It wasn't a stunt by Lovecraft. He used it as a plot device to connect a bunch of his stories through a fictional mythology, just like dozens of others of authors have done. Then a lot of authors started using the Necronomicon, and suddenly 'real' versions of it showed up all over, and then it somehow became mixed up with Sumerian mythology, and now a lot of people can't tell the difference. Because a lot of people are stupid and think that because a bunch of horror writers refer to the same thing and this thing seems to remain consistent in all their references, then it MUST be a real thing. They probably also believe in VALIS.
