I went to the north of the island yesterday to go round a kart track/tourist bus route to try to gain confidence at cornering fast. It feels weird after a certain point on the tyre. The bike suddenly leans over much more and turns sharper. This is what scares me.
Anyway, now the wear line on my tyre looks much more hxc.

I got 125 out of my bike in France. I don't think there was much more left in it, maybe another 5mph.

I'll probably do the TT one day. My dad's been a few times either in the 70s or 80s... or both.
"One of the most notorious features of the TT fortnight is "Mad Sunday", a tradition that sees a large section of the track - from the Ramsey Hairpin to Creg-ny-Baa - made one-way to the public for one day. Fans get to be racers for a day."
I bet it is mad.

I had some new tyres fitted last Friday a few hours before I went to England to go to the Donington MotoGP. I'll post some pictures of everything later for the few that care 'cos at the moment is the repeat of the Assen qualifying.

Welding up the rear monoshock mount, you can see the dogbone is still not in place in that pic. If you look closely
Some other stuff, like making the exhaust can fit and making some spacers for the front brake calipers. These bikes never came with UPSD's or 6 pot calipers.. And they sure as hell weren't sold with an 1100r engine
It started for the first time last week and it's way different then the stock 900 engine, from 95 to 130/140 bhp isn't too shabby either!

The swingarm looks fucking awesome. I think it would look good with black wheels as well. I bet it's gonna turn real sharp with the height of the back end. Are you going to make a custom hanger for the can? What bike are the forks from?

Yep, I'm going to make something out of aluminium and maybe have it a bit more up-swept. The forks are from an Yamaha FZR1000. Calipers are from a Hayabusa. Rear end is Harris, wheels are Marchesini and the rearsets are from a Fireblade, they're not on the pic though.

I've driven it as well but I'de save up for a speed triple!
The street triple has great handling though, even though they had to 'economise' the suspension it still handles like a dream. And still plenty fast, ofcourse.
I've driven the old speed triple (mid 90's model) and the new one, awesome bikes with a very distinctive sound. The speed four didn't do it for me..

I've read and heard how good the bike is to ride. A slightly watered down Daytona. Probably will be more enjoyable than the Hypermotard I rode last month, that thing needs plenty of effort on the small and tight roads over here.
I can't believe how cheap the triple is over here. The dealer is managing to sell it for £4700. I think I'm more likely to end with a 4cyl, but I need to get some ideas.
How is yours coming along??

So I should be back in the states very soon and I'm signing up for the course to get my license. Now I just need to find a bike. For now I'm looking for a 600cc sport bike from as early as 2000.. haven't really settled on anything yet though. Leaning towards a CBR 600 or maybe a SV650 SF w/ ABS. Not really sure.
Any pics of that new bike Hidrio? What kind is it?

I'm somewhere in the Atlantic heading back to Norfolk, VA. Can't wait to get there either! I've been teasing myself constantly by browsing craigs list and cycle trader to see what bikes are on sale in my area..
First I need to get the endorsement on my license, then I can worry about what bike I want to buy.

how does VA do it, you just get the endoresment and thats it? in maine we have to do it like a normal drivers liscences, get your permit first (unlike a car though you dont have to log x amoung of hours) then you send for your road test to get the endorsement

heres my '72, and yea shes got an oil leak problem but it seems to be coming from the chaincase so a new gasket should fix that, ordered it last week and hasnt come in yet.
i wanna turn her into an olschool bobber, already took off the front fender/speedo/tach and blinkers. i wanna get new pipes for it, id love to get an old springer fork, older style 'spring seat' (not sure the name thats what i call it) white wall tires, 60 spoke wheels
side view, sportsters pre 73 or 74 had shifters on the right, also updated SS carb
rear view
other side with an old 30cal ammo can for a saddle bag i have a matching one for the other side, but the latch broke so i need to reweld it
front view
iron head engine
points cover

