MetalTabs - legal issues (update)
On the 7th of April 2007 we have received a take-down notice from our ISP. NMPA lawyers contacted them claiming that the tabs on MetalTabs.com infringe upon their copyright and demanding to remove the tabs. We complied to avoid being sued.
Shortly after the tabs were taken down, we started directly contacting bands and their labels, asking for their permission to post tablature. Our attempt to legalise the tabs is very successful so far. The vast majority of bands and labels that replied gave us their permission. Many of them complimented the work we are doing and wished best of luck with the website.
In the coming weeks we will re-open MetalTabs. We will not have as many tabs as we used to have but 100% of them will be legal and the number of tabs will increase as we receive more replies from bands and labels.
Thank you for your continuing support and patience!

I will post that a bit later. In fact to prevent future legal issues I'm going to have this information openly available on the website.

Excellent. Good luck with all this jazz. One question though, say for an Earache records band, do you mail a letter to each and every band on the record label or just 1 directly to the label?

This really depends. Some bands have deals with labels and and don't have publishing rights of their own work. Some labels don't care about the tabs and tell us to ask the bands.
I normally start with bands but also contacted a few labels to see their reaction.

You suck! Just kidding. Good job. You rule.
Has the response been more positive from the 'bigger' bands/labels or the smaller ones? Just wondering.

Knowing roadrunner and the bands they have signed, probably not well. Stupid sellout cocksuckers.
This is another good thing, contacting the bands and stuff; we weed out the bad fruit from the patch.

I just thought of something, why don't you guys just set up an account-login kind of system for downloading tabs at MT? They can't prove you have tabs up for download unless they sign up for it, which should be controlled and moderated by the mods and admns here, and you could put up a disclaimer like "If you work for any association blabla you are not allowed to register".
I've seen this done on a few emulation-videogame sites with great success.

That's a brilliant idea too, kinda hard to put up a torrent for every single tab though, cuz the torrent files would be bigger than the tabs themselves! There must be a way to loophole this shit...

Could work. But then there would be a lot useless accounts, because they'd use it only to download tabs.
Edit: Btw, what if there is a band that has been on two or more labels? And what if the band has disbanded?

I just hope the tabs are back up soon. Metaltabs is by far the best website for accruate metal tabs. I hope the Slayer tabs won't be taken off - that would be a disaster but what can you do..........
Anyway, keep up the good work. Much appreciated.

I can only second that. Great work! Even If this site loses some tabs its still the best tabsite for metal. I have visited this site since 3 years and there is NO SITE OUT THERE LIKE THIS ONE, METALTABS IS THE BEST!!!!
BIG RESPECT!
And if we lose tabs at least we still have the forum where we can discus scales, arpeggio's, gear and so on. So even if there were no tabs left I still would come here. lol

Great job first of all.
I have some questions
1.) What about bands that are broken up like Repulsion, Brutal Truth, Impetigo and Rigor Mortis and stuff are their tabs still allowed here?
2.) If roadrunner is being dick about their bands does that include Obituary? Cause I really want that Cause Of Death solo!

Outstanding, Nomad! You could have easily just washed your hands of the whole situation but didn't, and that means plenty to us. The bands that aren't readmitted into MT undoubtedly have thousands of tabs elsewhere on the net anyway, so there's basically nothing lost here I'm thinking.

Shit! That means - no Dream Theater TABs

The tabs I have permissions for are online. You can check the status here.
More tabs will become available as I send requests to the bands and labels and receive their permissions.

How will you get permission from bands that aren't together anymore?
EDIT: I'm said to see that Gorgoroth doesn't want their tabs on MT.
I couldn't give a shit about Lacuna Coil or Impaled Nazarene.

I will just try to reach ex-members or their ex-label.
Gorgoroth said they don't want to be imitated. That's why they never published their lyrics or tabs.

You know, Alex Webster is really really easy to get in contact with over at the official cannibal corpse site's forum. Considering how many CC tabs we used to have here why not contact him? (in case you didn't figure it out, I want to learn a few old CC songs )

What elitist wankers!!!
Hey Skyclad granted permission Well that's one tab I have up!! Only another 280 odd to go...but it's a start. Great work Nomad, thanks again for all you are doing for us!!
No hang on I see Agent Steel say yes hurrah!
At least we get to see which bands or labels are really grass roots and which ones are multinational money harvestors.
Nomad maybe you should print some more of the replies and reasons some artists said no, especially if they're lame or funny i.e. Gorgoroth

Frankly, I think Gorgoroth's reason is about the only reasonable one I've heard for not wanting tabs posted online..
Elitism is simply the rejection of mediocrity. It's why we have music that doesn't suck.

So when they're not in prison for sexual assault/alleged rape and kidnap and torture they are pushing the boundaries of mediocrity by creating music that doesn't suck, ok I get it. I mean breaking the law is such an un-cliched rock and roll thing to do! And naming yourself after a place in a fantasy story is sooo original
It's a lame excuse that they probably conjured up because they wanted to appear uber cool, what with coming from Norway they have this 'grim' pretentious facade to up hold.

Those are the bands that sent us official tabs.
Defeated Sanity
Spawn Of Possession
Goratory
Vile
Capharnaum
Emeth
Gorod
Beheaded
Decrepit Birth
Odious Mortem
Necrophagist
I already asked Alex about CC tabs and he was like. "Oh, of course man, its really cool to have people learning our songs"
He did even help us figuring out "Murder Worship".

Nomad,
Cheers to the work you're putting towards to keep metaltabs alive. I hope all bands see the good in what metaltabs is all about. Good Luck!

They formed in 1992, it's not like they're some new upstart band trying to cash in on the oldschool spirit. I'm not terribly fond of them, but I don't think not wanting to share their songs is particularly unreasonable if they're doing it for artistic reasons rather than for money.
This is all off-topic, at any rate..
