dust on it, it will help insulate the heat and cause the tolerance levels of the components to exceed their limits thus shortening the life of the components.

I shall try the compressed air first, see if that helps. I cleaned out what I could with a tissue last night. Helped a little. The computer is a 2000 make, don't know if that will help any of you ballpark whether any components would be hitting the end of their lifespan soon. Thanks so much for the support so far.

I myself have some sort of problem too. I own a Dell Dimension 8300 PC, no problems so far, good machine, love it. But since this morning I have an issue with its speakers: they shift volume for no reason.

When listening to music, the sound will all of the sudden go down or up (not that bad, but bad enough to be véry annoying), and after a few seconds back to normal, ...

Anyone know how this may be solved? Or why this is happening in the first place?

Thanks in advance.

Possible faulty speakers... Try using headphones and see if you still get the fluctuation, if so, then you can narrow it down to a software/hardware (sound card) issue and not the speakers.

Problem solved. New computer is on the way, I'll be salvaging what I can from the system. From the looks of things, it was an old power supply, non-working fan and the mobo wasn't in great shape when I opened the case. And the hard drive was going too, as evident in the inability to read the disk upon startup. But hey, its seen almost a decade, so its about time anyways.

dell's are notorious for overheating, you're lucky it didn't start a fire.

The fan was in terrible shape, barely working, and it was a cheaper model as well. I'm building my own this time around, should be worth the extra time and money. Getting more bang for the buck too, intel duo core processor @ 3.0ghz each i believe, so thats around 6 collective. 1gb ram should suffice for music editing, and i already have two m-audio soundcards so it may be cheaper this way anyways. The dell is going to become a project computer for now, as time permits.

If i was building my own pc man I'd be sure to get a Quad motherboard. Some DDR2 Ram (Around 1-2 Gigs Worth). Either a Radeon Video Card Or Geforce. Maybe get a Barracuda harddrive from seagate. (160 gigs, also belive they have a 5 year warranty deal now). Might search around for a powersupply on Tiger Direct Some pretty good ones at a low price show up. Get a soundcard from Auzentech, and finish it off with a badass case from Xoxide . I'd actually be tempted to go with a Water cooled computer.

Be one Good Pc.

Quad core and no 8800? Come on man, if you're spending that much cash you might as well get the best graphic card. (and DDR 3 RAM) =D

Thanks for your input man, I actually have some things I haven't bought yet, I'll take them into consideration. Right now I'm set on soundcards, actually, running three of them, two firewire cards for recording, and one audigy for playback/mixing/mastering.

Get one firewire interface, like a MOTU 828, and that will do you fine- you don't need two firewire cards, especially as you can daisy chain upto 3 units on one firewire bus... my guess is that you're not going to have 24-96 in/outs in your recording setup. You'll commonly get 8 simultaneous inputs from one interface, and thats without any ADAT expansion. Most firewire interfaces have the provision for monitoring with low-latency, so you don't need an additional sound card. The only thing you might want that for, would be if you're going to still keep your normal computer speakers to have as a reference, as well as your monitors.

And you'll need to budget for a couple of widescreen monitors and a dual-head graphics card, as one monitor gets mighty congested when you're mixing

[Update]

New PC comes.
Unfortunately with onboard sound.
Worst part is. It doesn't work. No devices installed is what it says under audio devices. Installed codecs and drivers to no avail. I'm hoping one of you can shed some light on the situation. Here's the motherboard I have, that has the onboard sound (only for use until I can afford a creative soundcard)

Wolfdale1333-D667

I read the manual and searched online, but all information was vague. Thanks!

Searched google and first results I got this

It clearly has audio, lan, and video drivers.

Oh I know it has them, I've installed them already, and to no avail as I stated above. Not sure what is going on, although I do know it said something along the lines of there is no mixer in operation, which would explain not having the little sound thing next to the clock.

You probably need to enable the onboard audio from the BIOS menu.

And the hard drive was going too, as evident in the inability to read the disk upon startup. But hey, its seen almost a decade, so its about time anyways.

From your first post I was going to tell you that your case fan had smoked itself and the power supply would soon follow. Most economy PCs from 10 years ago only have one fan and once you smell it then time is short. I have seen it many times.

If its going to be a project PC then replace the case fan first ( They need to be replaced once every few years anyway ), open and clean the power supply of dust, plus check for "capacitor plague" on both the power supply and mobo. Caps are the first things to die of old age in all electronics. Amps included save for tubes. One bad cap can ruin everything and I have seen it happen hundreds of times.

1st step - unplugg the pc from the wall, take off side case. With side case off unplugg the main power supply from the mother board.(Should be the only big white connector on the motherboard). Leave it unplugged for around 10-20 seconds and start pressing connectors, ram, modem, sound card back into their slots. After this connect the motherboard back up to the power supply, and connect the pc back up. Should do it.

One question, if the sound is onboard, how abouts would I go about disconnecting it? I've had terrible luck with onboard sound, may just succumb to putting a PCI soundcard in.

Don't disconnect it press on it, press on everything(not hard enough to brake it but to just put a little stress on it)

If this doesn't work is either the speaker set up it self(wires, speakers) or a driver is needed.
