George Carlin. Lenny Bruce. Sam Kinnison. Billy Connolly. David Cross. Lewis Black. Tom Lehrer (if he counts). Bill Bailey. Eddie Izzard. Recently heard Doug Stanhope, who holds promise.
The only black comedian I've ever liked for more than 20 seconds is Richard Pryor, who is about 40 times funnier than all the others put together.

David Cross. I fucking love stand-up comedy. It doesn't even have to be great, give me some decent stand-up and I'll enjoy it. Bill Hicks, Mitch Hedberg, Dave Chappelle, Dave Attell, Lewis Black... those are just guys who are fresh off the top of my head, nobody you haven't heard of. I'd be more fresh if I had cable right now.

Ricky Gervais is quite possibly the funniest man I have ever seen.
Other notables include Steve Coogan, Jimmy Carr, Frankie Boyle, Bill Bailey, Ross Noble, Tommy Cooper, Les Dawson and Peter Kay.
Channel Four recently compiled a list of the top 100 standups and you can find it here.

Mitch Hedburg has always been my favorite. I wish I could hear new material....
Also Lewis Black, David Cross, Daniel Tosh, Patton Oswald and everyone else from The Comedians of Comedy Tour.

I have lots of Comedy Central episodes here... The ones I like best are:
Pablo Francisco (the voices!)
Mitch Hedberg (the oneliners!)
Jeremy Hotz
Adam Ferrara (again, great voices)
Nick DiPaulo (not sure about first name)
Bill Burr
Gabriel Iglesias
And of course: Chris Rock.

you guys probably hate this kid, Demetri Martin
i just think a lot of his jokes are funny.
"One of my friends has a stutter and a lot of people think that's a bad thing, but to me that's just like starting certain words with a drum roll. That's not an impediment, that's suspense!"
"Canoe + waterfall = I don't go camping anymore."
"I think it's interesting that 'cologne' rhymes with 'alone'
"The digital camera is a great invention because it allows us to reminisce. Instantly."
he reminds me of Tom Green, when he says these. and the jokes are much better heard/seen, than read, due to the obvious lack of charisma, in just reading.

The only thing I dislike about Cross and Hicks is that they are sooooo fucking liberal, but they are funny as shit and make some good points.

Exactly. Everytime he does that de-de-de bullshit, that dead horse becomes more of a greasey spot.
Demetri Martin is also one of my favorites. I love humor that you never think of.

De-de-de? You mean the imitation of the retard working at the fastfood place? Haha, that's a great one, I think. But he's been accused of stealing jokes for some time now, which is not that cool. You can find some of those face-to-face discussions on the net.
Dave Attell is great - love all his porn- and penisjokes.
Some other good comedians:
Hugh Fink, Louis Ramey, Tom Papa, Carlos Alazraqui, Ardal Ohanlon, Jim David.

True. Comedians are usually the funniest when they parody rednecks and George "screw diplomacy" Bush.

The only comedian's name I bother to remember, that I find funny, is Dave Chappelle, however there are loads of comedians that I've heard and found funny.
On that note, I have never heard a funny female comedian, anybody know of one?

Phyllis Diller, Carol Burnette, Lily Tomlin, Gilda Radner ("Let's Talk Dirty to the Animals"), Ellen Degeneres.
My mom had landscaping done recently by a Mexican and his brother. I told one of my friends it was Carlos Mencia. He thought that was a riot. I thought it was a riot when my mom asked him if his name was Italian. He said "no way, they are dogs!" I cracked up. He's a pretty amusing person.
fbs snookums, you said Tom Lehrer. I <3 U.
CARLIN WAS COOL BEFORE YOU GUYS WERE BORN! Anyone seen the Hippy Dippy Weather Man he used to do?

am i the only one that hates it when comedians base nearly all of their material on politics or race? i mean, i really dont care about their views, on the matter, and some of them seem to think that the micraphone is their ticket to telling everybody how they feel about these things... lame. i guess it may be funny, at times, but that may just be the way they present it, or word it. still, i hate those topics, in comedy.

Other people that have popped into mind that I like a whole lot are Kevin Nealon and Bob Saget. Yeah, that's right. Bob FUCKING Saget. Maybe it's just hearing Danny Tanner drop F bombs, but he made me laugh.

People regard Margaret Cho highly, although I don't really get into her act (I'm guessing David Cross doesn't, either). Some people like Cathy Griffin, but there's only so much I can take of an act revolving around what an asshole Ryan Seacrest is.
Laura Kightlinger is very good (she also writes for TV shows, most notably Will and Grace). Janeane Garofalo is better and I can only think of three celebrities I want to fuck more, even if all my friends think she's ugly.

