Sorry if there is already a thread somewhere about this, but for some reason the search feature is not working for me. Anyhow, I don't know anything about them. So I ask you.

I know that I want massive amounts of storage capacity. I have about 650 cds, and I know that there are quite a few of them that I want to put on it. I don't plan on doing any videos or whatever, just music. But I don't want to run out of room.

What do you all have? What makes one better than the other? I went to Best Buy website, and there are so many choices that I really don't know where to start. I have tried not to buy one of these "trendy" devices, but I am tired of having 50 to 60 cds floating around my car.

I find iPods to be utter drivel - the sound settings are a joke (no customisable eq). There's a saying among mp3 player reviewers that if you like music don't buy an iPod.

I have a Cowon iAudio X5L 30Gb and it is the best mp3 player I've ever had - the bass settings are absolutely stomach-churning. They also do a 60Gb version which might be more suitable given the amount of music you'll be putting on it.

I can recommend you what NOT to get. Stay away from the Microsoft Zune. My first beef with it was how it holds your hand 24/7 in how you organize your music. Though soon I realized most new MP3 players will do that; problem solved with a program called Media Monkey. I had my Zune for 4 months, it stopped charging one day and thus died. Microsoft refused to recognize my warranty and they never told me why.
Zune version 2.0 just came out but I'm not gonna take anymore chances.

EDIT ::: I'm probably going to get a Toshiba Gigabeat next, those seem to have lots of good reviews.

I really don't have much experience with MP3 playrs but I have had an old iPod thats suited me pretty well. I don't need color or videos or anything and considering everyone and their mother bought three you'll probably be able to find one used for cheap if your price range is slim. Conserning John's comment: while they don't have customizable EQs they do come with about 30 "preset" EQs (Jazz, Spoken Word, Live, Hip-Hop, etc.) although I've never felt the need to put any of these on.

I have a 4th generation 40 gigabyte color photo ipod... I've had it for almost 2 years, I've dropped it several times over 5 feet to the floor, I yank the usb plug out of it every time without turning off the drive on the computer... it's been great to me so far. I really have no complaints. I have to restart it once in a great while, but that only takes a minute or so. It cost me 300 bucks when I bought it in February 2005.

yeah for the record i LOVE my ipod. i had one of the 3rd generations for afew years then it DID die on me unexplicably. but i liked it so much i bought a 4th or 5th gen at best buy and got the 3 year warranty. i think it was like 400 all told and its great.

im always bummed when i see links like steve posted. i paid that much for my 80 gig and now its twice as much for the same price

I have an RCA Mp3 player, it's done me well. Its lasted me along time and i know by now RCA has some newer ones out, a recommended check if you ask me. Mines so old it doesn't support Mp4's or carry over 30-40 songs. I bought it just to take to work so if i dropped it i wouldn't give a shit, considering it wans't as much as an ipod.

Apparently, they seem to be the most reliable. Some people I know who likewise hate the iPod too have gotten one just for that fact.
