lol. I don't think his abilities are very good. He plays with his fingers on "Show No Mercy". He does a few riffs mimicking some guitar that might be a tad bit challenging...but nothing too special.

Yeah, lame topic indeed. Maybe you should look for more into half decent metal bassists..which are well...almost everyone except Tom Araya.

so youre fine with just doing the bare minimum, and not over achieving in life?
I hope you dont take yourself seriously as an aspiring musician, because you wont make it very far in the business at all with that state of mind.
just accepting the mimimum gets you a C average, which even thou can make you the president of the united states apparently. But it wont help you anywhere else. trust me.

There's a difference between getting by in life on a C average and doing what's best for a song. A lot of bassists here think that the best thing to do would be to come up with the most exciting bassline for every song, but a lot of the time what Tom does will end up being better for the song and the band, even if it's not as great a showcase for a bassist. There's a lot to be said for doing what the song needs, and not ruining it by doing more any more than you would by doing less.
Of course, in Tom's case it seems to be a lack of talent and imagination as a musician, which can't exactly be lauded. But, at least he knows what he can do and doesn't do anything to detract from the song or band.

Indeed. On Hell Awaits his basslines (and bassplaying) is quite great, some of the riffs on Necrophiliac/Kill Again/At Dawn they Sleep... Dayumn shizzle.

Im not saying that you should kill yourself on every song from exhaustion.
Just push yourself.
If you're telling me that a better bassplayer wouldnt make slayer a better band as a whole than you are full of shit.
Dont take examples from lemmy and araya's bass playing, they're mediocre bassists. NEVER accept a plateau in your abilities.

You have to listen to Lemmy's playing in Hawkwind - Check out "Space Ritual". You won't believe it's the same guy. Anything but mediocre.
(of course he didn't sing in Hawkwind)

araya has never stood out to me.i respect the fact that he is singing while playing some extremely uptempo shit, but he doesnt blow me away as a bassist by any means. its like one of you said (pst88 i think), his basslines have a total lack of imagination, and quite frankly it bores the hell out of me.

i know it is heresy and such but i cant stand his voice anyways, i'd prefer he just played bass...and for the topic: i guess he isnt the worst bassist around but he certainly isnt one that will provide you the inspiration to become a great

I too despise his vocals, but im seeing them on the 23rd of this month for the musical aspects of the band.

Lemmy was great with Hawkwind! And he did sing, he sang "Silver Machine" and a couple of others
I don't know about "Pushing yourself", Slayer's bass-lines fit the band, if he suddenly jumped in with 8-string mayhem it just wouldn't fit right imo, they aren't the most technical band to begin with, throwing in a crazy tech' bassline would ruin the groove. I've seen 'em live a couple of times and Tom's bass playing was great, not tech' but he did it well.

+1 on Sting..
You guys forgot Les Claypool, playing technical lines and singing/talking at the same time..
I respect Araya for his singing and playing, but his bass playing isnt amazing, im sure he could some pretty impressive stuff, but its not really needed..

Then explain Gene Simmons for me if we're talking about "the business" of it all. That shitass band has made more money than all the bands I listen to combined.

Ok yeah... - Geddy Lee
- Sting
- Les Claypool
- Lemmy Kilmister
- Fat Mike (Mike Burkett from NOFX) It isn't metal, but he does have some sick bass lines and sings lead.
Those are the only ones I can think of at the moment.
Man I'm so fucking happy that the police are back together

good god NOFX, they are just as queer as Slayer, Tom Arya sounds like a fuckin cavewoman on the rag and his bass playing is subpar at best.

Add Steve Tucker, Jared Anderson [R.I.P.] and Ron Royce of Coroner to the list of bass players who can sing and slay at the same time. I'm sure there are tons of others.
Tom Araya is average, I'd rate him about the same skill level as Glen Benton. It's like the case with Roger Waters - does he go fucking all DiGorgio on the bass? No, but what he played was great for Pink Floyd and his solo stuff.
I'm also happy the Police got back together.

Ok man...I agree with everything that you say about Slayer. But just because you don't listen to punk doesn't mean you have to shit all over it, Fat Mike is actually a really good bass player when it comes to punk, and a pretty good singer. So try not to be so ignorant.

I'm just not a Slayer fan at all. The only Slayer song I ever liked was 'Raining Blood' ...they just aren't special. God Hates Us All was a decent album. Other than that...Slayer just never hit it that hard for me...I don't insult them but yeah, they don't make my pants sticky so whatever.

I saw slayer tonight, for some reason they had the bass boosted way higher than it would ever have a reason to be. The whole show sounded like fucking mud.
Over all I was having a good time, till some fatass hardcore kid fell on my leg and hyper-extended my knee.
I was sent limping from a slayer pit.....BY A 12 YEAR OLD IN AN ATREYU SHIRT!
