good jobs that may not require a degree?
does anyone have any advice on any good jobs that may not require 4-year degree? im a high school senior, going to college next semester, and im not to trilled about it. im actually dreading "another 4 years of school" but im thinking about getting a teachers certificate or degree in education ( 2 year degree), just to have, because its a decent job, and a great back up plan if nothing else works out.

take up a career in music education, if youre going to college anyway, and youre planning on doing education as a major.

Plumber, Electrician, etc.
Get that and move to Alberta and make an easy $50-60 an hour.

Doesn't require a 4 year degree but requires other technical schooling and certifications out the ass. Trust me just to be able to get anywhere in "that kind of buisness" you better be ready to shell out a shit load of dough in many many certifications. Its the same thing with networks and all that.
Also to get up to like 50-60 dollars an hour you have to be in the buisness a very long time, not to mention its not extremely easy work and often times the benefits blow. For instance those 2 jobs mentioned alone are almost always 24/7 type of jobs. Unless you like on call jobs, and in my opinion they can take their 24 hour service i'll stick with a regular "9 - 5 " if at all possible. Granted i say that but i'm also planning on being a pilot in the marines and you most definately do not have a regular schedule but i mean come on haha... flying a fucking jet definately constitute giving up set schedules.
And honestly if you think of college as "another 4 years of school" you definately do not belong there anyways. Not saying don't go, but i'm telling you, you most definately are way off base to the purpose and experience of "real" college. I would definately keep that in mind, because college isn't highschool, and lets hope by now you've heard enough people say this.

Not only that its completely subjective to whether something "pays well" or not. It depends on how you plan on living your life and what not, but i can guarrentte the general census would say you can't even remotely make "good money" without one. And to be honest (obviously some degrees are MUCH harder than some other ones) its really an easy task to finish and get one and it says alot aobut you whether you're unwilling to take on the "challange" or "jump through the hoops."

Exactly.
Basically this guy is saying "I'm lazy and stupid and don't feel like doing anything. Someone pay me for it".
There's so many people in the world working their asses off, for pennies. This guy, with all opportunities before him, can't be fucked.
What's even worse is that he can't even be bothered looking up courses etc., he just asks his lazy ass on a forum and hopes to find some easy answers.
I bet you he's American.

Asking for a 'good job that doesn't require a degree' in the abstract is a pretty useless question. A lot of jobs that don't require degrees but would qualify as 'good' - or which normally require degrees but don't in certain cases - require some kind of 'in.' Good plumber and electrician, etc, jobs - in this country at least - mean getting into Unions, which means, aside from that fact that you need connections in the Union to join in almost every case, some kind of apprenticeship before you make the real money. Plus the aforementioned schedule.
Jobs, the ones that don't require specialized degrees, that is, require degrees at all because earning a degree shows that you can follow directions, handle a certain workload within given time constraints, etc. It's basically proof that you can do work. If you don't think you can handle college, you probably can't handle your average desk job, or, for that matter, most steady, long-lasting jobs.
Basically, if you want a good job you have to have some drive towards one. You tend not to get one without some sort of bullshit, so pick your bullshit and eat it.

My university years were the best of my life. Even though my degree was quite lecture intensive compared to others, it was still sparse enough to drink into the small hours and rise late. Plus it was more interesting than anything learnt at school and it delayed for three years my entry into the "real" world of paying taxes, setting up a pension and rising at 6am.
As PST has already said, "good" jobs generally require applicants show drive and commitment and an ability to think on one's feet. My university exams required me to extend upon what was learnt in the classroom and show that I could use the tools that I was taught rather than just regurgitate. This sort of schooling isn't taught or expected in school (well, not in England anyway).
Off the top of my head, I can only think of two jobs that possessing a degree is an absolute must: Doctors and lawyers/barristers. In my experience, other jobs often stipulate that a degree is preferable but as a means of sifting the wheat from the chaff rather than actual technical competence.
I'm an accountant (12 months from becoming Chartered) and to become a Chartered accountant there are two ways you can do it.
1) Obtain a degree and enter directly on to the three year ACA course.
2) Don't obtain a degree, do the two year AAT (accounts and audit technition) qualification and then enrol for the ACA course. There are some ACA course module exemptions for those with AAT and so the ACA course is truncated to two years.
So, there are ways of circumventing the necessity of a degree in gaining a so-called "good" job. The problems with doing so however, often mean trudging around on low pay and performing menial tasks whilst watching a degree-calibre worker enter higher up the ladder.

Good points.
I'm sure there are many other occupations where possessing a degree is an absolute must... Nuclear Physicist, Aeronautical Engineer... Hell most engineering... etc. Shittons.
It also depends on the availability of the job. If there are limited spaces, those with a degree would be much more likely to get the job over a person without one.
You reminded me of a funny story with the lawyer comment. At my school, this super dickhead used to go, his name is Alex Khalil. He was the usual lebanese bully, getting suspended for fights, being a general dickhead... most Aussies will know how the lebs are around here.
Anyway, short story short, he was a dumb cunt, and dropped out.
About one month ago, my friend bought the paper to school, he was in it. He had a whole page, artistic looking into the distance photos and everything, basically complaining he had been trying to get a job and what not but no one wanted to hire him, and Australia is supposed to be good for jobs.
He wants to be a solicitor.

guys comeon. no need to attack the guy.
my advice is to try and get with a company you can stay with for a while. maybe work for a contractor or at a plant if possible. or at least get an accosiates and well, do what i said.just ry to get something that pays OK off and try to stay with them. hell, discount tire starts aroun 10 bucks an hour (i know not that great) but you can stay for a while and keep goin upthe ranks after years. or go to a technical school and be an deisel mechanic or AC mechanic. teachers get paid horribly, but they have freakin GREAT retirement, at least in texas

For what I mentioned you need a 2 year course and then apprenticeship for a few years. At some point he has to write a few more tests, but it's no way a shitload of money. One of my good friend's is a plumber in a union and he's making over $15 an hour and he's been doing it for about a year now. He works 8am-4pm Monday-Friday.
Trades are definitely the quickest way to make a good living these days. Without question.

Animal Attendant You have to study one night a week for two years whilst working if you want to advance though. It's a gritty job, and you don't really get to cuddle and smooch the animals. It's like childcare but with fur and less stupid.

My gunny at my unit has no degree and makes pretty decient money in software engineering.
The entire catch generally with the degree is just getting a foot in the door. If you connections and networks with people you can get jobs that pay well without a degree. Although like he said he may have been barred from getting a job or 2 over the years but he said he would have probably not wanted to work at a company like that anyway. Basicaly a company that is more worried about stuff on paper than the product that he can produce. He said he learned everything he knows about programming (which is a HELL of a lot) completely from on the job training. or as its called OJT. haha
These results probably arent typical unless you have those networks where you can squeeze your way in. For instance i could probably get a job in any of these intel agencies but this Sgt at my unit says she could get me a job working for 60k no problem. This is without a degree and with only "2" years of experience in my field.

Its actually not that hard to get by with no college degree. My friend has been out of college for a good 3 or 4 years now and the closest thing to a job touching his degree (Fine Arts) he's had is a security guard at an art museum.
He's been living on his own since he got out of college.

Like i said and i think most people have an idea. The degree isn't about specializing in a particular area. Thats graduate school and so on. Hence why you can get into graduate programs that are completely out of your major area. Foot in the door... foot in the door.

I didnt really read anything. Just addressing the initial question.
You don't need a "career" or college to stay alive.
