Slow downtuned stuff, kinda like Black Sabbath.
Get last.fm player and do a tag search for "doom metal" and it'll play doom metal.

It's only the fucking heaviest form of music known to man!
Slow and usually very long songs to put you into a depressing mood.

the music is definately more emotionally expressive, more composition with songwriting.
but not necessarilly lyric-wise.
emo-hardcore was termed moreso for the subject matter of the lyrical content, personal issues, social issues rather than political or aggro-retarded "bro" kind of lyrics.
the music was mellower but not really deep
doom is fucking deep shit
edit: usually, some of it sucks
asunder is the best doom band in my humble opinion

Coffins
Winter
Wormphlegm
New Celtic Frost
Burning Church
Electric Wizard
Trouble
Black Sabbath
Evoken
and elements of Autopsy
Bassically just downtuned, heavily distorted slow riffs. Songs range from 8 minutes (Coffins, Winter) to 30 minutes (Wormphlegm, Evoken). Picture Mortician's insanley heavy riffs played by a sleep deprived turtle on heroin.

Hahaha, nice.
There are also the *ahem* subgenras of doom:
Sludge (Corrupted, Eyehategod, and Noothgrush)
Stoner (Electric Wizard, Sleep, OM)
Spacy (YOB, Spaceboy)
Crusty (Dystopia [more up-tempo than most doom])
Drone (Sunn O))), Earth, and some Boris)
Death (diSEMBOWELMENT)
Black (basically minimalist black metal)
Funeral (Skeptisim, Until Death Overtakes Me)
"Slow Rock" (things like Black Sabbath and Saint Vitus)
Just-fucking-slow-and-heavy (Khanate)

I'm one of those people who dig the more 'slowed down death-metal' style of doom as opposed to the more romantic symphonic type.
There's nothing like good ol' brutal death doom.
With that said, it would be mandatory to check out Dusk from the U.S. They were brilliant. 'Majestic Thou In Ruin', their only album, is the heaviest thing I ever heard in my life. It's that good. It's slow but not sleep-inducing, and all the riffs groove and kill you as they go by.
Void Of Silence are a crazed doom band from Italy in a category all their own. Their debut 'Towards The Dusk' still kills me after all these years, even if it is a little on the melodic side. The 'deepness' and the weirdness of it all make up for that.
Time to check out Asunder.

Yea, as autumncurve said, there are a lot of sub-genres, such as:
black/death doom
funeral doom
trad (traditional) doom
sludge
drone
etc.
I'm more of a death and funeral fan myself, not so much into trad doom. A few choice bands include:
Esoteric
Pantheist
Unsilence
Indesinence
The River
The Prophecy
Anathema (earlier releases, the first two are exceptional, their latter work moves away from doom)
My Dying Bride
Mourning Beloveth
Morgion
Saturnus
Swallow The Sun
Thergothon
The 3rd and the Mortal
Electric Wizard
Cathedral (really good grooves to their riffs, with Lee Dorian- of Napalm Death fame- on vocals)
Most of the bands in that list are from the UK, and the Yorkshire area appears to have somewhat of a concentration of good doom bands in it
I believe that nomad is a big doom fan too, so perhaps he may chime in with some other suggestions

Metal containing a significant dose of an aurally ingested poison, inspired largely by the description of Hamlet's father's assassination, is termed 'doom' metal with some safety because nobody takes metalheads seriously when they throw in words that normally would have dangerous connotations. A mistake in this case, however, as doom metal can very easily kill those without natural or acquired immunities.

I don't care what anyone says. Black Sabbath isn't even metal, let alone DOOM. Theres a difference between stoner rock(which sounds like Black Sabbath, IE Witchcraft, The Sword) and DOOM metal. Some doom bands DO have a black sabbath influence. Saint Vitus was like the first Doom Metal band. They sounded alot like black sabbath, but way slower. Doom metal/Sludge Metal bands I like are:
Noothgrush
Leechmilk
Graves at Sea
Sunn
Boris
Sourvien
Mugwart
Weedeater
Brainoil
Dystopia(though a bit more up tempo)
Sea of Deprivation(though a bit more up tempo)
Unearthly Trance

Seriously, the generally accepted inventors of metal are not metal? Quick, tell me another one.
Is this what the forced-fed iPod generation is coming too? I prescribe Sabbath Bloody Sabbath for your ailments.

+1 seriously. What a load of nonsense. Black Sabbath not only created the basic sound of all heavy metal bands to come, but also coined the sound of doom metal. Failure to accept this is a blatant display of either complete musical ignorance or utter elitism and homosexuality.

As everyone else said Black Sabbath started it all. Listen to songs like "Black Sabbath" and "Children Of The Grave" you can hear it. Just because you genre choosers are trying to place names on things doesn't mean you can change the past.

