Should I play another instrument...

since I quit bass and have no intention in learning guitar. I was thinking violin or something but I'm definitely not rich or wealthy and I wouldn't won't to spend money and then quit.

Should I just GTFO and go wank or learn a new instrument?

the violin would be cool. i've thought about giving it a go. why'd you quit the bass? i have to admit i've been slacking on the guitar for a couple months and soon won't be able to play, but i plan on getting back into it once i'm a free man again.

Bass just seems like an instrument for social use. You typcially need to play with others to make it sound good. No leads, etc. I just want something to relax to. Thinking in that perspective the guitar would sound like an instrument to play and so does the keyboard. A reasonably priced keyboard with realistic sounds would be pretty awesome. Especially since I love classical and video game music.

You can get a beginners violin over here for about £50, so there isn't really a financial barrier there!

Save up and buy a drum set! I've been wanting to buy a cheap set for some time now but I don't because I wouldn't have the time for it.

Should i wipe my ass after a good shit?......

It’s really up to you man, what instrument do you seem to have the most passion for? Really this is a question you can only answer on your own. The main question you should ask your self before going out and wasting money is, "Do I have enough enthusiasm to truly learn this instrument".

Maybe you just need to explore other things, music/lifewise until the bass calls you again. I took a year off between 2005 and 2006 and didn't even touch the guitar until winter 2006 (too much shit in my life before then.) Now I'm into it more than ever. But during that entire year I learned how to sing/growl/etc as well as started taking better care of my body and being active. It all led me back into respecting and holding interest in music and the guitar again (especially death metal, I was a total BM freak before.)

That's ironic dude, those are the exact reasons why I want to GET a bass.

surely also if you don't know what to get, you can't be sure you want to learn it, meaning you'd probs give it up pretty quickly.

cheap options that are great.

ukelele - cheap and great fun to play. only 4 strings to work with as well (if you've played bass) different and you can still get the sing songs going.

harmonica - get sick and everyone over here will respect you

MANDOLIN ...you can get a good cheap one for 150-200 bucks that isn't a piece of shit. I don't recommend spending any less on an instrument unless you don't care at all about the quality.

Go with keys or drums, but keys is a better choice. It's hard to find keyboard players. I tried to play violin, I still have mine too. It's really, really, really hard to play. Keyboard is really cool I've started playing on my girlfriends keyboard a lot. It's a lot of fun playing low triads with a choir voice. very Dimmu-ish (Enthrone Darkness Triumphant stuff)

i mean, if you know how to tremelo pick, your halfway there. it's just a different tuning (GDAE) and strings come in doubles, like on a 12 string guitar. also, the frets are way fuckin smaller so you can play some really ridiculous chords on a mandolin. i like mine.

The bass *could* be anything you want it to be, tho. If you don't usually hear it utilized to your satisfaction.......than utilize it as it should be. By all fucking means.........do what other people won't.

I say don't drop it. No matter the instrument, you are presented with same fundamental challenges in regards to writing/composition. As tho there are different techniques and approaches you must learn to operate different kinds of instruments manually.............it's all the same premise.

Like if you are burned out, take a break. There is no time table of progress and no skillset one *must* have. There isn't a status quo for progress as tho it would seem so when knowing other bass players and musicians.

If anything, I'd say take on the drums, if possible. It will open doors into you bass skills..........every guitarist should have some drum experience and be fully cognizant of the count, the structural foundation beneath what they are writing on guitar. There is nothing more frustrating that dealing with a guitarist who can't pace what they write correctly, can't sequence a dramatic change of context.......change in tempo, meter or dynamics.

So.....expand the learning, don't limit yourself. I say don't sell off your shit and start all over again on something else, if that's your intention(it's what alot of people do)

I've decided to go with the keyboard for a few reasons.

-Pretty affordable
-Easily get into a band
-My favorite sounds are made by keyboards (love melodeath, etc)
-Learning it shouldn't be a problem and if I learn keyboard I can pretty much play a piano if I learn theory for piano and songs on it. (lol Charlie Brown)

You need to learn to play some X Japan NOW. EVERY song has amazing basslines and plenty of leads.

if you are going to compose, then yes. if your just going to aimlessly playing others' music, then its not important, nor worth it. not that this is my constant outlook on the matter, but since youve already had experience in the latter, its probably time to move on. especially if you are going to buy a new instrument.

^ There is a lot of great bassists who compose songs alone, so that shouldn't be a problem.

I was going to say, I play bass and write pretty much everything for my band. All you need is moderate knowledge of chord play and what you'd like the guitars to be doing, if different at all.

It all depends on how you play. There's no difference in playing another instrument, you could have a guitar and still run into the same block (needing others etc. leads wouldn't be a problem). It's not what you play, it's how you play it.

exactly, don't just be one of those ignorant fucks who call bass a boring "root" instrument.

just be creative.