Nice looking bike. Personally I'm more into sport bikes, but have started to appreciate cruisers more as of late.
In VA you can take a written exam and get a learners permit which will allow you to ride your bike to a location to take the riding (and a class) test. After you complete that MSF course, you take your completion certificate to the DMV and get an endorsement on your license. There are also a couple community colleges that have courses that proved 125-500cc bikes you can use for a riding portion along with a class room portion to get your endorsement without having a learners permit.
Right now I'm leaning towards an 07 (or 08, 09) Suzuki SV650SF w/ ABS. Brand new they are from $7,399-$7,999. Suzuki is offering some kind of cash back deal on 08 and older models too. Still not sure though..I have some time left to make up my mind.

I can't believe it's that easy to get your licence over there.. we have a theoretical test, a bunch of lessons an a practical test where someone examines your driving in difficult situations.
The SV's are nice and smooth bikes, perfect for beginners. I wouldn't spend that much on a new one though, instead of that I'de go for a cheaper (but faster) TL1000S. Same V-twin souplesse but more grunt. It kind of depends on your size, the TL1000S and TL1000R are real men's bikes. If you're small, like under 6'3 it's more difficult to control these bikes..
If you're willing to spend a lot of cash on a new bike there's loads more options. But if you want a Suzi Twin, the TL series is the way to go imho.

That kinda reminds me of easy rider! Cool bike, even though I'm not into choppers and twins that don't corner at all
Kinda cool you guys have a special license plate for classics, over here everything before 1974 has a special plate. My Honda '69 Z50A monkey has one but my '79 CBX 1000 has a regular plate. Which is kinda lame, I mean, the CBX is more of a classic...

hah nice, actually my naighbor said it best, i brought it home and he goes "damn man thats a hells angels bike right there"
but yea the antique plates are cool, if you have a car pre 1929 you get 'historical' plates, and ive seen 'hot rod' plates which i think can only be cars pre 1949

Yea, it's not too difficult to get a license. The process is a little more demanding if you are younger, but I'm turning 27 in about two months.
I'm trying to find one of the 07 and later SVs with ABS that is used so I don't have to spend that much. Plus, if I lay it down (being my first bike and all) I won't be quite as pissed as I would be if I bought a brand new bike. Thanks for the recommendation on the other bike, however I don't really think I need to worry too much about getting a faster bike. Once I'm more comfortable riding then I'll probably start looking at something with a little more grunt. Also, I'm 5'9" so I'm looking for something with relatively low seat height. The 09 SV is at 30.5" or 30.9" stock. I'm having a bit of trouble finding used ones on sale in my area though.

Any pics of that new bike Hidrio? What kind is it?

Whoa, forgot about this thread. I think the question is what was it!
2003 ZX6R
Before 1
Before 2
After knobhead
Creased frame
R.I.P. 15th September 2008. I only had her 7 months. Awesome 636cc engine. That thing pulled harder from 7k than any other middleweight in it's time and probably some of them these days.
You might remember I had a '99 SV. It was perfect for a first bike I think but where I live is only 45 square miles. The SV has much more usable power than a 4 cylinder like a CBR but it depends how and where you'd use it. I'd imagine the SV-S with the half fairing would be more comfortable than a supersport rep like the CBRs/GSXRs. My naked SV didn't have much wind protection and was a bit uncomfortable at anything over 75mph and is more relaxed than the supersports. When coming back from Le Mans we were doing 90-100mph for 2.5 hours and I was comfy (5ft9). Stuck in traffic though and you can feel the extra weight on your wrists eventually. It's all about compromises really. Anyway, I've just had a call that the garage has sorted my current bike... gotta run.

