Pandora
Friend introduced me to this really cool site. It works like this: You enter a band name and it creates a "station" for you that plays music that is categorized similarly. Its got an ass load of bands.. I don't remember it not finding any band I put in. I've been using it for a few days and I've found some really cool bands I don't think I'd ever have come across if it wasn't for this site (its actually getting a little frustrating - I don't have the time to invest getting more familiar with all these promising bands!) Check it.

"We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for most listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative."

It's a trade-off. We don't get the RIAA, they don't get IP-blocked from Pandora.

Ah, sorry guys. I didn't know it didn't work for people outside the U.S. Take Chris' advice and try using a proxy.

If you can get this to work, I highly recommend it as well. Fun way to get introduced to new stuff.

Last.fm has a function that is exactly like this. It is open to everyone. Gotta register and stuff though.

I prefer Last.fm. You get to edit the whole radio yourself. So if a crappy band is on there you can take 'em off.

You can do that too with Pandora. Pandora has a pretty detailed way of trying to play music you'd like according to your tastes:
"The Music Genome ProjectŠ
On January 6, 2000 a group of musicians and music-loving technologists came together with the idea of creating the most comprehensive analysis of music ever.
Together we set out to capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level. We ended up assembling literally hundreds of musical attributes or "genes" into a very large Music Genome. Taken together these genes capture the unique and magical musical identity of a song - everything from melody, harmony and rhythm, to instrumentation, orchestration, arrangement, lyrics, and of course the rich world of singing and vocal harmony. It's not about what a band looks like, or what genre they supposedly belong to, or about who buys their records - it's about what each individual song sounds like.
Since we started back in 2000, we've carefully listened to the songs of tens of thousands of different artists - ranging from popular to obscure - and analyzed the musical qualities of each song one attribute at a time. This work continues each and every day as we endeavor to include all the great new stuff coming out of studios, clubs and garages around the world."
