Unemployed... got fired Friday simply because they didn't want a part-time dishwasher. They fired me without notice, and replaced me the very next day. Pretty shitty.

I'm an accountant. In about six months' time I'll be an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales and be allowed to use the letters ACA after my name.
I then plan to become a chartered tax adviser after sitting more exams next year. I'll then be able to add CTA after my name as well.

Currently housewife with delusions of grandeur.
I think my favorite job was as a Child Care Worker and therapist when the kids used to come in the kitchen at the Treatment Center and I'd teach them cooking skills and just be there to share in their experiences. We both learned a lot from each other and the pay wasn't bad either.

PhD student. Teach Maths & Stats at a private college, teach Introductory and Advanced psych courses at University where I study, trying (and probably succeeding) to get research institute job in near future. Near future likelihood: postdoctoral research, paid sodomite or 2nd Amendment groupie.

Is it also a requirement over there to find a 'university approved' place for postdoctoral research?
It's a real bitch over here, I had two offers but both where denied by my lector.

Lately I've been housepainting. In the coming year or so it's looking like I might be getting a paying, film-related job, but that depends on the finances.

Yes of course. Postdoctoral research is almost inevitably with a uni faculty or research institute. I don't know what a lector is, and if one ever denied me anything, I would carve their eyes out. Here, a postdoc is just a job with a contract like any other.

The professor that guides you after uni.
Over here you get your bachelor title after finishing college, the bachelor is titled 'BCR.'
After College-HBO you can attend university for four years, or better said, a master's study. It will give you a masters title. (master of art, science, etc)
The masters title is the new way of doing it over here, we had the 'Drs.' title for ages, which is 'Doctorandus.' After this you can go on to be a 'promovendi' or better said, promote on your research for four years. (postdoc) If you succeed, you can call yourself a 'Dr.' or Doctor..
Hope that makes any sense, we've been busy with integration into the international system, it's probably not all the same stuff you're used too but I bet the steps are pretty similair?
It doesn't pay all too well to have a postdoc contract here, it also takes 4 years. I'm considering it though but first I'll finish my (2nd) master.

That all sounds confusing. Here, you get a PhD, you do some postdoctoral research. It doesn't pay well either. It's not supposed to, it's supposed to teach you how to research and get you published a lot.

I'm in the Marine Corps Reserves.
I work for the city of Blacksburg doing various outdoor jobs that need doing.
And i go to school full time. At least during the school semesters, i'm not taking summer classes. thank god it would have been a SERIOUS waste of money.

What certs did you need to get that job. I plan on having A+, Net+, and MPC by the end of august.
I think we might be in the same boat as I'm going to get a IT job for a year untill I have money to fly my ass to europe, go to Wakken and try and stay over there.

I'm going to do something similar to that. I'm going to go to a tech school and get my degree in some type of computer career. Most likely software engineering or networking. Then find me a job and go to a college in Europe(probably Belgium) and continue until I get my masters in that field.

Still might, I just wasnt ready to go to school, and after a year be put in a career that i will most likely be doing for the rest of my life, needed to dick around and be young. Now I'm pretty much dead set on getting to Europe, seeing what other cultures has to offer as I'm really not down with capitalism.
I just started this computer thing as quick way to get a job to finance my escape, but ideally, i'd like to save up money, travel Europe, come back go to luthiery school, and end up living somewhere in an Earthship ( http://www.earthship.net/) building custom guitars making enough to get by. But fuck, that's a long time away.

None. There are people that know absolutely nothing about computers and get launched into this job where you're force fed information about networks as you require it to resolve a customer's issue. I'm basically getting on the job training until I don't have to ask questions anymore.
But if you have computer literacy then you definitely have a hiring advantage. I was trying to get out of stocking groceries at Wal-Mart, so I read some books on interviewing and occupations that don't require degrees, and I applied for this. I'm studying A+ right now ( If you keep an eye on the Computer thread I've been popping up there lately ), and when I move I'm planning to have that and at least Net+ under my belt. You'll do very well with those certs.
One thing that's awesome about this job is how I just got paid to post this message.

Nice. Sounds like a great job. Pretty easy too. Next year our school will be offering a class that will teach all of the stuff in the A+ book and by the end of the course we will have our certificate in it. So I'm looking forward to that.
Why would your job pay you for posting?

I troubleshoot over the phone all day. I'm talking to a customer right now and I'm having him ping his gateway. Now I'm having to send a technician out to his house. To do it I have to be on a computer with internet access all day.
Any job that lets you use the internet as much as you like to kicks ass. I do all of the bs-ing I do at home on the net here ( surfing here, reading articles ) and just take calls as they come. I just can't pull up porn or gore-centric entertainment.
But yeah, DEAD, we're pretty much in the same boat ... Getting into computers to finance other pursuits. Its fun though.

