Interesting Theory
I just read a book that said violence was a function of high self-esteem...
Discuss.
(The book = Baumiester's "On Evil" - it's an academic book but very well written and bordering on shocking at times. Well worth reading.)

it had a few reviews and i nearly ordered it....but thats enough to turn me off.
although i have quite a bit of reading to catch up on anyway..... i'd have NO time if ordered it, seeing as my satanic bible arrived today, and behold a pale horse and atheism, a case against god is nearly here...i should be tied up for quite a while.
so, since i wont be reading that book, are there any real stand out points you could share with us?? |

From a bullying point of view, i'd say violence brings self-esteem. High school bullies feel powerful and god-like once they've beaten up just about everyone they can. Just a walk down the hall strikes fear in the smaller students' eyes....this makes the bully feel awesome.

I'm 1 meter and 90 centimeters and Im a big boy overall so I really never had any problems, sometimes back in the day that I was small people called me alternative etc. in a negative way but now I don't hear any of that bullshit anymore.

really, violence is about power right? you beat some one up or hurt them to feel good, to make a stand, get it out of the system, feel good etc. to make the move you must have confidence: no one is going to go into a fight thinking oh my god theres no way i can even look this person in the eye. people have fights or start them or whatever because they have the confidence to do so, and go inot it thinking they will win. confidence is high self esteem.
even people who kill other people have this sick sense of power - cos they can control others destiny's as they please and at their will, and all it takes is that moment where you think/ know youw ill do it ( im guessing here!) and you do it. if it works i guess you get a rush of esteem, like you do when anything you want to make happen actually works.
so i guess it workis both ways - you get self esteem from causing violence, and violence can stem from high self esteem - perhaps too high.

the only fighting that bores me is everything not shown on t.v..
it seems to me that real life fighting looks weird and looks like
it would be hard work. but on t.v., it looks cool, and easy.
except for blade 2. man, was i disappointed with that movie.
those graphics sucked, and the story line copied a lot of cool movies like
aliens, and preditor.
