Travelling : New York City
Yup, I'm planning on going there with the girl this august, just for a week or less, due to a limited budget.
So, are there any do's and don't's around NY? My English is allright so I'll probably manage to find my way around and shit.
Any shit I need to keep in mind? I heard you can't drink beer on the street but can you also get a ticket if you're drunk on the street? (walking, not by vehicle ofcourse)
Also, are the cops allowed to search you for drugs on the street? Us beeing Dutch we will probably stand out like tourist. Been to big city's before (Paris, Berlin, London, Rome, Barcelona, but I've never been to NY.)
Bring it on, if anyone knows any good restaurants or bars, it would be welcome as well.

Yeah you can't drink on the street and you will get a ticket for being drunk on the streets.
The cops are allowed to search you. If you are high though and have nothing on you, they can't do any thing. Well they can, but it would be rare.
What part of NY are you going to?

Well, most hotels in the city seem to be near central park.
It's kinda gay that they are allowed to search you, but I guess they only pick you if you look suspicious? (beeing Dutch, that might be a problem..)
I'de like to see a basketball game in madison square garden! (typically American and something you don't get to see over here, at least not in such a massive setting)

you most likely won't have any trouble with the cops. don't do anything to call attention to yourself though. keep an eye out for graffiti. theres lots of it in the city. also it's pretty much the birthplace of graffiti as it's known today. i've only been to the city once, so i'm not too sure on where things are and what to see.

I heard the graffiti is awesome there, like graffiti mecca?
I've seen cool pieces in Berlin and Rome too but NY must be even better according to the stories. Thanks for reminding me about that though!!
Over here in Amsterdam there's some cool shit around too but the cops battle it hard these days..
By the way, are there any websites to find good spots to go out at night? Preferrably not the kinda placed where people will try to put a knife between my ribs. I don't want to go Clog-style on anyone there, that will definetly attract the cops.

a good local city paper is the "village voice", look up show listings there online beforehand.
cops need probable cause to search you, like if you smell like weed or if you are incoherent drunk.
dont smoke on the subways.
your experience there would be better, like going anywhere, if you had someone to meet up with and show you around.
NYC is one of the largest cities in the world and its sheer size can be humbling.
id suggest Astor place, which is a subway stop in the lower east side near alphabet city, alot of cool dives, clubs and greasy spoon joints.
i havent been in that part of town in over tens years but that was the part of manhattan that had the music scene, punk/hardcore/metal, underground shit, comic/music stores, freaks, tattoo joints, alot of college aged folks from NYU.
pst could probably fill you in better, i think he's from queens or the bronx.

NYS state law prohibits smoking inside restaurants and anywhere else. youll have to smoke cigarettes on the street, if youre a smoker
ill be in maryland recording during august, or id love to say hi (even though i live a few hours away)
have fun!

I live on LI and I go to the city every now and again, mostly to see shows. Check out Times Square, especially at night. Its amazing with all those lights. The Hard Rock Cafe has great burgers, but the cheapest one is like $10.25. There's this restaurant called Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. and i hear that its a fun place to be and it has really good food. Ive never actually eaten there before though. As for the cops, just dont act suspicious like others have said and you hould be fine.

If you paper bag your drink you won't have too much trouble. The cops can still pour it out and ticket you for that, but they don't. And I wouldn't worry too much about being drunk in public unless you're troublemaking-asshole drunk.
Go to Coronet Pizza on something like 111th and Broadway so you can get a slice of pizza bigger than your head (way bigger than your head). Not the best pizza in NYC but the biggest I've seen. A very good steakhouse is Smith and Wollensky. There's tons of great falafel places all over. Somewhere downtown, I really forgot where, there's a bar replicating the milk bar from Clockwork Orange called the Korova. I'm not sure I'd recommend it aside from for that bit of cache.
To be honest, I don't have many places in New York City that I like to frequent. The whole island of Manhattan is a yuppie douchebag nightmare and while I enjoy getting drunk at random places with various of my friends, I don't bother to keep track of where we are or where we're going. Now, if you'd come to Chicago, I could show you something.

I know people in NYC itself and I will definetly meet up with them, right now it's not certain if it's gonna be in september because someone at the female's work is beeing an ass about her free days.
Anyways, thanks for the usefull tips, the coppers seem to have a similair manual like they have over here

I'm definetly going to the hard rock cafe, sure it's a tad fake but it's cool to say you've been there in NYC. right?
If the cheapest burgers are 10.25 then I wonder what a decent beer will cost
I heard Heineken is expensive over there, when I heard that I really had to laugh. It's like 12 dollar for a crate here. (24x0.33cl)

Doubtfully not more than it is here. A 12 PACK(330ml) is $22.99cdn($22usd).

it's marketed as an upscale import here. one of the more expensive beers you can get at a bar besides bars that have really good beer like better imports or craft/micro american beer.
take some pictures! especially if you see some nice pieces.

It's expensive, marketed as an upscale beer, and tastes much worse here.
Let me know when you end up going. I might be in the city in September. We can drink beer and throw the bottles at playgrounds.

dont go to the hard rock cafe.
that shit is for "real" tourists, the fucking fanny-pack, 50-nothing, suburbanites.
plenty of cool digs, diners, vendors, etc. trust whoever-shows-you-around's judgement.
if you could bring a bmx or a road bike, maybe a pair could be provided.
a bicycle is a must<as far as im concerned>, your day to day exploration will easier.
its fun navigating cities on a bike, cover more ground, bob and weave thru traffic and people.

it probably is the "everthing per square mile" in the US.
its just a suggestion. i like riding bikes, its something i would do.
the subway is more than efficient for getting around.

Random fact: If you took the world's population and put 'em together in an area as densely populated as NYC, everyone could fit in the state of Texas.

I mean don't trust anybody who's not from America. Why are you spending so much time in our country instead of your own, anyway? Trying to familiarize yourself with our terrain and discern our weak spots for your impending invasion? HUH? I'M ONTO YOU, CANADIAN!
Good thing we don't have any weak spots. Not even so much as a Toys R' Us is vulnerable.
