Haha, thanks. I actually came on here to exclusively check for my birthday post. What can I say, I love tiny ego boosts.

To answer the question; I don't have any Anal Cunt videos any more.

To ask a question; John, can you give me your cell phone number so I can call you and have you explain to me Schrodinger's Cat since I don't understand that example at all.

And infinity, thanks for being an asshole to this collective of douche-tards called MetalTabs.

It's just a roundabout way of providing a thought experiment regarding the changes induced on a quantum system through the act of physically observing it.

So, the cat is sealed in a box along with a source of radiation and while the box remains sealed cannot be viewed or heard. For all intents and purposes, anybody observing the box without prior knowledge of the cat's existence would assume that the box was empty.

Since this "quantum system" has not been observed after the cat was sealed inside the box, there is no way of determining whether enough of the radioactive substance has decayed to produce a lethal dose of radiation that would kill the cat. Therefore, until the box is opened and the system is observed, the cat remains in a quantum state of superposition. In this situation, the cat is said to be in two quantum states at the same time, i.e. both alive and dead.

The physical act of opening the box then determines the state that the cat exists in.

The application of this is to imagine a Hydrogen atom that a scientist wants to observe. The atom cannot be observed until the scientist fires a stream of electrons at it via an electron microscope and therefore exists in a quantum state of superposition. The equations of quantum mechanics can help to determine the probability that the atom occupies a certain position or has a certain velocity (although not both to suitable accuracy - this is Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, although is usually applied to energy and time), but still do not allow for the determination of the state that the atom exists in.

Upon the electron from the microscope's beam striking the Hydrogen atom, it interacts with it to such an extent that it changes the state that the atom was in, i.e. it alters the energy, position and veolicity of the atom. When the scientist then detects the reflected electron (think of it like a light beam being reflected from an object and detected by our eyes), the information it holds is not that of the state the atom was in at the instant it struck it, but that immediately afterwards.

In other words, the Hydrogen atom cannot be observed in the state it existed in before it was struck by the electron. Therefore, it exists in all states allowable (and with corresponding probabilities) according to Schrodinger's Wave Equation (i.e. in a state of quantum superposition). Once the atom is observed, the wave equation is said to "break down".

Complicated stuff - and that's without considering quantum mechanical mathematics!

WOW.

I already understand Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle, but god do I feel dumb for never seeing the point if that cat thing. The parallel is almost to macro to be obvious.

I just recently ready "Alpha & Omega" by Charles Seife which explained the Uncertainty principle wonderfully and made brief mention to Schrodinger's Cat without much elaboration.

Thanks a lot.