Comedians who I think are truly great:
Bill Hicks (the greatest ever.)
Sam Kinison
Richard Pryor
George Carlin
Andrew Dice Clay (WAY more than meets the eye. Not many people really 'get' his act)
Mitch Hedberg
Jackie Mason
Dave Atell
Gilbert Gottfried (his old standup is fucking hilarious)
Jim Carrey (see above)
Steve Martin (see above)
Rodney Dangerfield
Richard Lewis
Steven Wright
Denis Leary (even though he ripped off alot of material from Bill Hicks.)
Lenny Bruce, without whom stand up would have never been possible the way it is today.
Comedians who I think are overrated and fucking terrible:
Kevin James (you're fat, we get it.)
Dennis Miller (the 'non-comic' comic.)
Dane Cook (I laugh at him, not with him.)
Jay Leno (wasn't even funny when he wrote his own jokes.)
Tim Allen (see above.)
Carlos Mencia (isn't even Mexican.)
Rosanne (Sandra Burnheart, Brette Butler, hell, any female comic I've seen is miles better than her.)
Most modern standup is without balls anyway.
Chris, you're not the only one who thinks Janeane Garofalo is hot. Suprisingly enough, I've been known to go for 'ugly chicks' too... whatever.

I could care less what there preferance is. I just can't stand president bashing. With Cross it's Bush; with Hicks it was Reagan.

I've seen many of the greats listed here. George Carlin, Steven Wright, Dave Chapelle etc... Don't think anybody mentioned Don Rickles yet, wtf??? He's fucking awesome! But anyways, I like comedians that most people have never heard of, there are some great ones out there that don't get much publicity. Here are a few of my "underground" favourites on YouTube.
Fraser Young (09:06) Hilarious comedian from Toronto
Ryan Belleville (02:44) Great Canadian humor
I'm also surprised that nobody has mentioned Russell Peters yet That guy is the fuckin' bomb

You can hold dual citizenship ESPECIALLY with Canada. Apparently its a pretty set in stone thing from what i hear. (from this canadian guy i know)
Also i finally remmebered what that crank yankers guys name was who is hilarious as SHIT at stand up.
Jim Florentine
That man is such a fucking smart ass its ridiculous. Apparently he is/ or has put out a cd of all his terrorizing of telemarketers and i bet its funny. I've heard a few of his stuff before.

nobody put eddie murphy ... or coke era robin williams !! ... i guess it's dated but that was my favorite stuff growing up.
now i like david cross, and hicks and carlin in retrospect.

Carrey's definitely got American citizenship, but as mentioned that doesn't mean he had to renounce his Canadian citizenship, though it should. Was it Jim Carrey who became an American citizen in front of an all-Canadian audience on the Conan O'Brien show? I think so. That was pretty funny.
Dane Cook's just somebody you could meet at a frat house, recycling the jokes of other people with manic energy and some charm, and find pretty funny. What works for him really has nothing to do with standup. He's done a pretty good job with it, but it means he's one of the only 'standup' comedians open to that 'You're not that funny, I know a guy at work who's way funnier than you' saw.

Yes.
That was a pretty lame joke. Considering i don't even think Jerry Lewis was popular at all during that time frame.

I'd think less of a guitarist if they were stealing riffs and not giving credit. Sure, they may be able to play them, but plagiarism is not a characteristic you want to have as an artist. Having a writer create jokes for you is one thing, that's a collaborative relationship and many comics have those, but jokejacking ( just made that up ) would be different.

He might be nothing, but he's right. Only FBS can make jokes.
Getting into the ethics of stealing jokes has to do with whether or not you consider standup a creative venture. If you think these people are artists offering you something, then it matters. If you don't, then it doesn't. For me it varies from comic to comic, and, like I said, I consider Dane Cook to be an elevated version of the dude I meet at drunken events who repeats and makes up jokes and is funny based mostly on energy, so I care less about the fact that he steals jokes than about the fact that I know people in real life who do what he does about as well. But I don't know anybody who does anything like, say, George Carlin or David Cross.
On the other hand, it's hard to steal jokes when nobody really tells them anymore.

The interesting thing is that outside of the internet, I'm like a less hyper Dane Cook. I hear about once a week that I should get into comedy, and while it's a great ego stroke, I know I couldn't do that because about 15% of my jokes are either borrowed or stolen material from real comedians who are a lot funnier than I am. So hooray for me, because apparently, I have more work ethic than either Dane Cook or Carlos Mencia. There are a few people on this forum that are much funnier than I am, but I can see they are interested in that line of work.
I noticed the internet has a way of really showcasing only one or two sides of a person's personality and amplifying them. Thusly, certain people are very fucking annoying. I'd bet most of the people here are pretty cool in real life. Except, of course, for Requiem. He's a total colostomy bag.

