You Tube Bedroom Shredders
I am sick of all the guitar players on youtube. Why do I want to see you play mindless shredding in one key, in no particular time signature?
Don't get me wrong, I like shredding myself, I just feel it's something to do alone, like masturbation. I'm not one of those people who bash shredders through jealousy or argue that shredding isn't music and has no soul, I just can not fucking stand the thousands of 17 year old Malmsteen wannabe's clogging up my search results when I type in "guitar solo".
It's ALWAYS the same some young lad ALWAYS with no t-shirt on for some reason sits right up to the camera and just plays a mindless combination of the following; three string alternate picking up and down the neck, sweeping (usually chromatic or diminished because melody is for wimps) and the one that really fucking annoys me.... TAPPING.

This is shredding, but it has purpose. He has composed this piece, it has structure. It's not exactly my cup of tea, but this doesn't piss me off.

This is exactly the kind of thing I hate seeing.
To clarify, it's not that I am not against what they're playing, I'm against them making videos of it because they think I would want to see it.
And I may have come across as a dickhead in this post but in real life I'm the most humble person. If I didn't vent my dickeheadedness somewhere I WOULD kill someone.

the first video is fucking gay. I like the 2nd guys playing. His sweep technique is fucking nice. I still gotta work on my sweeps for solos.

I like watching the shred videos. What bug me the most is when there's guys going crazy with sweeping, but they are really bad at it.

I think shredding is ok, if you don't overdo it. Like the guys that have the shittiest tone ever and play so fast that they can't even bend a string nice. I say like Richie Sambora said, '' I like my solos to be a piece of music, not just a showoff ''. That gives you something to think about.

I don't really like the majority of bedroom shredders much either. Now when a drum track is behind it or it's the full song or a lesson I can dig that. But when see guys grab their guitar and sweep their asses off I just say "Ok. But what else can you do?"
I dunno ever since i've learned how to sweep and I hear guitar players (although very tallented) and that's all they do is just sweep. It's fucking boring. Throw a few scale runs or perhaps some more to the solo. I can sweep like Necrophagist now but I rarley use it in my solos. I just find sweeping is overratted.

haha i know exactly what you mean man. I've posted about this quite a few times. Sure i'm that guy with no shirt in his room "shredding" but i definately don't fucking video tape it.
I was thinking about it earlier just how much i hate solos that sound like they attempted to cram as many notes in a 30 second period as possible. But thats me.

its<the sweeping,tapping,guitar astrophysics> one of those things that works better as a climax to a set of music, not necessarily each song.
being mostly a drummer who knows a very limited amount of guitar most of what the kid was doing in the second vid was totally lost on me. bands that do that every song, very few of them hold my interest, mostly none of them cant avoid circling the same ideas.
its like listening to rap music where the guy repeats the same rhymes as a climax to each song on the album. or he rhymes a in complex meter that doesnt logically follow the message of the song, or make much sense at all.
the anti-shred vibe is not born out of jealousy,all that stuff is lost on most people anyway. if drummers shredded nearly as much what we would have is dream theatre or a descending series of virgil donati/daveweckl clones. metal will fall straight into musak/elevator/80s fusion rock. it becomes music for musicians.
so you guitarplayers have a great responsibilty composing music, its extremely hard not to repeat the same songs, same rhythms,same chops over and over again. MOST shredder type are the worst offenders.

I can definately relate to this. I find it sometimes very hard not to reproduce the samet hing i've done again and again. And alot of times its evident in my solos (to me) although now and again i come up with interesting ways of doing different things.
