I am arguing with another member of a band over music and shit(it all started when I said Dave Mustaine isn't the "king of thrash" and Megadeth sucks now).

This is what the dude said to me after lots of other arguing.

The only persons i take in mind when writting music are my fellow band mates.Lucky me we are friends since kids,we got the same taste in music,more or less,and we do WHAT EVER THE HELL WE WANT!We take NOONE into consideration when we compose music.If we like it THEN IT'S GOOD FOR US AND THAT'S WHAT MATTERS!We don't care if five million people like it or noone!This is OUR BAND and not our fans band!And that's the way it's supposed to be with all bands!

When a Steamroller Assault fan comes to a gig he KNOWS that he'll listen to donw'n'dirty traditional Heavy Metal,impelling Hard Rock the 70ies style and a couple of blues tunes!And they like it because it comes from THE HEART!Make another band so i can play different styles?HEEL NO!I work my ass off 12 hours per day in my day job so i ain't got no time for other bands!I got ONE BAND,3 other friends that dig the same shit i do AND WE'RE HAVING A FUCKIN' BALL!

Dude play music so you can have a good time with your friends and TAKE OONE INTO CONSIDERATION!It's you that counts,not your fans!"

I don't know, it just sounds fuckin hella self-centered and egotistic to basically say "fuck the fans, its about us".

In reverse its egotistical to think your opinion of the music a band plays means more than dogshit.

A band should be making music because they like to make music. Not to make some pissant on a message board who can't string together a coherent thought happy.

I think it was Handel who took this same outlook on music, he also said that his music had no meaning and it only "was". this meaning he would take great offence to anyone telling him what his music expressed to them.

There is a point where logic should step in, and a band should evaluate what they are doing musically.

I do think there is a point in any bands career, where on one halve you do it for yourself, and on the other halve you do it for yourself and your fans.

When is that point? When the band makes money by selling their music.
If you are 'expressing yourself' by farting into a microphone for halve an hour, more power to you. But don't sell that crap.

If you feel you only have to take your intrest, and your intrest only, into account when making music, stay small. That is what I intend to do.

I didn't really understand which one was like "fuck the fans, its about us", but I kinda agree with that. I'd never do something I don't wan't to do. Of course I don't think like "fuck the fans", because it's them why I'd even be there. But if they don't like my music, they can fuck off. I'm not willing to change my music if someone doesn't like it. I've always done music for myself and that's what I'll always do.

A band that's at all successful has established a brand. If they feel they cannot continue delivering on that brand, or have lost interest in doing so, they should change names. This doesn't preclude change, as there's a lot of latitude, but if you're going to do something radically different, be honest about it.

Example: King Crimson disbanded in 1975. In 1981, Robert Fripp got together a new group of musicians and formed a band called 'Discipline.' As they were playing together, he realized that they were really King Crimson, and changed the name accordingly. However, when he at first thought it was going to be something very different, he didn't pretend there was a continuity.

That's pretty much the obligation I believe bands have to their fans: continuity. I also think a lot of bands should take a page from Captain Beefheart and quit rather than decline, but basically 'I still love doing it' apparently justifies a dozen crappy albums out of a one-good group, as if the only way you're allowed to write music is if it's eventually recorded to disc and distributed at a price. Fuck that.

But, yeah: in general, artists whose work is at all public have an obligation to that public. They aren't bound to them as slaves, but neither are they free from the responsibilities of their role in the dialogue, to just fart about without regard for anybody else. This is regardless of whether or not they're 'small,' unless they're so small that their audience is comprised entirely of themselves. Not everything you make has to be thrown out there anyway.

Yeah, that is the whole point. If you slap a price on your music to sell it to the public, it ceases to be a personal thing imo.
