List of Sad Music
Hi Everyone!
Lordy Lou I haven't been here in ages!
Anyway, I'm interested in looking in some sad melodic music. For example the song "Sorgen Kammer" by Dimmu borgir in their first album "Stormblast" is a very beautiful song. I want songs in the similar vein. In piano, violins, guitars etc whatever you think is an engrossing sad, sorrowful, melancholic, beautiful song please share. Some folk music is also pretty sad.
Thanks You Metal Heads.

i always found "13 Angels Standing Guard 'Round The Side Of Your Bed" by A Silver Mt. Zion to be very sad, melancholic and absolutely beautiful. It's nothing like Dimmu though, but check it out if you can, it's off the album "He Has Left Us Alone But Shafts Of Light Sometimes Grace The Corner Of Our Rooms"

Uhm.. some of the saddest/sorrowful songs that come to my mind at the moment are:
Empyrium - Fossegrim
My Dying Bride - For My Fallen Angel (but many other songs may be as well)
Forest Of Shadows - Where Dreams Turn to Dust (I cant choose a single song)
Hypocrisy - Paled Empty Sphere
Shape Of Despair - ..In the Mist

Alot of this stuff isn't metal (with obvious exceptions) but it's the saddest music I know.
Ulver - Kveldssanger (album)
Fields Of The Nephilim - songs like "Love Under Will" & "And There Will Your Heart Be Also"
Abyssos - "Together We Summon the Dark" (the instrumental from the same album)
Solefald - "When The Moon Is On The Wave"
Kommunity FK - "Something Inside Of Me Has Died"
Big Black - "Bad Houses" (from the Atomizer album)
Genesis - "Firth Of Fifth" (especially Steve Hackett's guitar solo)
Dead Can Dance - Within The Realm Of A Dying Sun (album)
Love Is Colder Than Death - "The City In The Sea"
Bauhaus - "All We Ever Wanted Was Everything"
EDIT: Crap, how could I forget Priest's "Beyond The Reams Of Death"
Some parts of Devil Doll's works are complete downers as well.
Schizoid, if it's more stuff like Sorgens Krammer you want, I highly recommend getting "Musick In Theory And Practice" by Le Rue Delashay, it's exactly what you're looking for.

Most MDB i'd say, but the earlier albums, the last 2 or 3 are not as 'good' in that sense (and generally).

As an addendum to all I recommended before:
any of the following by Sopor Aeternus & The Ensemble Of Shadows:
Dead Lover's Sarabande Parts I and II
Todeswunsch Sous le soleil de Saturne
I can't recommend anything more sad, or spot on. Both of those albums are like suicidal, depressive chamber music.

Yeah it's considered "darkwave" but it's not like any darkwave I know. Dead Lover's Sarabande uses no keyboards at all as far as I remember; it's all orchestral instruments with a minimal amount of drums. A bit of classical/acoustic guitar. "Todeswunsch" is more ethnic and tribal, it's got folk instruments on it but I have no idea what they are, lots of odd woodwinds. Any keyboards on these albums are really, really lo-fi. There's also some processed-the-fuck-out electric guitar and some acoustic guitar... acoustic drums and tons of ethnic drums, great songs. The singer is totally ghastly and wierd. Never heard anything like it since.

How could I forget!!!
About Summoning I'd say in particular:
Land Of The Dead
Where Hope and Daylight Die
Like Some Snow-White Marble Eyes
for Die Verbannten Kinder Evas:
Catharsis
I'll add also other 2 song for Hypocrisy:
Living To Die
Apocalypse
For My Dying Bride, The Angel and The Dark River and Turn Loose the Swans are the albums I like the most. Shame on me, I dont know they're first one.

Oh, sorry about that.
On a more serious note, anything by the band "the carpenters"
The most self-loathing, suicidal music possible.

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all your replies! I greatly appreciate it. I will check the songs out when I have time.
A couple of you put some Cradle of Filth songs. I'm a big fan of Cradle of Filth and I don't think they make any sad music in my opinion, it is more evil sounding than sad. I can't believe non of you posted graveworm! It is one of the sadest music from a band I have. They did a cover of "Fear of the Dark" by Iron Maiden which a couple of you posted. Non of you posted Anathema! I think they have a lot of sad sounding music.
Thanks Everybody!

Just some songs:
Xasthur- Screaming at Forgotten Fears
Ulver- Vigil
Dawn- The Knell and the World
Thanks to Teh Timez for that album!
Pantera- 10's
Katatonia- Teargas
Pretty every song on Katatonias Last Fair Deal... album is depressive sounding.
