Sci-Fi Themed Metal
It seems like there should be at least some sci fi themed metal bands.
But I don't know of any, do you guys? I'm especially interested in ones that might tell a single story throughout the cd.
Thanks!

Nocturnus is the first (and only) name that comes to mind.
Although, Vader did make a video for "The is the War" that has some sci fi theme going on. Too bad that it's like the fruitiest shit ever.

Origin has some sci-fi type themes dealing with space and the creation of the universe and stuff, and Prosthetic Cunt's fucking your Daughter with A Frozen vomit Fuckstick has a pretty sci fi themed cover.

December Wolves aren't sci fi themed, but their music on Blasterpiece Theatre is plagued with almost sctrictly sci-fi movie samples which blende each song seamlessly into the next. It's technical black metal. That is to say, far more technical than your average black metal.

Iron Savior is some pretty decent sci-fi power metal. They check your "single story throughout the CD" box.

Crystal Age - Far Beyond Divine Horizons
(thanks Transient)
Brilliant death metal CD that has some kind of sci-fi story weaved through every song.

Discordance Axis.
They don't have an album devoted to sci-fi, but a lot of lyrics are randomly.

Funerot (Thrash/Speed/Crossover with lyrics about giant robots, space fights, dinosaur monsters, apocolyptic warfare (think Mad Max)
Gigantic Brain (Cyber Grind which has tons of sci-fi influences, hell the band is ment to be an aliens)
Also lets not forget Hypocrisy

Decrepit Birth - ...And Time Begins.
Partly about some universe dominating sci-fi being. I would look more into it but alas, I'm lazy.

Fear Factory is super sci-fi themed. Each of their albums is written like a movie plot.
For example:
Soul of a New Machine - The major theme concerns "man's creation of a machine that could be either technological or governmental". The danger of man vs. machine is created.
Demanufacture - Themes "man's struggles against a machine-controlled government, with each song a chapter in his life. It was believed the album took its inspiration from the movie, Terminator". The conflict against the machines is now a full blown out war. A badass album.
Obsolete - The theme is about "the future of mankind and how machines have taken over humanity. This was inspired by the band's belief that humanity has become too reliant on technology. However, a hero named Edgecrusher sets out to destroy the machines and save humanity." Man is losing the war in this album. The machines have become the controllers of the majority of mankind. This is a very dark album and pretty vicious imo.
Digimortal - This albums theme is about "how man and machine have merged into one. The surviving humans and the machines realize they have to depend on each other if they are going to continue on". It's more of a happy positive album.
The other albums are sci-fi themed to but they have no story lines that relate to the rest. There are other Sci-fi themed bands out there but I think Fear Factory is my favorite.

Well, sci fi. Um, don't lyricists usually write from experience? We'll get some NASA guys in a band and hammer it out.
But I suppose no one is really tapping the space theme too much. What about the movie cartoon "Heavy Metal". If that chick is part of space metal, then I'm all over it.
Death - Cosmic Sea - Instrumental with some weird bubbling sounds.
I'm just waiting for a income tax themed band. Taxes confuse me all the time and if they gots some insight, I'm there!

I only write partly from experience. Mostly from thoughts, or beilefs, with som plot-based stuff. I do have some experience-based ones though.
Theory In Practice are fairly sci-fi, ain't they?

Scanner, a power metal band from Germany. They are definite sci-fi ers. The already mentioned Nocturnus is the only other band I know of otherwise.
Actually, would anyone say Wormed have a slight sci-fi thing going on.

All the stoner/acid rock bands sing about the cosmos and being an asteroid baby!
Saxon did a song about the moon landings.
Maiden did 'Somewhere in Tme'
And a few bands have done the odd song about space or things solar but other than that band who dress up like Star Wars characters that was posted in 'funny internet crap' about a year ago, I can't think of any.

sci fi metal. hmm. my best three, which are very much what you are asking for are:
Darkside
Oxiplegatz
Bal-Sagoth
the first two are much more appropriate for your request though.

We have no albums out so it doesnt really help, but my band has been doing a sci fi thing.....the first 5 songs we wrote are based around a detailed story my singer developed about an abduction (in a nutshell, the victim is highly spiritual, and tricked by a series of illusions and hallucinations and is mistaking them as signs from god, rather than being led in by aliens). It sounds lame when I explain it, the singer does a much better job. The next group of songs we write are all going to be based off a theme involving a cosmic disaster impacting life on earth. Going to be less of a story line and more loosely tied songs. We are trying to go for something different, since it seems like everyone is singing about gore, satan, vikings or politics..and we really don't have anything bothering us to write about lol.

Quite wrong man. Lyricists usually write better from experience, doesn't mean they have to. They especially don't in Death metal.
Many bands are 'tapping' the space theme. Already mentioned, Wormed and Theory in Practice definantly do, and I mentioned Decrepit Birth, which has many space and universe themes.
Also, from Death Metal...
Origin - have some space themes + all the space imagery, album covers, etc.
Internal Suffering - Awakening of the Rebel has some pretty fucking cool space themes, all about universe domination and whatnot.
Hell, even Death have some space themes, e.g. "Vacant Planets".
I had more but my computer randomly restarted when I was typing this so I forgot some. May post later. Dammit.

Atreyu got their name from the character in The Neverending Story.
Heavenly's recent album (forgot the title, sorry) is an entire story. Maybe not terribly sci-fi but a cool story nonetheless.

?
They're giving us lyrics (shitty or not) when pretty much all of them don't physically engage in murder, rape and necrophilia.
