How would you play this?
I'm in the process of learning Extreme Unction by necrophagist. I was wondering about how to pick this riff:
A--------3-------3-------3--
C------2-------2-------2----
G----1-------1-------1------
D--0-------0-------0-------- etc. it carries on in a similar style
at the moment I find it easiest to alternate pick throughout (its a habit drummed into me by my guitar teacher years ago). Alt. picking, I can play this riff cleanly at about 200bpm (1/4 notes), the actual song is about 210bpm.
I will probably be able to achieve full speed with alt picking in the next few days (I've only been at this song about 4 hours now), but do you think it would be better technique to play it sweep-style?

Yes, I think sweep style picking will be easiest and fastest, or even an economy style picking where you can at least get 2 notes in a downstroke would make for ease.

C--------8-------8-------8--
G------7-------7-------7----
D--0-6-----0-6-----0-6------
pick the open D with an uppick, and sweep the fretted notes.

I did try that, but it makes the next bit of the riff quite a bit tricky to get to quickly, but not too bad...
G---3---4---
D-1---1-----
I'm toying with the idea of transposing the whole section, but I'll probably just keep practicing it as it is, I'm almost up to speed anyway. |

Man, I get real sweaty after I wack my dong. yeah definately not, just alternate pick it. Sweeping may seem logical, but it will be too choppy and just, 'meh'. I got it going pretty fast with alternate picking, i cant imagine you having to do it that fast. |

meh I have no trouble downpicking all the notes. If alternating picking that riff is easier for you then go ahead and do it no one is stopping you.

(or not its been a while since ive heard that song.) And this post has no relevance other than me agreeing, thats a decent way to play it. Id do 0h6 then the tiny two string sweep. Well, for ultimate speed. I cant remember this song, though I have the album, so yeah...I dont know how fast it should be played off by heart. |

alternate pick it, that way ul stay in the right timing.
i tryd every way i could find, but alternate did it for me
