I hate to admit it.
Korn
Limp Bizkit
System of a Down.

But I've come a long way to learn how to play some Disgorge, Soilent Green, Deeds of Flesh, and Suffocation.

Kirk Hammett, James Hetfield, Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King, Dimebag and Slash all inspired me to START playing guitar. Ever since then a lot of other guitarists from various genres inspired me to be a better guitarist.

Actually my sister got me started playing guitar like 3 years ago, it was some stupid bet where I said I could be better than her in two weeks of playing. She had been playing for 4 years at the time I think.

The guitar players that inspired me to go further and work harder.

Friends - They have given me advice along the way

My guitar Teacher - He's been around since I started playing

Of course my sister all those years ago.

Metallica - They helped pull me into the metal world and play guitar.

Megadeth - They made me want to work harder and get better at my instrument.

Mohammad Scuimez - I've listened to a lot of different guitar players since I got into guitar oriented music, and the band I always go back to is Necrophagist. So he definitely is my favorite guitarist, and has pushed me to work harder.

That's about all.

i've listened to metal since i was maybe 9 or 10, but only began playing guitar after 20 so it's hard to say who made me go start. the guitarists who always made me wish i could play guitar were zakk wylde (i don't like BLS, i am talking about "no rest.." through "no more tears" era ozzy and also his pride & glory side project), jeff hanneman, kirk hammet, marty friedman, bill steer & mike amott. i would say randy rhoads too, because i always thought he was insanely talented, but the recording quality of the records he was on just sounded dull compared to the newer stuff. i came to appreciate him much more after i started playing guitar. still he always sounded incredible to me on "tribute" so that's probably one of my most favorite guitar albums of all. there were also some bands who i was not a huge fan of but loved their guitarists playing and tone, like rocky george of suicidal tendencies, allen west and james murphy in obituary, eddie van halen, and probably others.

Actually, the guitar itself interested me 1000 times more than any other instrument when I was a little kid, and it was only a matter of time before a guitar and I would meet (when I was about 14). But prior to actually picking it up, I went through a breif nu-metal phase, which was soon forged out of the picture upon discovering Slayer and Metallica (typical late-'90s kid's birth as a metalhead). But since I started playing, Chuck Schuldiner has been by leaps and bounds the single most influential figure on my playing and on my general take on music. I remember the first time I heard Death, it was surreal.. I was an instant fan, to say the least. Some other greatly influential players for me were Marty Friedman, Jason Becker, Dave Mustaine, James Murphy, Hendrix, Slash, SRV, Dimebag, and plenty more..

This is easy. Mr. Allshouse, my Jr. High choir director. He had an old Gibson ES and couldn't play piano so he'd play guitar. I heard "Joe Turner Blues" and was hooked.

I was a total guitar n00b until I heard Thunderstruck, then I was like "shit I gotta learn that!" so I have to say that Angus Young inspired me greatly. Dave Murray and Richie Sambora were also big sources for guitar stuff.

this girl i really liked played guitar, and i thought it looked fun, that was the first step of interest

Bludgeon --> my first steps away from slipknot and all the other nu metal crap that i thought was death metal... oh how little did i know.
Bloodbath --> sickest tone evar
Bolt Thrower
Cannibal corpse --> specifically the songs Gutted and Compelled to Lacerate.

then i rented a shitty peavey package and started lessons.

NO way. Listen to Erosion Of Sanity; that cd sounded like it was in total vane of Suffocation, so that is why I think Luc Lemay mentioned him.

But yea, Luc is also one of the bros that inspired me to play. The whole Gorguts discography is amazing and you gotta love his wicked vocals.

Not random at all man, Suffo were a huge influence to Gorguts. Erosion of Sanity indeed was definitely heavily inspired by Effigy of the Forgotten. They both used the same amps too. (Ampeg VH140C's)

What's wrong with their more experimental albums? They kicked ass man, and they're still death metal to me. If anything they improved when they found their own sound with Obscura and FWTH.

I started playing first when I was 5, at school, and did that for a few years but then stopped... it wasn't until I was about 15 that I actually wanted to play, by then I was listening to Hendrix, RATM, SOAD, Sum 41 , and my biggest influnece and that time was Jeff Buckley because I totally loved his stuff!!! A few months later I got some metal CDs though, then everything got a bit silly....

Meshuggah and Fear Factory were my original guitar influences. I liked how fuxked up and low Meshuggah were, and I loved the fast-picked 'brrrr' sound of Fear Factory. It was my original motivation to learn tremolo picking on guitar, and I managed to learn it in a couple of months, only it took me a bit longer to get it tight.

I don't remember who or what it was that actually made me want to pick up a guitar, I was just madly in love with all music anyway and wanted to play something else besides keyboards. In all honesty it was probably David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, as his stuff was the first things I learned on the guitar. However one player who did inspire me to practice mad hours a day was Steve Vai.