Ah you're going for a quite new model then. The SV's are good bikes. The Suzi TLR and Honda VTR SP1 (RC51) would be alternatives close to your price range but if you're a starter they would be quite a handfull
I'm 6'4 myself and had no trouble with a TL1000R but they're heavy bikes with loads of torque. You need to be big to drive it, imho. I now drive an even more heavy CBX 1000 6 cylinder, which is more of a classic superbike. Fastest production bike in the 80's but it has a tiny front fork and compared to today's sportbikes it has absolutely horrible handling.
I did some testdriving in the last two months, I took a ride on a Honda CB1300 and a '09 Yamaha R1. The CB1300 was just plain boring, a big naked bike like my CBX but with no soul. More of a tourer with a lot of torque, it didn't make an impression.
The R1 did, it scared the hell out of me. It's just too easy to go fast on that bike, there is no way I could take it out every weekend without having my licence revoked. It's not only the acceleration, it's the braking and handling as well. Everything is so good, it's just insane. After a few days on this bike I'de probably think that I'm Rossi and wipe myself out with a nasty tankslapper.
Hidrio, what happend to the 636? Nothing frontal juding by the front forks? No injuries?

Yea I'm not looking for anything that will be way too fast for a new rider. I figure the SV will be a decent balance of not too fast, but not slow enough where I'll be tired of it in no time flat. My Dad seems sold on me buying a BMW F800S. It's a great looking bike and all but they are a little expensive. The 07 model he last sent me info on is $8,000 or best offer. Depending on the year, I could buy a brand new SV for less.

A guy in a Volvo XC90 pulled across my side of the road without looking and I hit the back left wheel at about 30mph. Luckily I slammed on the front brake instantly locking the front wheel and bike started to go down to the left just before it hit the car so I slid past the car. Only slightly grazed my back where my jacket had lifted up and my left hand was bruised for about 3-4 days.
I tested a 2008 GSXR 750 for a friend 4 days later which he now owns. Then I bought myself a 2005 KTM Superduke another 4 days later with the insurance money from the crash.

I'm enrolled in the MSF Basic Rider Course at the end of May. It's 3 days...classroom time/test, then two days of riding training. After completing it, I'll be able to get my full license..then it's time for some real bike shopping...no more of the window shopping.

Hubby put new brakes on the Harley and went for a ride 2 days ago and yesterday we went out to Bob's on it. It was almost 90 and a bit warm in long sleeves, jeans, boots, and a helmet, but it was nice riding. Thank goodness for my helmet! It sounded like a humming bird hit it it made such a loud crack when a bug hit. He had his shorty helmet on the day before and got stung on the neck.
There's a Like new, bright red, old, old Honda sitting for sale along the road between here and Bob's. It's pretty. I don't have any idea the size.

Today was day two of the riding course. Yesterday was all classroom, today was all riding. I had a shitload of fun and was doing pretty well. Hardest stuff was the low speed maneuvering. Stalled out a few times, but other than that I did just fine all day...until our last exercise.
We did emergency stops from somewhere in second gear (250 Honda Rebel) with downshifting and both brakes. I did a few runs then tried to improve but locked up the front tire..next part is where it got bad. For some reason I turned the handle bars..I guess it was just a reflex caused by what was happening. Next thing I knew, I had done my first high-side and was laying on the ground with the bike laying on my leg!
Luckily I had a full helmet on, jacket with padding and armor, steel toed over the ankle boots and sturdy pants on. Got up just fine, wrist hurts a little bit, but was able to get up and jump back on and do some more runs once we made sure the bike was still good to go. The handle bars got a little misaligned. Needless to say, I was a bit more light on the front brake after that!

Good thing you were well padded and had that helmet on. You'll get the hang of it. Better off road than on with traffic.

Purdy. Congrats! I just learned something. When I told my hubby that your bike was blue he said that's Yamaha's race color. Each bike company has their own color.
I hope you got a helmet, too? I've noticed a lot more up here are wearing them now.
You're officially scooter scum now.

