"They tuned their guitars in unconventional ways, and some, influenced by classical musicians, composed songs that required high degrees of discipline and technical virtuosity to play. Onstage, artists often wore sweatpants to demonstrate their athleticism and lack of pretense; the genre’s signature vocal style is a heavy growling chant. (“We like it when it’s simply rotten,” one musician told me.) It is a subculture in love with its offensiveness, and obsessive about guarding its artistic purity."
" Where heavy metal gets a lot of the guys who lift weights and punch out beer cans, death metal is a really interesting combination of people, but it’s a lot of just nerd"
Well at least it's relatively accurate
An interesting find, Davie.

Im partway through reading this, scanning some portions, and it turns out he lived in the same area as me in the years it covers so far. A little eerie seeing my city name there :P
Interesting read, I want to hear those tapes he made, heh.

Yeah, it is. I only got about halfway through it, but the guy sounds like he's a bit bizarre with a Mother Earth News type upbringing. Freaky how some people turn out. I'll read the rest later.

Haha, at least they got their interpretation of "Death Metal" accurate enough for me. Bad-fucking-ass.
"During the summer of 1993, Gadahn decided to try composing his own music, even though he didn’t really know how to play an instrument. (He briefly took guitar lessons and claimed to have learned “pieces by Zeppelin, Mancini, Thorogood, and Ozzy.”) He formed a one-man band called Aphasia; his first recording was an hour long. “The music can be described as an experimental symphonic ambient electronic industrial noise collage, depending upon the listener’s point of view,” Gadahn wrote to a friend. To make it, he used a Casio synthesizer, two-track tape recorders, a cymbal, and his voice. Gadahn advertised Aphasia to his pen pals as “melodic yet musically-removed,” and he found humor in its rawness. He designed an Aphasia logo, and referred to himself as “Noise dork Aphasia.” In the next two years, he released at least five Aphasia recordings, including “Non-Relativistic Quantum Mechanics” and “Delirium: 7 Hallucinatory Interludes, Op. 2.”"

My thoughts exactly after I read that.
So his dad was the one who was a psychedelic rocker?... and that lead to a death metal son (understandable), and then he converted to a believer in Islam and advocates Jihad, but says christianity is full of dogmatism and 'wackiness'. I think he needs a bit of consciousness raising, and should look to see if hypocrisy is written somewhere on the mirror.

I had a similar discussion with someone before, about this. How, at the age of 40, i dont think Im going to really be in to metal. I think its weird to think that when we're our parents that we're either going to be different OR still listen to extreme metal, which is something I cant imagine.
And yeah getting tired of death metal is all too easy given how stale and incestuous it can get.
I can also definitely see how some people turn to religion after outgrowing it. Fuck that? nah. I almost see the two going hand in hand in some perverse way, and of course religion does not strictly mean anything "mainstream". I dont know, maybe it all makes me less metal or something, giveashit. two cents for you there though

i think if death metal doesn't head either backwards or forwards, (forwards to me meaning negativa, and backwards meaning OLD-SCHOOL groove oriented metal, it could lose a place in your heart as you age.) like i love metal, i really really do, but i could see myself listing to the grateful dead probably me whole life

That was a pretty intricate article. It seemed to hit a lot of things about radical conversions people go through. Not all are bad, but this one was.
I'll speak my wisdom of the ages to you concerning your comments about your own music you listen to. If it's in you now it will be a return to an old friend when you hear it 20 or 30 years from now. If you stay even remotely involved with music you'll grow in other aspects and ideas, but those roots will always be there. The only way I can foresee a major change in your ideas is if something drastic happens to you where you disregard it completely for whatever reason.
Even Cat Stevens who gave it up at his conversion is back doing some recording and I noticed one of his songs in a commercial recently so he must have given the okay for the use of that. Hopefully the royalties from it aren't going somehow to terrorism since he was on the list at one time. I have a feeling that music was in his blood a lot more than he thought, but that's purely my own speculation.
Once you got it, it's hard to let go. So don't.

To lbs comment. Well the thing as i see (maybe i'm just as biased as people were 20, 30, 40 years ago) I don't see the music now being similar to the music back in the day that people listened to. It appears that this... non-mainstream "underground" types of music are in some ways similar to those way back in the day but in more ways not.
I do know a guy whos 40 years old, a successful accountant (hes from canada believe it or not hah. ) and he listens to everything hard. He goes to shows all the time. Hell when i was in california he stopped by this bar to buy tickets to a death metal show in like a really expensive suit.
Granted it appears (to me) that the death metal type of genre would wear out over time. I don't see people that are 30 or 40 seriously listening to death metal for much more than a song or 2 now and again.
LBxxx here is a question for you. Exactly how different IS music now than it was back in the day? As far as people listening to it.?

I really don't think it is different. The sounds may have changed as far as how they're made, but the ideas of either conformity or rebellion are still there. I think even death metal will have a branch off even if it's subtle. It might be with lyrics or it might be an added sound to the instruments themselves.
I think I'd qualify as one of those that only listens to a few songs at a time in that area of music, but some I've heard has been really good. It's almost like an observation more from a classical standpoint than a rock one and that's something that was said in that article. I'm not big at remembering the names of bands or titles necessarily, but if I hear something I like I'll listen more than once. It doesn't mean that I agree with some of the things said in the piece lyrically.
Look back on the roots of people who were in Cream or Zeppelin even the Beatles and where their roots were, what prompted some of their music, and now all these years later it's still pretty fresh to hear.
It's all a grown and still growing history to me.
