We're probably gonna get flamed, but I own Unhallowed, and I listen to it quite a bit. I think it is pretty cool. They aren't my favorite or anything, but I can listen to them.

Their alright. Drummers pretty good, and vocals aren't too bad.

And yeah, they are closer to the death metal spectrum whajamacallit than metalcore, but metalcore is known to be melo death's bastard brother.

Out of all the At The Gates worshippers, I feel these guys are the best. I love both Unhallowed and Miasma. And I am willing to bet that 90% of the reasons they get labeled as metalcore is cause of their haircuts. Melodic DEATH metal all the way, sorta like Vehemence.

I liked them for some time, then came to realize how highly unoriginal they are. Don't really care for them(nor most melodic death bands) these days. Dismember are a far more entertaining band, at least they're authentically Swedish(and older than AtG), so they're not ripoffs to any degree.

If you want some highly melodeath influenced but very original material, give yourself a listen to Arsis' "A Celebration of Guilt".

Vehemence sounds nothing like them.

I didn't really mean they "sound" similar, but they fit the genre label melodic DEATH metal very well. For example, In Flames was never really melodic death metal, but they get called that all the time. BDM sing about pointless zombies/gore/horror(like death metal), have a hefty amount of blastbeats in their songs(like death metal), have really good solos(like death metal), and have a singer who has a pretty nice growl/screech combo going on(like death metal).

What I meant with their haircuts, and overall image, is that it does look like a metalcore band. They are not huge men with long hair/long beards, or long beards and a shaved head with tatoos everywhere, like your stereotypical death metalhead. They still kick ass though.

If you care about music, the last thing you should be concerned with is the band's image. I couldn't care less if my favorite band was either built like fuckin Schwarzennaeger or looked like a bunch of bald sleep deprived anorexics.

And uh... excuse me, but I don't really know even a small amount of death metal bands that are built like body builders. They all seem pretty normal looking dudes to me. *is 1.89m tall and has hair down to armpits*

At most... Erik Rutan and Steve Tucker (both ex-MA) are sorta beasty fuckers, and one of the ex Deicide guitarists(Eric Hoffman) was on steroids(and other drugs) too so he looked rather inhuman.

Ive seen em live twice now, both times a great show. The singer (unsure of his name) shit himself the first time, had the flu or something and went on performing. That's metal.

Not a bad band by any stretch and all nice guys.

they used to live right by me. brian is a really nice guy. i don't really know much about anybody else since they go through members every couple weeks. they're definitely not my thing but they used to play shows i was at a lot and they definitely used to have a sweet live show but that was years ago i havent really even bought any of the albums. like i said, just not my thing.

I hear what your saying about blastbeats/lyrics/vocals etc., but the solos are wretched and unworthy of any praise. I don't mind BDM at all, but the solos on Miasma are unimpressive, repetitive, and a detriment to the album.

I'd have to agree, and it's something I have to look at myself about. Not that I can play like them or anything, but my rythm playing is getting pretty decent, because I practice at it alot, but my solo type playing is falling behind. BDM's solos, especially when you watch them play, make them seem confused and over-improvised.

i recently read these guys have started on the follow up to miasma. apparently the material has more of an unhallowed vibe. thats what i love about this band that kind of unhinged playing that seems like the whole song could trainwreck at any minute. kind of like dissections older stuff.

A lot of metalcore bands trace their roots back to At The Gates. They birthed one of metal's greatest albums which unfortunately spawned a myriad of generic metalcore bands that torture us to this day. Good thing is that metalcore seems to be on the decline. Hopefully those haircuts will go with them.

Am I the only one who thinks death metal should be brutal? Not melodic? I am tired of bands who take all that is bold and brutal and turn it into another "melodic for the scene kids" thing. Its so stupid.

melodic death occupies a large portion of my cd case. this has nothing to do with "scene kids". melodic death isnt stupid, you just dont like it, and therefore think you have this obligation to shit on it, whenever the opportunity surfaces. im not even sure if the term "scene (kids)" was even around in the mid 90s, and thats when heaps of melodic death bands were starting, or already doing some great stuff.

i dont see anything wrong with melody in death metal. i think it gives the music added depth. plus theres nothing saying you cant be brutal and melodic.

however, i am sick of all of these mcmetal bands playing watered down melodic death metal and selling hundreds of thousands of albums in the process. its kind of cool in a way because some really kick ass bands will get some great exposure from it.for example, cannibal corpse has gotten more publicity in the past year than ive ever seen, and its due to admittedly shitty bands. shit, nile is playing on ozzfest. hopefully all of the little turds that are rocking out to this mallcore atrocity crap will eventually find their way to some of the good stuff.

No i think differences are crucial in any sort of music and the styles progression if everything in the world was brutal i think even people that liked it would grow to fucking hate their stereo, seriosly after death metal you need something to chill out too.

What's wrong with melodic death? I can't say my collection is overflowing with examples of said genre, but a little variety is surely the spice of life. Some people simply don't want to listen to Devourment 24 hours a day, y'know.
