Most technical band?
What band is best with their instruments, better than the rest?

Ok, for a real answer, the most technical band I have ever heard in my life is Portal. But since I know you won't look at them, some others are -
Psyopus
Braindrill
Cynic

Mortician? tech? oh dear
I'd say Anomalous, Psyopus, Domination through impurity and maybe Martyr? because the bassist actually plays interesting and audible riffs.

Spawn of Possession are probably the techy death metal band with the wackiest guitar riffs ever.
Drum and bass-wise I'd say Atheist and Gorguts are some of the most impressive in metal.

Some technical bands...
Decapitated
Necrophagist
Psycroptic
Spawn Of Possession
The Faceless
Sleep Terror
Martyr
Beneath The Massacre
Not sure who I'd consider the best... they're all good.

i wouldn't say the most technical is necessarily the best band with their instruments, cause theres more to music than playing somethin really difficult if it sounds like shait.
but i'd say psyopus or sleep terror maybe.

Behold... The Arctopus, Cynic, Martyr and Spiral Architect. Meshuggah also get points from me for technicality.
Cynic are immense, as difficult as their stuff is, live, they are so calm, they are like Holdsworth in that they don't need to "focus" on the instrument; they don't really have a 'guitar mode'. They don't have a comfort zone mentality.
Martyr receive high technicality scores because their there stuff can only really be played if one is using the best way possible to play it, economy of motion and stuff like that.
I chose Meshuggah because they are super-tight players.

Some technical thrash, but obviously not as technical as the rest of the bands mentioned.

Oh yeah Watchtower, crazy shit! I'm a big fan of the band, I think they have all their albums up for free download on their site nowadays? I know some techy thrash band does, I think it was them.

People seem to forget how fucking hard their shit is to play from Whisper Supremacy onward. They're definitely up there. For my money still, Spawn of Possession is the craziest shit on the planet. I'm gonna have to check out Psyopus though.

LOLOLOLOLOLl0l0l YOU ARE FUCKING STUPID!
And it's Cloacal Kiss!
Last time I checked, The Number 12 Looks like You and From A Second Story Wondow were faggot ass motherfucker metalcore/fagcore acts. Hardly technical you dumbass. I can't believe you didn't suck BTM's dick in this post.
Thanks for fulfilling your 'duty'
Anyway, fucking hell this thread has been done so many fucking times, and every time an abundance of stupidity ensues. Thank you Inafag.
Psyopus song to check out on youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GbNunyoICfE
Off their old album, way better than new one IMO. Ion Dissonance aren't too dissimilar, better in my opinion.

I didn't include Beneath the massacre because i think their music is beautiful and very far from chaotic, as i can foresee that i am higher in the evolutionary chain i think i shall ignore the unnecessary parts of your post; that if i might add is basically what 99% of metal heads would say aswell so you know i'm glad you fit in with the crowd and all that.
Also i really couldn't care less how it's spelled because cloacal kiss is a very shit band that sounds like it is trying to disgrace the genre.

I do fear many of the random-named bands mentioned above are just metalcore bands that play a couple of simple discords in a funny pattern. That ain't tech'.

Hmm Simple Dischords in a funny patern .
Dillinger anyone?
Also the bands i mentioned are chaotic tech and the metalcore label doesn't particularly bother me, and you shouldn't let it bother you either.
Check out With Passion which is apparently "metalcore" when really it's more like melodic tech metal. But it's definitely not chaotic hehe....

You could get technical minimalism... Although that's in reference to that movement pioneered by Steve Reich and Terry Riley, I've written a piece arranged for four guitars in that style, and considering that's got some complex polymetrics going on, I would consider it technical minimalism.
Csidering all that technical USUALLY means is "difficult to play", then you could easily get away with technical grindcore. I'm sure there has been some of that already.

Psyopus rejected Derek Roddy as their drummer, and then found a drummer they thought was better than him, so I think that says something about them, that and the 8-fingered tapping lines too.

If you mean hard to play in the physical way, then yeah, grindcore can be and should be technical.
But if you mean in the composition and the showoffy bullshit, then no, it can't be.

Real grindcore: 30 second to a minute and a half long hardcore punk infused blasting songs with the use of powerchords almost exclusively. That's what he was getting at.