eddie murphy delerious and raw are really good. as far as natural comedic talent, eddie murphy was one of the best.
old richard pryor is really good too, dont know which live appearences. i gotta see more of his stuff, ive just recently been browsing the net for old stuff.
george carlin, all 90's material, he did like 5 or 6 HBO shows, all amazing.......but only that decade, ive seen some 70's stuff and the guy is so wasted, coked up thats its too wierd to watch. i got a tape from the 80s "live on campus".........horrible.
carlin's been around for like 40 years, the dudes in his 70's.........pretty amazing career.
bill hicks, everything the dude did ruled, another natural comedian who could break thru prepared material.
the mitch hedberg stuff ive seen is good, no swears, no completely offending subject matter, no toilet humor........very unorthodox style, very hard to pull off convincingly.
one thing, he was really stiff. sometimes he appeared to be holding the mic stand for dear life, you could see the anxiety sometimes.
andy kaufman. this dude is probably the most intriguing comedian ever, he did shit noone would ever dare to. he beats out even the "dark lord" lenny bruce.
lenny bruce's stuff is really dated for me, i understand for his time, noone was doing dirty material, absurdly racist material, drug humor on a mainstream level, on a television variety show level...............but i just dont really find his stuff that good............its like listening to the first slayer album..............for its time i see that its influencial and innovative.........but i cant dig it.
chris rock is good, he's probably the best at the "black/white" routine that most black comedians do, i like it when the criticism goes both ways...........rather than the tired, cliche, def comedy jam styled "white people are lame, cops suck, i aint had nothin when i was growing up" shtick.
i gotta mention monty python as a comedy troupe, most of thier stuff wasnt even funny, alot of it didnt even make sense......it was just so absurd.........just truely unique.
comedians i dont like.
sam kinison. all he did was that yell shit and railed against gay people........his material was just cruel, bitter, insecure rants.
andrew dice clay.......furthering the east coast italian american stereotype of an aggravatedly insecure, racist, mysoginistic bully.......probably still owns an iroc, still wears Z cavarichi/BUM gear.
denis leary.........literally stole material from hicks, stole the entire persona.
dave chapelle. his show is really good, his stand up sucks.
dana carvey, remember "waynes world" fucking hate this guy.
jim carey....... some of his movies are good tho and he is funny, good at delivery and "physical comedy".........the stand up ive seen is a total bummer, its just not good at all.
rodney dangerfield, this guy does a good job at being a shitty comedian.
kids in the hall.......hate that shit
saturday night live post 70's.......sucked,sucks, will forever suck.
long post, its been awhile

No doubt, hence he and others bank off of physical comedy vice witty intellectual comments. I actually just watched Dane Cooks stand up video the other day and it was hilarious as shit.
And why does everybody and their mother like Mitch Hedburg? I'd say 90% of his act is extremely boring. I'm just not one for an act based off almost knock knock style jokes. (which he probably has in his act as well).

coke-era Dennis Leary is awesome. Trechiotomy (sp?) man!!!
I know he's not standup, but what does everyone think about Jack Black? Have you seen the HBO episodes of Tenacious D? Pure fucking gold.

Ha, Jack Black appeared in an episode of The X-Files (the one where some kid can conduct lightning)...

That's just weird. I read the thread title and the first person I thought of on the forum that tickles my funnybone was FBS. (Although there's a few others that do, too.) And then I see him mentioning Jerry Lewis. He was great in his time. Especially with Dean-o for a straightman.

Clay was portraying a character with the purpose of lampooning that very stereotype. Most of America was too stupid to pick up on something that high concept and merely interpreted it as low brow shock schtick. I've seen enough of his work to know he's not my thing, but I can also see he's not what people say he is.
I also love Kids in the Hall and Monty Python like sex, but to each their own, I suppose.

No, I can't make jokes either. Not even Alex can.
And I want to go on the record as saying that XTRA can only read in a technical sense.

If it were an American site there'd be some freedom (not too much, mind you, because we all know what happens when you get too much of a good thing; plus we're way too clever to trust a forum with so many potential terrorists (foreigners) on it), but it's located in Australia, and was formerly located in Belgium, both notorious lands of oppression.
Hedberg's another case where what he's saying doesn't matter. It's literally all in the delivery and attitude. He played here a while back (I didn't bother to see it, though he promptly died right afterwards), and some douche jumped onstage and told a dumb joke that made nobody laugh. Later on in the night Mitch incorporated the same, still not-funny joke word-for-word and got a huge response. Because it doesn't matter what he's saying anymore than it does what Dane Cook says. That said I don't much like either.

Au contraire, Jerry Lewis - that's exactly what it STARTS becoming funny. You of all people should know that.

I'm liking George Carlin right now.
And as for Hedburg's style, he was a master of delivery and timing, but part of his appeal was his clever personifications ( like having numbers plead for their innocence ) and what I would call a vivid imagination.

I dont' like british comedians because they generally do like.. no shit jokes. And like i've said before, i'm not big on those "clever play on word" almost knock knock style jokes.
Yeah frank caliendo is without a doubt the best impersonator out there. On that standup video his Robert De Niro as the mary Shellys frankenstein monster is hilarious as shit. I roll nearly every time i see that part.

Has anyone ever heard/seen Daniel Tosh's stand up comedy? He had a special on Comedy Central the other night. Some of the funniest shit I've heard in awhile. His jokes are deep and well thought out.
