Me and my friends are starting a band (if we can ever get the fucking money together to get the PA) and we need a name.

I know people will throw all kinds of goofy ass names, but I hope some people can actually help out, from a musicians standpoint.

We are a melodic death metal band, with influences all over the charts, everything from Opeth and Novembers Doom (my favorites) to Tool.

We aren't a gore metal band, so all the gore names are out. We are a non religious band, so no satanic bullshit.

We want something that is deep, dark, depressed, and represents an intelligent melodic death metal band.

It is very difficult though, to come up with a name that isn't completely cliche, used by someone else, cheesy, ect, ect, ect....

I can write lyrics all day long. But for some reason, coming up with a band name that fits us is way harder than you would think.

As Transient says, why can't you come up with your own name? And what happens if you take a name suggested by someone here? That name isn't yours it's their idea they could want payment or they could copywrite it and claim ownership or something petty and arse(far fetched I know, but stupid crap happens).

None of those really show off that you're a melodic band (besides the last), but I guess you could just insert the word "melodic" in any of them. Either way, I don't think explaining the genre of your band in the name is necessary (or straight!).

I also think "Recluse" is a good name that may fit with what you want. Searching metal-archives shows no results of a band with that name (or my suggested) existing, either.

A name might you when you least expect it. I've heard many tales that way. And if your band changes over the years the name may change, too, so don't stress over it.

Use a favorite phrase from one of your lyrics for a title.

If you can't come up with a band name, then you have nothing, NOTHING to say. You might think that you do, or you'd like to have something to say, but you don't. It might be simply because you'd like to make music, just music, with no underlying theme. In that case you can just name it anything and you don't have to think about it. Latin names are popular, they make you sound oh so smart and gloomu. Inteligent and dark? Okay. Is it dark, inteligent and romantic, or dark, inteligent and sardonic, hateful, or what?