Well, in the land of Canada...you move to Alberta and become a welder you can make some serious cash.
"the annual salary in 2005 for a welder ranged from C$20,400 to C$170,300"
http://www.guardianabroad.co.uk/lifestyle/article/184
I'm sure it's even more now.
Edit - $19,128.90US - $159,688.78US

Easy work? It can't be that "easy" for such good pay. Almost seems too good to be true... Anyways, I was told that good math skills are required to be in the welding field, and my math sucks cock. So I'm kinda worried about that

I think that's like 20 or so grand a year. Not bad at all as a starting salary.
I don't have a job, but I could see myself doing something similar to what JH is doing, or working a trade like welding. Ideally I'd want to end up working for a videogame developer, or at least in some sort of creative job.

Depending on where you are, $10 an hour can be quite a bit. I've never received that for a manual job.

Until you consider taxes....
I have no clue what I want to do with my life. I definately don't want to work for a corporation or in the service industry. I'll probably end up taking out a huge loan with a couple of people and booking it to mexico.

My friend doesn't even know basic arithmetic nor can he read. So I don't think math is a factor. Maybe just some common sense during the angles.
I think that he started off making $15 an hour.

He is dyslexic. I'm being 100% honest. All of his friends usually have to help him out so that he doesn't get the wrong thing but aside from those two flaws he is a smart guy.

Well, it's like playing something by ear or knowing how to read and play with written music. Some people just have a natural talent for certain things.
If I knew how to weld my husband would be having fits cuz I'd have some large metal sculptures in my yard made from found objects. I saw a metal praying mantis in someone's yard about 8 feet tall. It was cool as heck.

dude, it isnt a simple as that.
there are many different kinds of welders, occupationally and the the actual equipment you use<mig, tig, stick, arc, etc> and also the enviroments you have to work in......like 20 stories up in the exposed beams of a soon-to-be office building in the middle of winter.
this is not to mention that welders usually have strong construction backgrounds<building/repairing modern structures like warehouses,malls,etc>.......mechanical backgrounds<building/repairing large equipment such as, for example.....carnival/amusement park rides or custom made automotive parts>
welding is moreso a "means" for something a little more specific, like if you work with boats..........or are into custom motorcycle parts............or if you work for 6 flags............or if you make art/sculpture out of metal.

Yeah dude, I have the long hair/beard problem. I work at a record store for peanuts (gas money, sometimes lunch money too). Other than that I never get calls back from anywhere. Besides, you're not very metal if you have a job! haha.

Art teacher.
Req - At a fast food place they would give you a hat/hair net once you are hired...he definitely doesn't want to wear a hat for a job interview.

Sweet, yeah they are plenty of jobs available in that field. Good choice indeed, maybe you should make a thread (or find an old thread) to show your art work.

for now, i'll just post this here. i dont think there are many members who do this, so the thread would just die, or die again. anyway. this has the front, neck tie, and back label. for those who dont know, mead is honey wine... so the BEE DOES MAKE SENSE. a few classmates said "WUT DOZ A BEE HAV 2 DOES WIT WINE... LOL".
Mead Label
EDIT: the neck ties runes read "a toast of honey to the mighty chosen ones". a very appropriate lyric, of mine.

Graphic Design is so sort of lame imo, so much of it is just visual brainwashing of consumers, would bother me as a career.

maybe you should consider what you are saying. every food, drink and personal product requires a label. in fact there is no more "visual brainwashing" than there isnt. im looking at a beer label, 2 feet from me, and dont know what you are talking about. posters? magazine ads? for one thing, when a specific product is assigned to a person, to make it look good, and desireable, after that, it is up to that person, how it comes out.
almost every single cd, released, has hours of graphic design put into it. newspapers are pieced together by graphic designers. every logo for every company was made by graphic designers. i love making logos. logos are never meant to brainwash, but to provide a simple, straigtforward, and memorable image/shape. from nike, or quicksilver to addidas. all in all, if you suddenly go out and buy nike shoes, after seing the checkmark, on tv, and want to claim youve been "brainwashed", ...well, need i even attempt to tell you whats wrong with that?
edit: oh, if someone wouldnt like the job of making a tour poster/shirt/art, for their favorite band(s) (when possible of coarse), i guess thats probably just because they suck at it.

