Using a Metronome
i want to practice using a metronome so i can make sure i'm learning the geetar right but im not sure what do to like when i'm trying to learn the first riff in decapitated's human dust http://metaltabs.com/tab/10285/ do i jsut play every single not as slow as the metronome is going or not? it seems like the three notes on the C string that goes 6-7-6 is a bit faster than the rest of the song and it doesn't make sense to me if i would play them as slow as the metronome is going. i hope i explained my problem clearly and that someone can help me

Best tip....don't think about what you're playing
Try to feel it then practice that particular riff using a metronome. If you start thinking too much and analyzing what you're doing, you'll fuck up your ability to think in time.

i think that is most of the problem cause then in my head all i hear is the click of the metronome and then i screw up with my fingers

Well first off, if you're having trouble with timing, technical death metal is not the place to start learning it.
On that note, it could be a tempo change, but I doubt it. Just listen to the song like the other guy said, and try to play it in time with the metronome.
Also if they have the song for guitar pro or power tab, use that so you can see the exact timing. Guitar tabs require a hell of alot of guessing to be used properly. Sheet music eliminates that problem.

the metronome is just your guide... it keeps the time in (usually) a 4/4 rhythm pattern. if the song calls for an quarter note, then play one note per click.. if it's an 8th note, then two notes per click, and if it's a sixteenth note, then it's 4 notes per click. like metal=life said, try not to think about the metronome. it's a good idea to practice scale and chromatic runs with a metronome to get used to it. if you put on almost any song and turn on a metronome in sync, you will notice there are all kinds of durations of notes so it's not always going to be one note per click, or always two, etc.
also, a much better approach is to find a Guitar Pro version of the song if possible. i have been using this more lately and it's helped me a ton. you can highlight the riff you're working on, and loop it at a slow speed to practice it. this approach is probably better than a metronome when it comes to trying to play someone else's stuff, at least when you are learning it. it's also great because it's completely unforgiving.. if you're not playing it accurately, you know it immediately. have fun.

a metronome plays in 4th notes. you can either play 4th notes with it, or you can play 8th notes, which you add an extra note per beat, or you can be daring and try 16th notes. if you try 16th notes you better put the fucker at like 60 bpm max to start with

+1 for guitar pro, GP is awesome for slowing down sections to nail them + you can change how much you slow it down by, then speed it back up to normal when you get the hang of it.
