REAL and STUDIO FAKED live album list

ive been thinking about making this thread for a while. what are some "live" albums that are real and what are some that have obvious studio touch ups? prove your point too....

REAL-
incantation - blasphemy in brazil. guitar channel cuts in and out and you can tell from the playing its the real deal.
suffocation - close of a chapter. its not a soundboard recording so thus itd be REALLY hard to fake. besides it sounds pretty crappy. a general rule of thumb is if it sounds GREAT its probably touched up.
cryptopsy- none so live. can tell from sloppy playing and panning its real
bodom - chaos ridden years. theres a dvd that goes along with it, and you can tell from the panning and sloppy playing
death - the live albums.

FAKE- (the fun part of this thread)
martyr -extracting the core. everytime theres a solo, a second (different) rhythm guitar part appears in the speaker, while the solo gets panned to the center. they don't have 3 guitar players..

bodom - tokyo warhearts. i hate to admit it because this is my favorite "live" album of al time, but i just gave it a really close listen today and you can hear volume and tone differences in the right (alexi) channel during solos and stuff. besides, when i've seen them, he hasnt played as cleanly as he does on this album.

emperor - emperial live ceremony. check the booklet, im pretty sure theres like the studio where they recorded the touch ups listed in the credits.

yattering - creative chaos. dvd and shitty playing all around show that its real

ahhh you dick you beat me to it. ill be back!!! just watch

REAL:
Samhain Live 85-86 - It has that semi good sound quality for a live recording. The microphone drowns out a little cause of Danzig running around and sometimes each instrument overpowers the other. The background vocals always seem distant and then loud also as if the other members struggle slightly to keep up with the music and they run out of breath every now and then hahaha. The audience is also clearly there and it seems as if there isnt many people there

The most infamous fake live metal album in history.

This isn't a live album, but Deicide's Amon- Feasting the Beast is bullshit. The first 6 songs are clearly remakes of older versions, while the last 4 are legitimate demos.

metallica had a similar "live" in the studio demo or ep or b side of some such i think. thats actually not so bad. "live in the studio" is fair game if its announced

The Sepultura live concert video that came out in the early 90's (forget the name of it 'Under Grey Skies'???) Andreas re-recorded his lead breaks.

Metallica's b-side to the Jump in the Fire ep contained supposedly live recordings of Phantom Lord and Seek and Destroy. They were studio tracks with crowd noise and James' banter added on.

AC/DC If You Want Blood album. Bon Scott re-recorded his vocals, but rumour has it this was due to technical difficulties that plagued the original show(microphone playing up or something)?

I believed for a long time that it was a genuine live album.

I'm gonna say Kamelot's new DVD had some touch-ups done to it. Not certain though...

Umm, that's what it is, it's a collection of their demos, not a fake.

No, Entangled in Chaos was real.

The Hate Eternal DVD was not touched up one bit, says it in the DVD, just mixed by Erik himself. And it still sounds damned good.

By the way, there's a difference between a studio faked album and one that's been touched up with compression/processing. True studio faking = re-recording a fucked up riff/solo above the recording and processing the fuck out of it so that it sounds like it was part of the original. I only know Kiss did that.

I'm sure 90% of all the ones you've mentioned were fake were not truly overdubbed, only processed.

this isnt an album, but Slayer's Still Reigning....i noticed the scream he does on Angel of Death..it doesnt sound like his scream. when he finishes it, it seems like the crowd noise has died down profusely, and a reverb echo was increased. that just me though?

Interesting enough, then, that those first tracks are mysteriously better sounding than anything on the entire first album. You'd have be deaf to not notice the difference in production from the first album to those supposed 'demos.' You don't even have to listen to all of them. Just Sacrificial Suicide will do. The difference between the Deicide version and the 'demo' is staggering.

The 'demos' sound as though they were re-recorded during the Legion sessions, the production sounds the same and the guitars are tuned to E. Legion is the only Deicide in E.

From the top of my head I can remember reading somewhere that "Kick Out The Jams" had 'little OR no overdubs' on it. I'm pretty sure they did polish it up in the studio just a tad.
My favorite case of turd polishing on live albums has to go to CDs 1 and 2 of the first Genesis Archives Box Set. It's a 1974 live bootleg of when they played the entire Lamb Lies Down On Broadway album in L.A. 40% of Peter Gabriel's vocals were overdubbed for it's release in 1998, 24 years after they played the show. You can totally tell which parts are original and which ones were overdubbed - 24 years does alot to a singer's voice! Steve Hackett's guitars are "fixed" also and painfully obvious where the panning/volume/tone totally changes...
It's pretty known though lots of the big progressive bands, Yes especially, "fixed up" their live albums. Some guys just didn't even give a fuck, like Zappa, who'd combine multiple takes and edits of live performances and record parts in the studio to get a good version of a song. But in a way that's what makes some albums of his like "Roxy & Elsewhere" really cool.

Yeah, I'd guess that they at least fooled around with some leveling.

My favorite live album is probably Alice in Chains - Unplugged. I havent' a clue if any of it was redubbed. I'd expect some extra leveling to go into any official live release though.

thats actually also probably my favorite. DEFINITELY lately. as far as faked, i honestly dont think so. first of all, its not like theyre playing bodom leads so there isnt that much difficulty involved. second of all theyre all really talented, and third of all there is an outtake. layne forgets the lyrics to sludge factory (how fucking ironic) and the whole band stops...