Calm down and stop trying to stretch my logic.
My point is, modern marketing for big corporations is all based in subliminal messages. I understand you need to label products but it's now to the point where there is pretty much a science to it, you know this color will induce hunger, etc. That's why pretty much every fast food joint uses red and yellow.
And why are you telling me what graphic designers do? I know what they do, my roommate was going to be one until he realized what a toolbag career it is and decided to do something worthwhile with his artistic ability. (OH SNAP THIS IS GETTING OUT OF HAND)
btw, IMO, so don't get all bitch-fest with me.

bitch-fest? i wasnt, at any point, bitching. i was explaining how i see it. why did i tell you what they do? because while you were labeling it as brainwashing, you forgot to mention the large portion of it that has nothing to do with that.
and now, suddenly your point is only concerning big corperations? funny how that became your "point" after i explained a few of the other, better areas of the career . i dont plan on ever working for a "visually hypnotising, big (fast food) corperation." (as specified, by yourself). so dont go all bitch-fest about how you dont like them.

one of my dream jobs is to paint cd covers, i love the art work by Necrolord! one of my favourites is the cover to Dissections "where dead angels lie", it is just fantastic!
other favourites are maiden covers. i love "killers".

guitar building sounds sweet. i remember seeing your pic of one you made, but you said it came out too small? oh well, you get better, and you can make some awesome guitars, im sure!
you know, you can draw on paper, and scan it into computers . also, there are these pads you can use, with various computer programs, where you draw it by hand, on the pad, and it comes out on the screen. im also in these coarses to learn how to make video/cartoon out of illustrations. in this coarse, the photography class was very fun too, and it incorperated graphic design. one of my favorite assignments was to take a picture of a product, you own, and make it into a magazine ad. ive posted it before, but if you missed it:
Korg
but i hope that didnt hypnotize anyone...
@jetblack: yes, i also hope to work with professional album covers, although i cant paint very well.

and now, suddenly your point is only concerning big corperations? funny how that became your "point" after i explained a few of the other, better areas of the career . i dont plan on ever working for a "visually hypnotising, big (fast food) corperation." (as specified, by yourself). so dont go all bitch-fest about how you dont like them.

Get is future tense, meaning I knew what kind of reaction I was going to get from you. Every time I've had to encounter you on these boards you're a big blubbery bitch, so stop it.
STOP TAKING EVERYTHING SO FUCKING LITERAL. If I cared to clear up what I was trying to get across it would probably take 4 days of back and forth posting with you getting all progessively more woman-like after each post, so whatever, go make labels, I'm sure I'm missing out on all the worthless art there is to be had in the Nike archive.

HAHA! nice way to abruptly lose any discussion you tried to bring forth, here. so you you try and sway from it by calling me "womanlike" by owning your sorry ass. how about this, im a literal guy. dont like it? then shut up, and dont talk to me. problem solved?
if not, there is some sort of ignore button, for avoiding these encounters you seem to be so distraught by.

yeah i know about that, my dad has been a graphic designer all of his life, so ive seen the boring computer stuff he had to do for years lol, then again, he worked for disney, doing most of theys vhs and dvd covers posters and shit, so he had to use existing pictures mostly i guess, seemed realy boring to me anyway lol. also in school we usualy drew things on paper, then i left the school for 4 or 5 years cuz i wanted to work for a while, then when i got back the ins chool, the whole drawing stuff was gone, nothin but computers, ive been in school for 40 miniutes that year lol, right after i heard there was nomore actual drawing involved i quited the school lol.

haha. thats awesome, about your dad. i would love that job. i know how it could feel boring, but to me, its so interesting, i dont get bored. and yes, using existing pictures happens often, especially in disney and others alike. even that way, it is fun for me, because then i can focus more on the layout, rather than recreating character illustrations (although i have fun with that too!).
even if its, sometimes, boring to work on a project, when its finished, you can look at it and think "wow, it looks good!", and then show people and such. like how you did with your guitar building

I'm still kinda looking into welding, but I kinda got sidetracked into something else that I'd really like to do. I was talking to my dads friend who is a corrections officer at the local prison, he said the requirements aren't too stiff, all you need is a grade 12 education. He said they would accept me without hesitation because I have a big upper body (broad shoulders, big chest) and I work out alot.
Not to mention that the money is fucking killer
So if they do accept me, I think I've found my career.

Good luck John, feeling confident?
I´m about to start a PhD in organic chemistry. Not technically a job, but it´s fully funded so you do get paid and you work full time.

Cheers! Depends which side of the bed I get out of each morning - some days confident, some days absolutely shitting it! I'd be happy with two passes out of three, with one of those being the case study.
