New Nile material
Some of you would have heard the new Nile track available on the internet titled 'Papyrus Containing The Spell To Preserve Its Possessor Against Attacks From He Who Is In The Water'. Also, here in Sydney, they played two new songs live, 'Ithyphallic' (which I liken as the new 'Sarcophagous', but not as good... although it hasn't had time to sink in yet.), and another song whose name escapes me, but I remember it was characterized by both guitars playing a higher harmony in later sections in the piece, in 3/4 time if I remember correctly.
Anyway, what are your expectations for the new stuff? and has it been met so far by what you've heard?
Can they top Annhiliation Of The Wicked and all their previous releases?

It's up somewhere on the Ozzfest website. It's not bad... not exquisite either, but I'll probably pick up the album at one point or another when it's released.

Didn't really progress much from their last album. Sounds the same as their other work. I'll pass.

I like the fact they were slower and more well thought out on AoTW, but from the samples I've heard this album will be badass.

Personally I'd rather have more slow parts to give a bit more variety in Nile's music. Instead of the same overdone technical for technical's sake parts.

Yeah, I've always found Nile to be at their strongest in those slower, crunchy numbers like Sarcophagus and Unas Slayer of the Gods. I'd like to see more of that (which isn't to say I don't love their fast songs, either).

lolll, Bah, I personnally, dont see a lot of variety in their music, they are ithyphallic, and this is very original, so i cant complain about slow parts or ''variety's less''

Ask him if he keeps current with the death metal scene, and if he does, what are a few of his favorite up-and-coming bands. I'm curious to know.

ask him if he intends to put some more stuff like saurian meditation, or if there will be tons of egyptian sample-ish stuff on the album (which was lacking on AotW)

I'm normally quick to complain against lack of originality in any music, but this shit is great! I can hear them branching back away from Annihilation Of The Wicked, as good as it was, it was too straight-forward for Nile, too much time bleeding their trademarks in overly simplistic ways. But this is back on the path of interesting. Will be buying when it is released three days after my birthday.

Ask Karl how long he thinks he can keep doing the egyption thing for, and also what he thinks of naysayers to the egyption sound on every album.

Yes he is working on a new solo album to follow up Saurian too.

I'm not against the Egyptian theme/sound. I tottally dig it. I love his solo work as well. I just don't like how the Egyptian themed music gets buried under some pointlessly technical riffage. That's just my oppinion tho. That's my one problem with Nile (besides the fact they blow live) is the songs kind of start to sound the same after a while due to cramming so much stuff in. I have In Their Darkened Shrines and I really liked the first 3 songs and the instrumentals and the slow doom songs. But other than that I just really felt bored while listening to it. I also got AOTW which I liked about 2 or 3 songs.
I just think their music needs more variety in the sound but still staying within the Egyptian themes.

I think you are missing the point. They aren't trying to be technical, it's simply trying to play something to fit the 256 BPM and fairly insane percussion they often have going.
I would be celebrating as well, Nile are one of the most skilled, interesting and diverse of the genre. I'm scared to think who you find more diverse/listeable/less boring.

i really do hope nile keep their egyptian themes going, and the naysayers can have their opinion, but to me it is refreshing to hear the gongs in the middle of songs, and generally i like the sounds of arabic-ish scales. i don;t wan't them to be just another DM band

The Egyptian sound IS Nile. If they decided to do something else it might as well be a different band.

Actually Necronomicon were the first DM band with Egyptian themes and heavy use of middle eastern scales in their music, they date back to the mid early 90's before Nile put their demo out they already had their debut out. Not as fast, technical or fun as Nile but it's still pretty cool.
Therion and Melechesh make heavy use of middle Eastern scales in their music, in fact I'd say Melechesh use them far more intensely, and occasionally both have some Egyptian themes in some of their lyrics.
Btw fans of Nile in particular fans of ITDS and BSOV should really really get Mithras' "Forever Advancing... Legions", fucking awesome, I heavily enjoy listening it in conjunction with BSOV and ITDS. The other newer two are great but a little less brutal and more psychodelic and atmospheric, along the likes of FFtF era Morbid Angel.

Yeah there are many songs where the whole Egyptian melody is way more subtle, if not completely non-existent. Like the song Whisper in the Ear of the Dead, if weren't for the lyrics or bandname you'd never think it had to do with Egyptian themes. Definitely a good slab of old fashioned death metal influence there. I see influences from Autopsy and Gorefest to Morbid Angel to fuckin Deeds of Flesh. The same goes for many other songs. YOU ARE WRONG if you disagree.

I tottally agree I love their doomy songs. I Whisper In The Ear Of The Dead is an awsome track. Hell, Karl Saunders even addmited he stole a Candlemass riff in one of the songs.

incorrect. every single riff they wrote has 100 percent over the top egyptian scale. i know this for a fact, karl sanders told me.

Egyptian scale itself is actually 1 2 4 5 b7, AKA Pentatonic Ambiguous/Neutral, which lacks a third or the '1 b2 3 4' or '1 b2 b3 b4' at any position to give that kinda charactered diminished sound we relate to Egyptian music, as well as other Eastern music. The lead in the riff at 1:30 in Lashed To The Slave Stick actually sounds more Persian or just chromatic to this ear than 'Egyptian'.
The outro' to Invocation To Siditious Heresy is also full-on Natural Minor, with diatonic thirds.

I think Soeru was just refering to style rather than an actual riff.

AoTW made me yawn and had that new overdone production with no character at all, the new song is a big "meh". Though I did like the previous albums.

Yeah it leaked, I'm waiting til July though, I'm buying it because I don't want the disappointment of getting a shitty quality rip like the new Behemoth or Immo, which are actually better on the real CD.

the new album sounds pretty good to me. some of the lyrics are kinda annoying "after god destroys, so he creates. after god creates, so he destroys" repeat X 19302489023904

It's growing on me.
Lots of doomy parts....which totally suck.
The faster songs/parts are rad though.

Indeed. I rather more doom than the stupidly technical and fast parts.

Well, then I guess you will both like it.
I think their faster stuff is much better.
"Sarcophagus" is their only good slow song. Everything else bores me.

Usaar Matt Re is one of the slowest Nile songs and also one of the best...

Yeah, I think I like Nile much more because of those slow doom-ish parts rather than those fast, i-want-to-be-so-technical parts.

Seriously, their doomish stuff is crap. Slow, boring power chord progressions with "epic" Egyptian shit over it. You can't headbang to it cause it's too slow, you can't fall asleep to it cause it's too heavy, and you can't enjoy it because, well, it sucks. What's to like about it?
You people are weird.

Cause some of us are DooM fans and enjoy the atmosphere of it.
I personally can sit through an entire Wormphlegm EP with the song clocking in at 32 minutes and there are about 5 power chords in the song played slow as fuck. But I get so bored sitting through a Nile album unless it has some DooM parts.
Not all music is about headbanging.

i just finished the interview. It will be online next week so i will post a link then.
we talked about the new record, George Kollias, their music (basicly i asked Infinity's question, infinity: you still suck balls but you just asked a good question), the Ozzfest (he explicitly says its NOT a metal festival, haha) and Amsterdam.

Not really the new Nerlich was fucking astounding and they have another one coming out this year (2 albums in one year who would have thunk it), and I imagine that one will shred my asshole with riffage as well

I was mostly referring to the more well known bands... The new Immo, Behemoth, and now Nile have all been very disappointing. One good album doesn't really make it a good year either.
I haven't heard that album but I'll check it out.

VERY GOOD point. I hate it when dudes are like everything needs to super fast and heavy. Get over it the bands that play that kind of music usually get old after a while.