Doubtful, he auditioned for the band, and it certainly would have offered him a challenge.
Either way Derek Roddy is an amazing drummer, and if band rejects him because he isn't tech enough for them, they certainly earn their place in this thread.
On that note, Derek Roddy quit Hate Eternal, right? Anyone know what he's doing now a days? As far as drumming.

He's playing for some band that is making more money, forgot the name though, but it's said to be shite.

I would certainly say that Psyopus have the spirit of grind, without ever actually fitting within the confines of the genre. Any band that wants to go as fast as humanly possible must comply with the grind ethic by definition, regardless of how this is attained. For me, Psyopus achieve this but as I say, I wouldn't consider them grind; merely influenced by grind.

Technical minimalism is not only possible, but common (literally from the inception of the genre). I really begin to doubt your credentials when you think that's impossible.

Some of the weird shit I listen to...
Here's some mental stuff that I thinks pretty good in that department that I don't think have been mentioned yet. These bands are so random...
Discordance Axis
Crowpath
Cephalic Carnage
Into The Moat
Cattle Decapitation
Or if you just take Yngwie Malmsteen and put him with the drummer from Dillinger Escape Plan then put some vocalist like Phil Anselmo ("Cowboys From Hell" era) and then the Primus bass player that would be pretty mad... If anyone knows a band that sound like this then let me know !

I only said technical grindcore -
grindcore fast as fuck powechords with blastbeats and harsh vocals, about the neglection of skill and projection of emotion or a message eg. political or agression. [message - emotion]
so technical grindcore really isn't possible.
look at napalm death and repulsion and carcass.
unless you mean technical in the actual sense of the word, technique, in which the speed, vocal style, etc. is all technique, but lets face it, noone here avtually means technical like that. tech = basically hard to play. [in the most term that its used on this board.]

Playing fast = Grind?
Sorry john Coltrane you have just been demoted.
Also Psyopus have slow songs that are still unique so the fast as humanely possible shit just isn't true.

So you're telling me that a change of pace on an album elimitates their grind influence? Genital Grinder by Carcass?
Besides, I never said that playing fast is equivalent to grind. Re-read my post with your eyes and brain functioning at the same time.

No i'm just saying i think your wrong about the playing fast automatically associates a band with grind, There is plenty of slower pace grind i guess this automatically makes it not grind?

What I'm saying is that Psyopus, quite a lot of the time, are attempting to take music to the absolute limits of velocity and technicality. If that doesn't equate to a grind ethic I don't know what does.

+1 on velocity, but most certainly not technicality, that was never a part of genuine grind(which as it's name implies, is a spinoff hardcore punk with a vocal and guitar sound approach that just grinds).
The foundation of grindcore was simply speed, harshness and extremity, going beyond the death/thrash and hardcore punk bands at the time. That's what founding bands like ND, Terrorizer, Carcass, and Repulsion were doing circa 1986. Huge Discharge, D.R.I., etc. influence.

There are a few retailers that sell it on eBay, which is where I got my copy. Try there.

Nice! I have been searching for MONTHS for that now as well! I didn't think I'd resort to Ebay, but I may have to.

Martyr is very technical as well. But they still are good songwriters. I can actually sit down and listen to them for extended periods of time. I don't know if they are the most technical though.

Not the most, but one of them. I agree with you!! these guys kicks ass!, they are in jazz program in university and cegep.
Six feet under?...Obituary?....Mortician?
Are you kidding?! these band are the less tech i heard!! Im not saying you are stupid because you find it tech, but i had listen to something 224565767 times more tech.
Spiral Architect, Cynic, Martyr, Necrophagist (solos are easier than riffs..wtf!)

Necro, Martyr, and other bands like that seem to use the solos as a complete release of their skill. Solos are usually harder than riffs imo.

good point most of necros solos are just sweeps and harmonic minor/diminished patterns anyway. Cynic and Martyr both riff and solo using various scale/chord forms besides the same two of three over and over. By the way is anyone else just as in awe of paul's solos back in the day on those youtube bootlegs. I mean they are close to flawless and they are live!

Yea orthrelm sucks but the fact that it is (very) technical remains and that is what this thread is about.
If you want good tech.... (dno what you mean by that really but) with passion is pretty melodic tech with lots of sweeping check it out =).
p.s if donkeys can play orthrelm i think that donkeys have finally outdone humans it was only a matter of time.
