Yeah, if you want to play it, but then don't want to play it in 10 minutes......then you probably really shouldn't be playing it.

if you can't make it ten minutes, you won't have the perseverance to improve. don't you have some favorite albums you can put on for motivation??

I used to kind of have this problem, although I could normally stand more than 10 mins! I just never really felt motivated or found I enjoyed it. My problem was that I was listening to the wrong kind of music. Maybe assess what you are listening to, set aside £30 and go and buy a couple of new albums from bands you maybe won't have listened to before. It was only after I found Melodic Death after years of screwing around with punk and grunge did I actually really start enjoying guitar playing.

It takes discipline to learn the guitar.
It takes even more discipline to be good at it. Take your rutine and stick with it. At the end of your practice time, just jam. Play whatever the hell you want. even if you think the neigbors next door are slamming their head against the bathroom wall. You are going to get bored and you are going to get frustrated. But thats something you have to work past. KEEP PLAYING then you will see how good you are becoming and it won't be so boring. Just stick with it and play through it. Learn a song, figure one out, practice with a friend, and put your thoughts and feelings out through your guitar.
Practice for 10 minutes at a time for say... 6 Times a day, but put an hour in between. Then later on down the line, make it 20 minutes 3 times a day. Then 30 minutes 2 times a day. THEN for 1 hour a day. Then just keep the cycle going.
Good luck!

trying to learn songs often bores and frustrates me, so i try to take a more disciplined approach to scales and exercises, but also do a lot of jamming and improvising stuff.
two things have helped me to improve a lot more. 1) recording myself.. when i make a riff, i record it to the pc just to keep track of it, but it's also good to force yourself to record along to a click track, and of course useful to hear yourself in playback. and 2) guitar pro.. it makes learning songs/riffs much easier because you can slow it down and loop it while the notes remain in proportional rhythm.

I took lessons right when I began playing, but I quit after a month because I found it was funner to just jam what my gut told me to jam. Plus, when you're a noobie, you don't know how fast you could or should be improving and it's hard to dissect whatever scheme the teacher might have orchestrated in order to keep his wallet full and keep you coming. I definitely agree that it takes discipline to get better but it should always remain fun.. there's no other reason than to have fun, imo... unless you're willing to dress like a moron and write what MTV wants to hear in order to get rich.
Listen to ALL types of music.. from metal to swing... from classical to house... from African tribal music to prog. jazz. It will change your perception of music and likewise, open your eyes to what can really be acheived with the guitar. The possibilities are simply endless.