Scooter scum is the affectionate term bikers use for each other.
Sounds like you're all set. Something you might want to add to that is a small bike repair kit you can keep right on your bike just incase. They do come in handy at times.
The ole man went for what started out as a short ride yesterday. It turned out to be a hundred mile ride and he got a little sunburnt even though it was late afternoon. He said he felt much better when he got home. 2 wheeled therapy.

Ahh, haven't heard that one.
Well, I got my bike registered today..have a plate on there now that is legit, am insured, and went riding twice today! Still haven't gone all that fast, haven't hit 40 mph yet. Having a blast though. Seems I'm squeezing the grips a bit hard, I have to remind myself to loosen up every so often when my hands start to ache a little.

Damn that Super Duke looks badass! I used to only like full fairing sport bikes but slowly I've grown to love naked bikes...not so much Harleys or cruisers, but naked sport bikes.
That's a long ass ride! Longest I've gone so far is about 1.5 hours or so...a bit under 2 straight hours I think.
Fastest I've gone is about 70mph. The roads here in VA have a fairly low speed limit, which kinda sucks.. Still I don't need to go too crazy as a beginner anyway. Went to an unsanctioned car show/meet tonight and met a few bikers in the area.. No FZ's but I did run into one guy on an FZ6 earlier in the day. Gave him a quick double honk since I couldn't get up next to or passed him because of the car in front of me. heh
Yea, people suck on the roads. I have already encountered a few situations where someone didn't know I was there...or just didn't care. Either way, I had to move or lay on the horn. Sad thing is that I don't really want to mess with these people too much because you never know which crazy ass is the one that will use their vehicle to screw with you back.

Hidrio, do you have any problems keeping your bike running changing altitudes? I remember my biology teacher talking about when he was excessive heights the bike would die and he finally figured out he had to make adjustments to compensate for the thinner air.
Gotta watch for the motorists, but a year I went on the BAD Run with my husband a guy died because a bee got in his shirt and he ended up going through a field where he hit a bump and went flying. His wife and one of his kids were on bikes behind him and saw the whole ordeal. We were way ahead so we didn't find out about it til later on. He was in a coma a couple days and died from his injuries. And he was an old pro. Sometimes fluke things happen.

Many magazines etc. have said the Superduke was the original 'naked sportsbike'. Obviously there were nakeds before then but they were always put in the shade by their fully faired cousins. It is definitely the best bike I have ridden. It's comfortable but without compromising control, the brakes are still good compared to the latest bikes and the suspension and frame work amazingly together. I've gone down one tooth on the front sprocket as well for extra mad acceleration.
When we were away we were racking up 8-9 hours each day on the bikes. One of the last days I'm sure it was almost 10 hours. That was most of Switzerland and the whole of France. Needless to say we were fucked by the end of it. It's not the ass that goes, it's the legs and shoulders.
Your bike should be good for 135mph easily. Have you found the nerves to chase the redline yet? I've had 140 out of mine with luggage on and there wasn't much left.
I probably have near misses once every 3 weeks. There's always someone out there trying to get you. I still haven't forgotten how my previous bike came to an end.
As for altitude... I think most fuel injected bikes these days adjust themselves. I know mine certainly does. Every time I start mine up it adjusts itself to the altitude/ambient temperature etc.

Hah, I didn't ever think about the Superduke as a naked sportsbike but I guess it makes sense.
Ever tried holding on to a 80's naked bike at 200 kmh? It's a different feeling... like a flag trying to hold on to it's pole New bikes are so damn comfortable, I tried out one of the later fireblade models (2004 I think) and it was just too damn easy to go fast.
Remember that the sportsbikes now are all derived from their unfaired forefathers that used to be the 'original' superbikes. Like the Kawa Z1000, Honda CBX 1000, Suzi GS1000, you name 'em.
Cool 'on the road' pics by the way! Switzerland has some killer curves!!

Yeah, the guy I was talking about was back in the 1970's so I'm sure with all the travel people do on them now it's been adjusted. I do know that even in our Chevy Blazer the O2 sensor kicks on the idiot light during accelerations especially in mountain areas even though there's nothing physically wrong with the truck.

