playing necrophagist
Just under 2 years off playing guitar now, i would consider my playing ability pretty average for the amount of time.
Ive been playing pretty much metallica, death, carcass, etc
Recently found necrophagist and altough a little more extreme then what i usually listen to i love them, i like listening to the tabs almost as much as the real songs so that i can actually hear all the riffs instead of a wall of noise.
basically just asking for any tips on how to start learning this stuff, right now ive nailed most of foul body autospy rytham at 75% speed almost the same for fermented offal discharge rytham, and ive just started trying to stabwound rytham, although im having a hell of time just remebering what comes next as each bar is a different riff.........! the solos of each of these songs seem years out of reach.
for all the pedal tone riffs in the necrophagist, which is pretty much all of their rythem guitar stuff, do you strictly downpick it?
what songs would you guys consider the easiest to play?
also with playing in generally, ive come to a stand still with my down picking speed for the last 3 months or so. what i normally do is just repeatadly play master of puppets and up the speed until i cant keep up, this normally takes about 5 or so play throughs, but i just havent been able to gain any more speed lately, im stuck at around 85% of normal speed....
thanks guys

Tips I can suggest would be to practice playing the riffs slow at first, focusing on technique, then gradually build tempo. I'd also suggest practising your alternate picking and getting your wrist technique nice and comfortable so your not straining to play.
Culinary Hyperversity is probably one of the easier songs to learn imo, it encompasses a bit of everything into different "sections" if you like... and the structure compared to the other songs isn't as hard to remeber.

thanks,
well ive just started the song, and im already stuck, i do know the basics of sweep picking but this one has already stumped me for fingerings. I put under what fingering i use, the next sweep after though is sweet.

this is how i would finger it:
-----------------------14-----------|
--------------10-14-10----14-------|
-----------11-----------------------|
--------11--------------------------|
-----12----------------------12-9--|
--14--------------------------------
4 3 2 2 1 4 1 4 4 3 1
i would use my little finger for this bit:
e-14-----
b-----14-
i would use a rolling technique with my little finger. so i would fret 14 on the high e with my little finger then i would roll that on to the string above and fret 14. it would make the transition to 12-9 easier.

Extreme unction is the easiest by far.

That's horrible. Play it like this:
Code:
|---------------9----14-9------|
|------------10---10-----------|
|---------11-------------------|
|------11----------------------|
|-9-12--------------------12-9-|
|------------------------------|
1 4 3 3 2 1 2 4 1 4 1

Wether it should or not is subjective. I would definitely not reccomend it. Downpicking at 240 is pushing it imo, alternate picking is the way to go for a large majority of Necrophagist riffs.
You should also go on youtube and search necrophagist, you'll come up with a lot of vids, most have a good view of Muhammed playing.

man most tabs of necrophagist ive seen on metaltabs all have sweeps that dont make sence at all.. dno if they have been changed/corected yet. but the 3 or 4 solos i learned.. i redid all the fingersettings cuz they didnt make sence at all. not saying the notes were wrong, just the fingersettings.
also, pick whatever is most comfortable to you, id probaly alternate pick about every riff of necrophagist, cuz its alot more accurate in keeping the right timing/tempo.

No problem! As K13m mentioned, it's always worth checking if the notes can be played at a different position on the fretboard.

It's mostly alternate picking I'd think!
I cartainly can't play 'Stabwound' downpicking. But then, My alternate picking leaves much to be desired so I'm not great at it that way either...

Christ! If you can then fair play to you but I'd say it's too fast for any normal person to do that.

i only asked about strict downpicking, since all i hear about is that master of puppets is played all through out with it, and so should any songs with 8th note riffs...and since mop is at 220, 240 for foul body, doesnt sound all the extreme.
anyway thanks for all the replies, ive dropped culinery hyperversrity and gone onto extreme unction which im finding alot easier. i just may post a recording of how im going soon

There is a difference between downpicking (mostly) thrash open notes at 170/180 and downpicking complex pedal tones with lots of string skipping at 220/240.

Wait. You can play the first riff of Foul Body Autopsy strictly in downstroke?
I don't want to sound like a dick but that's pretty much beyond human capability. If you REALLY can, your arm'd be so stiff that it'd probably sound like absolute bullshit.
Anyway, constant alternate picking is the way to go.Especially for Epitaph, where there's a lot of string skipping.

That's all very well, but Master of Puppets is at around 220bpm and, to me, is very easily achieved with all downstrokes.

yeah sure.
have you ever tried out chromatic sweeping?
it is exactly that and every time you finish up and down, you move up one fret.

I agree, I have been playing MOP for about 20 years now and the whole album can be played with all down picking. The same can be said for Ride The Lighting.
Listen to all 8 Bloodsoaked (death metal) songs here:

thought id post a little clip of how im coming along with extreme unction. i left out 2 riffs near the middle of the song which i havent learnt yet, and the repeated stuff at the very end.
Right now im near my max speed at 85% of normal speed, before my playing becomes even sloppier then now. Still having trouble linking riffs together and whatever, if i slow it down a can play it noticeably better .
and yes i know my guitars noisy.
dont rip me apart been playing for 1yr 8 months just figured out!

not a bad tone, what gear are you using?
sounds better than i can play it, but i never actually slowed it down and tried to learn it, not my style either, i do more in flames, dark tranquillity, and black dahlia murder type stuff.