I've always liked music from video games and other retarded shit like that. So when I played a game called guilty gear I wanted to learn how to shred. And I really sucked untill I got into children of bodom (my first metal band). So some guitarists that inspire me are:
Daisuke Ishiwatari
Alexi Laiho
Chuck Schuldiner
Jeff Loomis

to play in the beginning it was probably thrash bands, etallica,Megadeth,Slayer, so forth so on, but then I started to get a little more serious and watched this video that Paul Gilbert did(I think it was the second Intense rock video) from then on it has been shred, eat(and shred), shred, sleep(and shred), repeat.

Apart from the fellas I mentioned, the solo to "Return to Flesh" had a big impact on me wanting to play guitar.

Ritchie Blackmore. For both the intrest and devotion(sp?) to play well.

I think Child in Time or Highway Star first got me to go; "Fuck, I want to be able to do that!", and later Stargazer to make me want to perfect my bending and fretting precision.

But since then a lot of guys have influenced me such as:

Chuck
David Gilmour
Mikael Akerfeldt
Steven Wilson
and so forth...

nobody really. i was 14 or 15 years old and just going to school and hanging out with friends. my parents got sick of me not doing anything but getting into trouble with my friends and made me pick something to take up a chunk of my time. they said they'd make me sign up for some sport at school or some shit and after a while of threats one of them came up with the idea of learning an instrument, the guitar.. thinking that was the least of all the "evils" they were forcing upon me, i started taking some lessons and got a used yamaha something or other..once i moved, i stopped the lessons, but kept playing.

now its about 10 years later and i couldn't thank them enough for forcing me to play haha. pretty ironic...

I saw a pic of Kerry King and thought "Fuck me!" but lately I've been listening alot to jazz/blues/fusion and it has rubbed on to me and it makes we want to get better.

Actually music just interested me, and thats how i got into it. Started doing vocals at first, then moved to guitar. But i mean i guess you could say i have a lot of thrash(Overkill, Forbidden), groove(Machine Head, Pantera), nu(old Staind, old Slipknot) metal influences from those guitarist.

People always said his songs were easy, so I started playing his songs on my dad's accoustic and thats were it started really. I like how he could make nice songs with simple stuff. Good to impress non-guitarists.

Dave Murray, Kirk hammet those are now my biggest influences. Also Ac/dc and Priest.

Growing up there were only acoustic guitars in the house. Didn't decide to seriously make an effort on the guitar until I heard Alexi Laiho play. I'm not a Children of Bodom listener anymore, but I have to attribute where I've gotten today to him.

I don't care what anyone thinks but the two guitarists that inspired me to play metal were Mick Thomson and Kerry King.

Yes, I'm sure I will get alnog just fine. I've moved on a bit since then though you have to understand. Cannibal Corpse are the main band I look up to these days (guitar wise).

I guess my first "push" into the guitar world was by watching Jack White of the White Stripes. Then later on it was Matt Heafy of Trivium (-_-...) I hate to admit it but I think learning Trivium songs was what gave me a really strong base for my learning. I built up a lot of down-stroke speed and accuracy.

It was the metalcore bands I liked back then which acted as a springboard to bring me onto harsher music, and eventually up to brutal death metal- the likes of Wormed, Amputated, etc

Of course, my inspiration up till this day is Buckethead. A friend introduced me to his work a couple of years ago and I was blown away. Definitally my favourite guitarist of all time. Ever. Ever.

..

Ever.

Chuck Schuldiner and Jeff Hannemann were the ones who made me want to start. These days I take influence from pretty much everything I listen to, anything from Wu-Tang Clan to Disgorge, but it still manages to be brutal.

I also expect a happy birthday tommorrow. Fags.

Oh man, that movie kicks so much ass. Always pissed off that Vai/Jack Butler had to lose to the Karate Kid. Like I said before, Vai was one of my #1 inspirations to put in "the work."

No offence taken. Slipknot just got me into heavy music, I never listen to them anymore though.

Man, I feel old. Most of the fore-mentionad bands didn't even exist when I started playing, which was in the early 90's. Anyhow, it was definately Metallica who inspired me (although I rarely listen to them anymore).

No one particularly inspired me to start playing it. I just started one day.

Now I'm inspired mostly by Chris Arp.

I always wanted to play guitar so my mom bought me a bass.... LOL tl;dr skip to the bottem

anyways i got a job afterwards and bought a sweet, yet broke down, BC Warlock guitar that was cumishly pearly white...that i sold a year later and bought a nice ESP LTD f-200 with a floyd rose that i now hate =/

anyways i digress i just wanted to play guitar for like no reason but the guitarist that influenced me most to get better is muhammed from necrophagist, although i got a long ways away to get that good

I actually just had an epiphany one day and decided I needed to start playing. Up to that point I didn't have any interest in guitar. My biggest influence in the beginning was Jimmy Page. Dimebag has since become a huge influence and my favorite player. And these days Jason Becker is the biggest influence on my playing.

No an epiphany (not a guitar), like a sudden realization one day that I needed to play guitar.

Well, I used to listen to alot of Black Sabbath.. THEN! I finally heard 'The Red in the Sky is Ours' by At the Gates.. Holy fuck I was blown away and needed to learn to play guitar and write music like Anders Björler. I'd say hes my one and only influence nowadays, along with some others like the In Flames duo back in 'Lunar strain' and most of the other older swedish scene axe players.