That's true about the old bikes. When my dad got his GS550 it was the only one over here. Can't remember what year it was (1979 maybe) but I remember him saying he had the cover of 'Bat Out of Hell' painted on the tank. Didn't last very long though, he swerved to miss a granny walking out from in front of a bus and he broke his jaw. And the tank.
The Superduke certainly isn't the fastest naked out there but it's quicker in the real world than a lot of the track-biased superbikes. The suspension controls the weight perfectly but it stays composed even on the rough roads over here where I see a lot of people backing off.
My bike is the same in a way, there's a light that flashes different codes to let you know what's wrong with it. Most of the time it's just silly things. Haven't found out myself luckily.

I've gone up to the redline for a gear or two a few times but typically shift before I get up that high. Fastest I've noticed myself going (don't usually even look at the speedo when accelerating quickly) was 80something. On a highway. I'm not sure how fast it goes to 60mph but I just read a great review of a 2004 model (mine is '07) and that did it in 3.4 seconds. I doubt it's any slower than that. Fast enough either way! I'm still loving it...in the 2 weeks I've had it, I've put on just over 400 miles. Locked up a wheel twice..once worse than the other, but both ended well for me and the bike luckily! Hopefully I learned my lesson during that course when I high sided!

I've taken some pics of the CBX as well, it was a sunny weekend so I decided to take her out for a spin I am still amazed by the engine, it just has so much torque and the sound kills infants.
I was used to a '80's 900 bike, the cb900f but this is pretty different. It can scare the crap out of you. Maybe that's due to the fact it has an insane engine and real poor suspension and skinny tires. But it sure is a thrill to ride

I meant to get frame sliders ages ago but I got a bloody good set of tyres instead. They can save your wallet though.
I don't think I've ever heard a 6cyl before. Do they whistle like a triple?

Might try to get some nicer ones (not that I think the ones I have now are bad..) once I need to get some new rubbers.

Well, the inevitable has happened I guess. Was going around a corner I've been through many times in the last two months and gave it too much throttle while leaned over quite a bit and crossing a patch of these red bricks used for a cross walk. Next thing I knew, I lost traction and the bike had tossed me. Not even sure exactly how it looked because it was so fast..next thing I knew, I was rolling down this road wondering when I'd finally come to a stop.
Luckily I had all my gear on. Still have a little road rash where my jacked came up a little on my lower back, was wearing dickies pants so there is still some on my legs..particularly my left leg which I guess is the side I first landed on. My leg's a bit swollen and the knee hurts. Left wrist is also in a little bit of pain when I try to use it to do anything that requires much effort like putting my hands down to push myself when I am standing up.
Now for the bad part.. The bike wound up laying on it's right side with the throttle wide open! I think the engine may have seized due to revving so hard for about 10 seconds or so and not having enough oil throughout the engine. It won't start now..though the problem seems to be electrical now. It started twice but shut off after giving it a little throttle.
The frame sliders saved the day other than that..
Now when I go to start the bike, it does it's diagnostic check when I turn the key to the on position..then when I hit the ignition, it instantly shuts off and goes back into the diagnostic check like I just turned the key..

At least you're okay. If you haven't already get a manual on the bike and talk to some mechanics about the trouble. Most are very helpful even if you plan to do the work yourself.

Yup, they are.
The bike can be fixed mate. Just be happy you're okay, sounds like you got off lucky enough!
If it's seized it wouldn't start up again at all. If an engine is seized it's usually a valve that broke off and wrecked the piston/cylinder wall. Valves don't break that easy so I reckon it's not that.
Back to basics, you need a spark and fuel to run a bike. When you rev it, it stopped? Maybe the fuel system is messed up or the ignition is off, no damage to the engine casing/alternator and such?
This is what a 6-banger sounds like:
