Alone.........
well, my band pretty much disintigrated, and I am all alone to do it............
now, im not too sad though....... i still have hope and i wanna hear your ideas.....
what does someone do when they want to start a band and they are alone? i know many bands get record deals when they are only 1 or 2 people. Im pretty sure bands like NIN and the Kovenant only have 1 or 2 guys when they signed to a label......
so here is my plan, i have a guitar, bass, keyboard, synthesizer, and PA system. Plus a pretty steady flow of income to invest in further stuff. I can learn all the instrument tracks and vocals, and ill go to a studio and record it all by myself (ill have to buy a drum machine though). Meanwhile, while i distribute the demo all over the place, i can look to either start my own band, or if that doesnt work, i can join one. i have lotsa instruments and a PA so i can probably join a band quickly........
if i join a band though, it might suck, when looking through the music classifieds, i see such ads as:
"guitarist wanted for metal band. We cover limp bizcuit, linkin park, and SOAD."
or
".........our influences include godsmack, P.O.D. and Slipknot"
any help or ideas? i can really use it........

yeah this situation sucks. i'm try to find others mate to start a band, but there's not musician and the ones that "play' guitar are under the nu-metal forces.
you can probably post something in a newspapers, in a cd or instrument shop, or at high school/university/work. Or a better idea would to go to the shows, (you MUST like going to see show ) so try to talk to others persons.
but i think you can record something good alone, but its not a good idea to start a band, because the members will be "forced" to learn your songs...if you understand me
that my opinion, hope it helps
hails
maybe you can convert the nu-metallers to true metal

A mate and I learned to play guitar together and we had our sight set on making it work, but we had trouble finding a drummer and our potential bassists fell through. After a while we got jobs, gf's, etc, and things changed. We haven't played together in the last two years at least. So here I am... 27 years old and out of practise, trying to buy shit so I can hopefully record songs on my own.

would it seem lame to play live gigs using a drum machine?

If you like what you're doing then it doesn't matter, man. The ingredients don't matter, it's the end product that makes the difference, if you understand what I'm gettin at.

thats true, but what im saying is, if you went and saw a local band play live, and all the drumming was real fast, but it was all preprogrammed on a machine, would you think of it to be lame?

For me personally I think it would depend on how many people were on stage...
If it was just one person out there, but having a full band sound, I'd think it was pretty cool, unless it sounded like shit. But if I see three guitarists, a bassist, a singer, a backup singer, and then a drum machine, I wouldn't have much respect for it...or at least as much.

to some extent. although, you could use it to produce demo's, and put out adds with the demo's saying "i need someone to do this" etc. thats how lots of the local metal bands here start because metalheads are few and far in between.

what if the line up was:
1 guitarist/vocalist
1 lead guitar
1 bass
1 keyboardist/ drum machine operator
that is Samael's current line up, and it may be mine. so i guess its not too bad
Samaels old drummer took over keyboard duties and he just prerecords his drum tracks for live gigs

I can't even imagine how it would be to do a live gig without a drummer...
I don't know, sure it's possible but aren't you missing something then?
I know it's hard to find a band etc. I'm just a lucky bastard, but starting something on your own is even harder, I think

i wish i could find some follower musicians. people that just play what you give em. most bands have those, but when you are starting out, everyone wants a say in what it will sound like (and with good reason).

yeah, but thats what a band is all about, playing TOGETHER, everybody does his own part in his own way. that's the only way you'll create a unique sound (except if everybody loves slipknot or something)
there is no such thing as follower musicans, the guy who do that are just lame, like professional bands that play on weddings etc.
it's just a together thingy, so try to find people that are in the same musical direction as you are and you'll probably work something out, that's how I started, a couple of friends of mine wanted me in their band and I knew them for a long time, they knew I was into metal and that's pretty much my story

a lot of bands have follower musicians. like Nightwish. Tuomas writes almost all their stuff. or Type O, pete writes all the music. Id say almost every band has at least 1 follower musician.

yeah but they LIKE the stuff they make, it's not like they are playing a completely diffrent thing they don't want to play...
In most bands stuff is written by one person and than alternated by others in that same band, to improve it...
what I mean is, if you have a punker in your metalband and he plays whatever you tell him to, he's bound to get pissed off at a certain point..
I don't think you should call people who play the stuff that another person in the band wrote 'follower-musicians'
that sounds like those guys are robots and have no influence in the band at all
