Trey Azagthoth's from Morbid Angel, because he is truly a sorcerer with his guitar, but I have so much respect for them I probably wouldn't do it.

I'd have to rob some guy from 80's hair metal or the Thrash era. Half the time any of those guys from that time would suffice.

Yeah Trey.

As awesome as Muhammed from Necrophagist is, Trey is just more evil, and an originator.

I think he is.

And he can improvise for ever.

The man creates music flawlessly, and it's just so well put together. I think he's great musically. He may not be a shredder but who cares. It's a different discipline.

Surprising to see someone actually knows him on this board.

I have all his records, he's one of the very few genuine jazz artists I like because he doesn't just wank, he puts melody and feeling into it which extends my attention span.

I like Bright Size Life and some of the others a lot, but sometimes I'm not too impressed with his improvisation/get bored with some of the records/songs. Indeed, he's a better musician than he is a shredder, awesome song arrangements, but that's not what this thread is about I think.

I'd go Jason Becker or Alexi Laiho. Although I would love to have Zakk Wyldes speed or Vogg's technicality. I like Jason and Alexi's melodic content and control.

realize that Suicmez is an amazing guitarist but i really just don't like listening to his stuff. The tone is too light, and he doesn't come up with any riffs that do it for me

suicmez no competition, his technical ability is only maybe nearly matched by the likes of pat o brien and The Azathoth

I agree man Rusty Cooley might be fast but thats all his got going for him. Fucker can shred, but his songs i guess you could say just have no emotion behind them. (not sure how to put it) Its like he just flows with his speed and nothing more.

If anyone can help me try to put this any better please do .

I know exactly what you are saying. There is nothing memorable about his playing. Unlike Vai who has a lot of emotion and feel to his songs Cooley's playing is more like a scalar exercise. Same goes for Suicmez, Pat O Brien and half of the so called "Technical Death Metal" players. To me their playing is nothing more than showing off. They focuss on playing as many notes as they can or how fast they can sweep rather than writting an actual song. It's no different than listening to a computer. Perhaps I'd like Necrophagist a bit better if they had more emotion in their music. Would it really kill Muhummad to throw a clean guitar intro in? Players like Trey Azagthoth, Jeff Loomis, or even Chuck Schuldiner can show their technicality yet still remain emotional and write powerful songs. Trey even said "The best music comes from the heart. Not a scale or pattern. You have to feel the music."

Well I guess I would steal the powers from those dudes Psycroptic, because I can't get my playing to sound that clean, those Aussie bastards. :O And I like em more than Necrophagist so yeah.

Glad to see more people recognize Trey's talent. The best part about his playing is that it's not doctrined, he's totally self taught but doesn't sound like self taught players. He may take Van Halen and Schenker influence but his playing is unmistakable.

Rusty Cooley and/or Vai

I would use the skills to play in my own style btw.. but if you got Rusty and Vai skills you can play pretty much whatever you want (whatever I want anyway)

That is so true. Even if someone's almost strictly into death metal, it's a wise idea to try and learn from players like these.