Along with what the last four guys said, their lyrics alone could classify them as doom. Every band you just listed would scold you for saying Sabbath isn't metal because they are one of their main influences. Not to mention THE MAIN influence on every single heavy band in existence.

Of course I know black sabbath started metal, and are even a huge influence on my own guitar playing. That doesn't however make them metal, in my opinion. Just because a band plays dark sounding riffs doesn't make them metal. I recognize everything they've done for metal and I totally love black sabbath, but I don't find them to be metal at all. They're a rock band that started metal. Venom started Black Metal but weren't black metal. I feel the same thing applies.

Maybe if someone actually tried to convince as to how Black Sabbath sounds metal, then maybe I could have a change in opinion. Even they still consider themselves rock, from interviews I've seen. And I don't see how anything I've said is remotely idiotic. They were a rock band that started metal, just like Venom was a thrash band that started black metal.

I don't think you can originate something and then be said not to produce it. Black Sabbath didn't invent any of the particular things we associate with metal, but are the band to bring them together and codify the sound as exemplified by the music they played. The music they played and the music they invented are one and the same; it's impossible to say that they invented metal but didn't play it.
That can be said the huge number of 60's bands (off the top of my head, we'd have to include The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Cream, Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsies, Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart, The Velvet Underground, The Yardbirds/Led Zeppelin, King Crimson, etc) whose music may have first exhibited this or that aspect of what would become metal (and for a lot of the bands I mentioned, the metal that followed them took decades to come about, but the sound is still associated with metal), but Black Sabbath is a different case. They're considered the originators not because one aspect of their music held in it the seed of what would become metal, but because all (or at least enough) of the elements of what we consider to be 'metal' are present on their recording. So it's impossible to say that they started metal but don't play it, just as it would be to say that the Wright brothers didn't build airplanes because they never made an 80-seat, international jet.

I understand that and all, but I still consider them a rock band. Just because they paved the way for darker heavier riffs doesn't make them metal, in my opinion. I'm not arguing at all. If you think they're metal thats great. I don't. I don't really care either way. They're an amazing band

Nobody's saying they just paved the way for darker and heavier riffs. I just listed a bunch of people who did the paving. What they did was bring together certain elements that were floating on the musical currents of the time, mostly in psychedelic music, and codify them into a language that is the basis of metal. In other words, after all those people did the paving, they picked out the right car and were the first ones to drive down this particular road. There's no particular element of the Black Sabbath sound original to the band; what is original is the composition of elements. And since that is the way - the only way - in which they can be said to have 'invented' metal, they can't really be considered anything other than the first metal band, with the operative words being 'metal band.' They didn't just influence a fashion in guitar playing that makes up one part of the metal sound; they're the earliest full-blown example of what metal as it came to be sounds like. That's why they, instead of the earlier bands to play dark and heavy riffs, are considered the first metal band.
Anyway, if you want to continue this, let's find a Black Sabbath thread.

doom metal is basically slower version of deathmetal with a depressing mood to it, like for example My Dying Bride. Well that's how I see it.

I've always been a death/grind guy but recently I've kinda discovered doom too. Been getting right into Halo, Earth, Disembowelment, Pod People, Sunn. It's a nice change to slow things right down

That's why they had the Doom and Grind Fest in Boston(?) the last two years and I think another is comming. Didn't get to go, but Grief and Disrupt were both playing and I wish I would have.

i think they do some shows but i know the members went on to do grief for years and now a similiar band called noosebomb.
anyway, i dont know if this classifies as doom or dark metal, but this song rules.

Yes and yes. I have their split with Noothgrush, but that's it.
On another note has anyone heard Nightstick (I think I mentioned them before a long time ago). Like a psychadelic/avant-garde kind of doom.

I never really got into doom, but I have an album from Novembers doom which I think is doom. I don't really like the spoken word over the music. ESPECIALLY when it doesn't rhyme, it makes it sound corny.

I found out earlier today that there was an Iron Maiden from the UK that played probably the earliest representation of doom ever. I'm kindof interested in hearing how that was, but I don't know if I'd ever be able to find it.

That's a sweet album. Black Stone Wielder is awesome. And I like that singer a lot better than Messiah. Johan Langquist or something.

Doom metal? Well, there are a few different sounds to it. There is death/doom, black/doom, sludge/doom, and funeral doom. Sometimes it's like death metal without the growling, or it could also be just like normal metal like early Metallica. Yes, most of it is a bit like Black Sabbath, but there are some examples I could give you of doom metal bands.
-Candlemass (being one of the best examples)
-Church of Misery
-Earthcorpse
-Tiamat
-Funeral
-Paradise Lost
I am not a huge fan of this genre, but if you want to be a fan of it, I would recommend Candlemass, because they're basically what it is. I don't mind them, either.
