Albums with best solos
Which albums do you think have the best compilation of solos? List however many you want.
My personal favorites are Rust in Peace and Symbolic. Onset of Putrefaction would be a close 3rd.

although it's the only album by Iron Maiden that I have, the solos on "Dance of Death" are good.
Symbolic would have to be my favorite album as far as solos are concerned.

Bleh, I kinda dislike the guitarwork on the new Deicide. Im probably one of the few who prefers the Hoffmans to the new crew. The solos just sound too exotic and too different from what Ive grown to expect from Deicide. Theyd sound better on some fruity DragonForce record, at least in my ears.
Also, although theyre rather simple, I like the solos off Behemoth's Demigod. I love those Egyptian scales they use.

These might or might not be the best, but they are definitely my favorites-
5. Destruction- Release from Agony
4. Athiest- Elements
3. Death- Individual Thought Patters
2. Morbid Angel- Formulas Fatal to the Flesh
1. Megadeth- Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
Honorable mention goes to Possessed- Seven Churches, Destruction- Mad Butcher, Cynic- Focus, and both Watchtower albums.

Allman Brothers - Eat A Peach
Metal solos have never really interested me because they seem to be forced into a song (most, there are exceptions). If I'm gonna listen to solos I want them to flow with the song completely.

I was never impressed by the Hoffman's lead work, I really don't distinguish them from any other random lame thrash/death fretwanker. The exotic-ness of the solos on their last record is what I love about them. Apart from the music itself being super awesome. Listen to Thelema.6 and ZKC too, nice nifty simple but tasteful solos to be heard there.
Most metal bands use solos, so that statement was absurd. They do add to the music if the players have a minimum of taste, rather than just fret-masturbate for 3 minutes. Tasteless guitarists = tasteless music with "forced" solos. Ie: I can't stand CoB.

Well I never said the Hoffmans were better guitarists... theyre probably not. However, I do think their sound suits the band better overall, wankery or not. "Stench" just sounds too different from what Ive grown accustomed to from the band.

Children of Bodom - Really, I want to say all their albums, but Fear The Reaper stands out more to me.
Pantera - Cowboys From Hell
Slayer.... just kiddin!
Carcass - Heartwork
Death - The Sound Of Perserverance
Decapitated - All of vogg's solos are pretty badass... I'm thinking Negation
Ozzy Osbourne - Diary Of A Madman, Blizzard Of Ozz (randy rhoads... nuff said)
Black Label Society - Stronger Than Death

There's nothing absurd about saying that the majority of metal lead guitarists have no idea about the part their lead work plays in the overall structure of a song, and certainly not because 'most metal bands have solos.' I'm not sure the Allman Brothers would be my gold standard, but you definitely, with a few exceptions, have to look outside of metal to find lead work that does anything other than stand as a tribute to its player's overweening competence. Though, taking a slightly different tact, an empty, pyrotechnic style is appropriate to a genre filled mostly with empty, flashy bands of various types.

davie, what are you talking about... the Negation if anything had the worst solos out of all the 4(or 5 if you count TFD) albums. WoC had my favorite solos, and that was their 1st album! But the ones on the other albums are also way ahead of those on the Negation...

That was extremely well said. But I disagree that it's necessary to look outside of metal to spot solos that actually contribute to a song rather than just focus on technicality and skill display. In any case, you'd have to seek out deeper into the genre(as with any other that focuses on technicality too) to find guitarists that do that, rather than just advertise their skill over superficial, flashy, tasteless music. I find more musicality in the solos of lesser-recognized and rarely associated with "HEAVY METAL!11one!" bands than those that receive the most praise(ie: Zakk, Laiho, Rhoads, etc.).
I for one don't NEED solos though, many of my favorite bands don't sport them. But some just can't do without a lead in a certain passage, I think -when they're done right- solos add the space and sense of freedom in a song that is otherwise lacking when a musician locks himself into playing only rythms.

Exactly true, but very rare (for me). Most things I listen to don't have solos, like you said also.

I really enjoy solos, they sort of give a break from the song adding to the whole tension/relief in a very broad sense. For example I really enjoy when a solo starts and than part way through the solo, the solo and rhythm guitar sync up and harmonize and the drums follow. No matter who does it, I always find that very enjoyable in that fantastic tension/relief way.

Usually, when I say that something's true for the majority, I note that it in all likelyhood is untrue in a huge number of cases. So, yes, there are good metal soloists, and a lot of them. But, on the whole, the genre has developed in ways that don't encourage good leadwork.

I guess if you're focusing on the most popular bands on a wider perspective that makes a whole lot of sense. I was focusing on lesser recognized guitarists/bands with that statement.

Not focusing on more popular bands, just on a totality, and recognizing the trends that are typical of the genre. Lesser recognized guitarists/bands represent exceptions more or less by definition, and while exceptions are significant and there are a huge number of exceptions that I can think of, they're still exceptions.
